Embroidery
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Embroidery is an ancient textile A textile is any kind of woven, knitted, or tufted cloth, or a non-woven fabric (a cloth made of fibers that have been bonded into a fabric, e.g. felt). Textile also refers to the yarns, threads and wools that can be spun, woven, tufted, tied and otherwise used to manufacture cloth. The production of textiles is an ancient art, whose speed and scale of production has been altered almost beyond recognition by mass-production and the introduction of modern manufacturing techniques. An ancient Roman weaver would have no problem recognizing a plain weave, twill, or satin.

Artists use small (or sometimes much larger) pieces of canvas as a base for their works of art. This canvas is stretched across a wooden frame called a stretcher, and is coated with gesso before it is to be used (although some modern artists, such as Francis Bacon and Helen Frankenthaler sometimes paint onto the bare, unprimed canvas).

Carol Shinn's photo-realist embroidery
Jessica Hemmings Carol Shinn's embroideries are a study in the complex and minute details it is possible to render in thread. Shinn explains that her attraction to images of rusted cars and abandoned buildings depicted in her embroideries is based on the 'visual complexity' they present rather than any intentional narrative development. Frequently, she collages two partial images together in a desire to convey broader visual statements than a single scene can depict. As she explains, 'I have thought of myself primarily as a recorder of what I see, and by the act of recording I hope to get viewers to see things that they might otherwise ignore. I hope to draw attention to how differently we can see things - on one hand the close observation of the physicality of the things and on the other, the short-hand mode of seeing, just noticing things well enough to navigate the world while thinking about other things.' The contrasts found in these embroideries thrive on inherent juxtapositions: speed versus stasis, matt versus shine, the organic versus the mechanical. Often, a tension between the familiar and unfamiliar is apparent in the combination of image and content. Colour and form repeat, such as the insignia on the bonnet of a car echoed in an architectural alcove. The dialogue that ensues between these elements, the solid and the superficial, the hollow and the substantial, the nostalgic and the uncanny, is first and foremost a visual one. Nonetheless it is tempting, as a viewer, to look for narratives based on sequential cause and effect details embedded in these works. To succumb to this temptation with these particular works is a frustrating endeavour. The artist explains that the works are first determined by visual rather than narrative associations.

Stumpwork can be found as early as the seventeenth century. Early designs depicted stories from the bible or showing the English Stuart Court. Depictions of people, castles, flowers, animals, insects and fruit were always popular. Once the young girls of the house had mastered their stitch sampler, then Stumpwork would be one of their next tasks. Girls as young as 11 years would start their Stumpwork designs.
These traditional Stumpwork photos to the left are from Sulgrave Manor in England. They are not reproductions but the original art form. Thank you to Leon Conrad for allowing me to have these photos in my website. © Leon Conrad 2002 http://www.lcdesigns.org These photos will be more clear to view at night without background light. Small cabinets with draws (caskets) were covered in this raised hand embroidery. Mirrors would be given padded frames with these designs. Wall pictures, book covers and sachets were also popular.
This traditional design has many of the elements used in early designs. The woman's clothing, blue flower petals

"EMBROIDERY" BOOKS (not counted-thread) The Art of Elizabethan Embroidery by Jane Zimmerman is a slim book about the type of embroidery that was typical of Elizabethan England. About half the book consists of historical information, while the rest of the book consists of stitch diagrams. The book has a few black-and-white pictures of historical examples (the photo reproduction is not great quality but still interesting) and clear, black-and-white drawings of stitches. This is NOT a project book as it does not include designs to stitch. It is a welcome addition to the body of work on this subject.
The Art of Elizabethan Embroidery (1999, 31 pages, wirebound softcover)
The Art of Annemieke Mein: Wildlife Artist in Textiles is a book devoted to the wonderful creatures of Dutch-born Australian Annemieke Mein. She works in a variety of media (paint on fabric, machine embroidery, hand embroidery, fabric sculpture, beading, etc.) to create large scale and very realistic designs of the flora and fauna of Australia. This is not a project book but an inspiration book. Ms. Mein's work is exhibited and collected as fine art, and deservedly so. I have so many favorites from this book, but her frogs and birds are particularly well executed. Please note that we now have this book in a new paperback edition.

Are you looking for something new? Is there a gift you'd like to stitch, but haven't much time? Are you a little bored with the usual needlepoint stitches? Step into the world of Brazilian-Style Embroidery and stitch your way into what may become an obsession. Once encountered, this wonderful world will be visited again and again! Brazilian Embroidery was developed in Brazil in 1960 by Mrs. Elisa Hirsch Maia (known as Madam Maia). As this lovely lady embroidered her household items and clothing, she became dissatisfied with the available flosses and colors. In experimenting with dyeing the native cellulose, Madam Maia developed a new thread; and a new world of stitchery, which became known as Brazilian Embroidery, was created.
