Elephant management requires determining the appropriate level of sustainable off take, and that management requires funding. With increased value of any resource, comes a responsibility, and more likely an imperative need for increased level of management. But conservation cannot be perpetually performed in a financial vacuum. In a world beset by many demands for land, if a species is to survive, a use which can be sustained both economically and ecologically, provides independence that will favor survival in the most tumultuous of times. Jasper Gerard. The RSPCA's official position, which has merely raised concerns about the treatment of elephants in zoos, is at odds with Jackie Ballard's aim that all large wild animals be removed from zoos and returned to their natural environment. If we are seen as campaigning, we will get more young people and more money.

ELEPHANT EXPERIENCES
FIRST HAND OBSEVATIONS OF ELEPHANTS ( and some other animals) IN THE UDA-WALWE PARK Most of the interactions I have had with elephants and other wild life is in the Uda-Walwe National Park of Sri Lanka. This park is situated in the south-east of the island and is about 30,000 hectares in extent. It is really the main part of the catchment area of the 3,400 hectare Walawe reservoir which forms a part of the park's southern boundary. The the resevoir is fed from the Walawe river which is dammed and the catchment waters released for downstream irrigation. With abundant sources of water and a rich and varied range of lush vegitation, the park is safe haven to about 350-400 wild elephants.Just outside the southern boundary there are large sugar cane plantations, and an electrified fence keeps marauding elephants at bay. A large adult male elephant browsing in the lush manna grass. This thick and abbrasive grass grows abundantly all over the park and can reach up to 2 meters in height. It often can camouflage the elephant almost completely, and viewing them can be very difficult. This particular male I have named "Scallops" because both his ears have neat symmetrical tear marks, like a scallop cut off. He should be about 35-40 years old and one of the more mature bulls in the park. Notice also the heavy pinkish pigmentation around the ears, front of the trunk and neck, a characteristic predominent in the mature Sri Lankan species of elephant. This is "Magic", the tallest elephant in the park, according to my estimates. He must be at least 3.25 meters tall with a high dome and forehead as is typical of all male asian elephants. Notice also the convex shaped back, steeply sloping downwards, another typical male feature in Sri lankan and asian elephants. ( In the african elephant the profile of the back tends to be more concave)

Elephant trainer gored by elephant at Six Flags Marine World
June 01 An elephant trainer at Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo was in critical condition Tuesday after he was gored by one of the pachyderms, a fire department spokesman said. Patrick Chapple, 39, was standing next to 7,000-pound Misha, a 23-year-old female African elephant, at about 3:30 p.m. when the animal turned suddenly from grazing and knocked him to the ground. When paramedics arrived, the 39-year-old man was suffering from a penetrating wound to the abdomen, but was alert and talking, according to Vallejo Fire Department spokesman William Tweedy. "All the way through," Tweedy said of the injury. A park spokesman confirmed that Chapple was gored.

They have thick, dry skin with a small amount of stiff hair, and are grey to brown in colour. Asian elephants range across India and Sri Lanka and also occur further south and east as far as Sumatra. They live in a range of habitats from grassland to wet forests. Elephants have a varied vegetarian diet, and feed on grasses, bamboo, leaves, bark, shoots, creepers and palms. They also have seasonal favourites such as fig leaves and fruits, wood apple and mango. Asian elephants are very sociable and live in basic family units of one adult cow (female) and her offspring. Daughters remain with their mothers, but sons leave when they reach adulthood, often joining bull (male) groups or living alone. Asian elephants are now listed as endangered, and have long since vanished from Southwest Asia and most of China. As the number of humans increases, the elephants' natural habitat is destroyed, and they are forced onto farming areas where they cause damage to crops. It is estimated that less than 45,000 Asian elephants remain in the wild.

Seven years ago she travelled to India and saw a very special wild elephant which stayed in her heart and mind. Now she returns to discover more about these endangered animals, and to try to find her special elephant again.
Goldie begins with an offering to the elephant-god Ganesh for good luck, and then moves to meet with Asian elephant advocate, Mark Shand, and his elephant, Tara. Overcoming her fear of getting close to the gentle giant, Goldie is thrilled to find herself bathing her and learning to ride her.
