Calls in the Wild
Midday sun scorches the plains of northern Namibia, and a female elephant just coming into estrus is making a racket. With a rumble loud enough to rival a jackhammer, she broadcasts her availability for mating. But gusty winds and turbulence created by heat shimmering through the atmosphere tend to break up the sound waves she generates, so her signal carries little more than half a mile. The odds are slim that a mature male in his own period of reproductive readiness will be close enough to hear her call.
Hours pass. Dusk settles over the flat sand veld. Winds calm, and air near the ground becomes cooler than the warm air above it, effectively creating a channel for sound. Now the low-frequency end of the eager female's cries can carry six miles (10 kilometers) in all directions, reaching the ears of elephants spread over a range of more than 110 square miles (280 square kilometers). The chance that a tall, strong mate will come swaggering her way is now a pretty sure thing.
Garstang became curious about whether elephants waste energy bellowing against the wind, or whether they take advantage of daily atmospheric changes that can boost bass tones like the woofers in stereo speakers. To find answers, he assembled a team of researchers and headed to Etosha National Park in Namibia, home to a healthy and growing elephant population. Hills and forests aren't part of Etosha's savanna habitat, so Garstang knew that weather, rather than terrain, would be the most significant environmental factor affecting the elephants' lowest pitched communications.

102. Elephant Adoptions
elephants are the world s largest land mammals. In fact, if it were not for humans, elephants would probably rate among the most successful species on Earth.
http://www.adoption.co.uk/elephant/
Elephants are the world's largest land mammals. Their noses, gestation period (nearly two years), front teeth, and maybe even their memory, are the longest in the animal kingdom. They, along with their extinct relatives, have lived everywhere, except Australia and Antarctica, from sea level to heights of more than 3600m, in habitats ranging from deserts to rain forests to glaciers. In fact, if it were not for humans, elephants would probably rate among the most successful species on Earth.
Once forming an almost continuous series of populations from Africa to China, they are now made up of just two main groups, African and Asian Elephants, which are now seperated by several thousand miles. Loss of habitat and the ivory trade are the two biggest factors in the decline in elephant population. During the 1980's over half of Africa's elephants had been killed and the elephant population was reduced by 700,000. Regarding habitat, the pattern is a familiar one as traditional elephant habitat is carved up for agricultural use and the elephants confined to ever shrinking areas. Help to protect this endearing creature by adopting an Elephant today.

Wild Elephant Report
The wild bull made several appearances during the season 00/01, presumably born of the small herd in the Eastern end of Royal Chitwan National Park, generally turning up late at night at the elephant camps. Although looking healthy and showing more awareness of his surroundings than in previous seasons he still is not old enough to attract a natural herd - our domestic females also remain un-impressed. There was no repeat performance of the abduction of the government elephant although his growing confidence around humans and domestic elephants is proving interesting. The best guest sighting of him came in late March, I went up to help look after Tented Camp for a day or two, I had been there for less than ten minutes when this handsome beast turned up. A quick look at him through the binoculars ensured he wasn't one of our boys out for a walk! The elephant camp boys recognise him, as, presumably, do our females - none seemed over joyed to smell him in the area and he seems to be gaining in confidence with every visit. It was a pleasure, however, for me to see him in broad daylight and for so long - long enough to see that he's fat, healthy and has no obvious wounds.

WILD LANDS Human habitation is fast closing in on the boundaries of many National Parks and Sanctuaries in India . Many crucial animal migration routes outside park borders are privately owned and sometimes fenced off by human settlements that exist on such routes. In addition, agricultural crops are an alternate and sometimes preferred food source of many wild animals leading to man-animal conflict. Wild Lands aims to achieve these objectives through three thematic divisions: Click on each division to know more. Elephant Corridors Goal: The restoration and securing of vital elephant corridors in India . For various historical reasons, it was decided that the Wild Lands programme would initially focus on the elephant. The existence of Asian elephants is today threatened by degradation and fragmentation of their natural habitat by the ever-increasing human population and economic development. They are thus forced into small ranges surrounded by hostile landscape resulting in increased human-elephant conflict in the fringe areas of the forest. One way of reducing the conflict and genetic isolation of these elephant population is by protecting the corridor connecting these fragmented and isolated habitats. To address this problem and conserve the elephant population of our country, the following activities are being implemented: National Corridor Project This is an ongoing project for the identification and listing of all elephant corridors in India and groundtruthing of the status of the land in several of these corridors.
