Embroidery The art of ornamenting textiles with figured patterns by means of a needle and thread of wool, silk, linen or metal. In the ancient civilizations essential needlework and decorative stitchery devel- oped together, one evolving from the other. Garments needed mending and patching, and from this came ornamental stitching and more complex designs. Needlework was an early art form carried out by all classes of the community. Examples have come from Egyptian tombs and there are references in Hebrew literature, from Indian writings and, later, from the classical world of Homer, Ovid and Virgil. In the thirteenth and fourteenth cen- turies, English embroidery, opus anglicanurn, was the finest in Europe. The quality of the stitchery was so fine that the work was highly sought-after. Figure scenes and pictures of animals, birds and flowers were naturalistic and well-drawn. Silver thread and seed pearls were intro- duced into the embroideries and appliqu6 work was widely used. In the fourteenth century velvet grounds were favoured. EMBROIDERY TERMS AND STITCHE Anglo-Saxon work - an early embroidery where the design is outlined by stitches and filled in with silk couching.

30. History Of Embroidery, Needlework, Counted Cross Stitch
of thread could be used to transform plain canvas into the The embroidery patternswere now made from copperplate prints and then hand painted.
http://www.classiccrossstitch.com/history.html
History T he word Embroidery comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for "edge", but the technique itself was being used long before that. The term was first applied to decoratively stitched borders on medieval church vestments. But over time it came to cover all stitched decoration on any textile fabric.
The first textiles were probably made from intertwined stems and grasses, until a way of twisting short fibres and animal hairs into continuous strands evolved about 10,000 BC.
Fragments of cloth dating from between 5,000 BC and 500 AD have been excavated from tombs and monuments in South America, Egypt and China, and these show crude examples of darning, half cross stitch and satin stitch. Many of the fragments are made of linen; the regular warp and weft of this fabric, one of the oldest of all woven materials, provided the basis for the development of counted thread stitches.
The earliest known Embroidery examples are from 3000 B.C They are hand work over the woven threads on clothing.
The earliest example of a complete cross stitch is a design worked in upright crosses on linen, and the piece was discovered in a Coptic tomb in Upper Egypt, where it was preserved by the dry desert climate dating from about 500AD in Upper Egypt. Very few pieces of decorated fabric have survived from ancient civilisations, but this does not mean that decorative stitching was rarely used. Natural fibres are perishable and do not survive as well as most metal and ceramic objects excavated from archaeological sites.

In some designs like the 3764 and 3796 the rose flower is raised to provide it a unique look. The designs and colors used are as per the predictions for various seasons for e.g. darker colors are used for fall/winter whereas pastels are used for the spring/summer. Collection of Stitches for Hand Embroidery
I hope you find this needlework dictionary useful and with it able to improve your embroidery skills. To assist those who are new to the craft of embroidery I have categorised each stitch as to its degree of difficulty. A single pair of scissors indicates that the stitch is easy to work and you should not hesitate to try it. If you see two scissors, the stitch requires more skill. Three scissors indicate that the stitch needs skill and practice. I have also provided a cross index as many stitches are known by different names and a bibliography . For further links and resources online see my links pages and for news about updates to this site and more resources online see my weblog In a Minute ago...
    A TIP FOR LEFT HANDERS:
If you normally have problems following embroidery illustrations the computer can help you. Copy and save the image. In a graphics program flip the image horizontally so that you have a mirror image. Work from this and you will find it makes sense and feels right! If you make regular use of the information on this site you may wish to participate in a project which I am currently running.

... Home General information: Embroidery Think of the word "embroidery" what comes to mind? Crewel, needlepoint, smocking, Harhanger? The list could go on and on ... Embroidery is defined as the embellishment of fabric with needlework. In the realm of needlework, there are many types of hand stitching and literally hundreds of different stitches. Though some types of embroidery may seem intimidating at first, keep in mind most intricate stitches are combinations and variations of a few basic ones. Then, simply changing the fabric and application of a stitch a new technique, a different look. With so many different techniques to express your creativity using embroidery why not take some time to expand your horizons by learning a new stitch or technique? Begin a sampler of new stitches. As you perfect them, embellish a blouse or home decor project. If you're adventurous, try some pulled thread or cut work. Remember those basic stitches go a long way! Ribbon Embroidery is another very old art form. Simple in technique, it utilizes a needle to take a narrow ribbon through fabric creating many stitches, including some familiar embroidery stitches. While not typically as exact in the placement of the stitches as other forms of needlework, ribbon embroidery can be used to embellish cross-stitch, quilting, plastic canvas and needlepoint designs.
