What is a Parish Map? "A Parish Map is a visual representation of the things that local people value and ant to preserve. Parish Maps come in all shapes and sizes and have been produced as quilts, posters, videos, sculptures, collage postcards and even tea towels. The skill and interest of local people will determine the form that the Parish Map will take." Such is the definition of a Parish Map according to the charity "Common Ground", who initiated the concept back in 1985. Hundreds of maps have been created nationally under this scheme. Leicester Rural Community Council picked up the idea as "A Local Agenda 21" initiative to celebrate the new millennium. Images of Quorn 2000 is the interpretation by six Quorn embroideries who responded to the Parish Council Chairman's plea for villagers to produce a Parish Map for Quorn. Rosemary Boaler made the initial response and gathered together five other embroiderers. This team of Rosemary (team leader) Babe Chadwick, Lynn Holdsworth, Vyvian Hopper, Kate Hutchinson and Mollie Jones have worked to produce Images of Quorn. The team met every fortnight to discuss the work, make suggestions and give information to each other. The finished item is a tribute to the six embroiderers and shows many sights around the village. Images of Quorn is not a map in the true sense, but as the title says is a collection of notable features of the village.

Crazy Quiltsapparently all the rage in the "90's" a hundered years ago are once again a very popular venue of artistic expression amongst quilters today. These lavish beauties appeared on the world scene amidst the Victorian Era, and provided a showcase for women to display their needlework talents. Combining quilt piecing in a random fashion, with beautiful embroidery, these "quilts" became decorative pieces in a householdin sharp contrast to the other more utilitarian and practical quilts which were commonly made outside of this "craze." Crazy quilting seems to have been a relatively short-lived trend of the 19th Century, perhaps owing to their being considered rather a frivolous use of time and textiles. We have some beautiful examples of Crazy Quilts of the past from which we can draw inspiration for our own modern masterpiecessome of these are even here in cyberspace. There are still others documented in books. Some of what I've found will be presented here, and hopefully this page will be a good starting point in your own research on CQ's.
