... CLICK HERE FOR URGENT UPDATE! U.S. Zoos Launch Major Effort to Import Wild Elephants Faced with early deaths, unsuccessful captive breeding programs and the prospect that their elephant "collections" will die out over the next 50 years, U.S. zoos have launched a major effort to restock by importing young elephants from Africa and Asia. Zoos condemn elephants - many captured from the wild - to a life of captivity under conditions that do not come close to approximating life in the wild for these complex and intelligent animals.
IDA has been at the forefront of efforts to stop the zoos' import plans so that endangered and threatened elephants remain with their families in the wild where they belong. These efforts have included a successful lawsuit to prevent the Six Flags amusement park company from importing two baby Asian elephants to a Northern California amusement park. here to read more about the elephant capture.

What drives elephants wild
Wednesday, 2 October 2002
A male elephant in India sniffs a female's urinary-genital area to determine if she's in heat. (Pic: Bets Rasmussen.) Having identified the sex pheromone that turns elephants on, US scientists have now figured out how this works in a study that may improve animal breeding and reveal more about how animals detect odours.
In 1996, Professor Bets Rasmussen at the tracked down the sex pheromone in female elephant urine. It was the first example of a sex arousal pheromone for a animal leading to copulation attempts. In the latest study, Professor Rasmussen and Professor Glenn Prestwich at The University of Utah , have identified the pheromone’s target: an odorant binding protein, and the chemical steps by which the pheromone and odorant binding protein arouse the male and later may cause this state of arousal to subside.
Their research is published in the current issue of Biochemistry
"For elephants we have now discovered the pathway by which the sex attractant gets from the female’s urine to the male’s sensory organ, thereby arousing the male in a highly visible, dramatic fashion," said Dr Prestwich.
Dr Rasmussen’s work showed the male Asian elephant first uses its trunk and regular sense of smell to sniff the urine of female elephants. The male then touches the urine-laden tip of his trunk to the roof of his mouth, transferring a drop to the vomeronasal organ (VNO), a foot-long chemical-sensing organ distinct from the elephant’s regular sense of smell. If the female is in heat and her urine contains the sex attractant pheromone, the male develops a penile erection and tries to mount the female.

The country has a wide range of terrain ranging from high central, cool mountains, to lush forests, beautiful beaches and also extremely hot arid areas. Since Sri Lanka has a warm tropical climate it sustains a wide variety of flora and fauna. Most of the wild life is concentrated within the

ELEPHANT Africa Unknown Throughout history, the elephant has played an important role in human economies, religion, and culture. The immense size, strength, and stature of this largest living land animal has intrigued people of many cultures for hundreds of years. In Asia, elephants have served as beasts of burden in war and peace. Some civilizations have regarded elephants as gods, and they have been symbols of royalty for some. Elephants have entertained us in circuses and festivals around the world. For centuries, the elephant's massive tusks have been prized for their ivory. The African elephant once roamed the entire continent of Africa, and the Asian elephant ranged from Syria to northern China and the islands of Indonesia. These abundant populations have been reduced to groups in scattered areas south of the Sahara and in isolated patches in India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. Demand for ivory, combined with habitat loss from human settlement, has led to a dramatic decline in elephant populations in the last few decades. In 1930, there were between 5 and 10 million African elephants. By 1979, there were 1.3 million. In 1989, when they were added to the international list of the most endangered species, there were about 600,000 remaining, less than one percent of their original number.

The entire afternoon he had been hesitant, shuffling up and down the welltrodden path that ran through the jungle to the pond. He listened to sounds of music and laughter, of a child wailing, the squeak of a wheel cranking up a bucket of water from a well, of wet clothes being beaten against a stone, but he did not really take them in. Not today. They seemed rather jumbled. He was undergoing a strange transformation, a transformation which was perfectly normal for his age, though he did not know it. His entire body was alight, there was a dull ache in his temples, his blood seemed to rush with a new urgency. For the first time he was in musth. And he was confused, like other sixteen year olds. Biligiri was an adolescent wild male Asian elephant. He was at Kyatedevaragudi in the Biligirirangan hills of southern India. The date was 19 January 1983." Fossil records suggest that the elephant has some unlikely distant relatives, namely the small, rodentlike hyrax and the ungainly aquatic dugong. They all are thought to have evolved from a common stock related to ungulates. In East Africa many well-preserved fossil remains of earlier elephants have aided scientists in dating the archaeological sites of prehistoric man.
The African elephant is the largest living land mammal, one of the most impressive animals on earth.

There are wild elephants in the country, and numerous unicorns, whichare very nearly as big. They have hair like that of a buffalo
http://www.bagheera.com/inthewild/van_anim_rhino.htm
BLACK RHINOCEROS Africa Unknown The name "rhino" conjures up the image of a prehistoric beast, a huge creature with skin of armor. This image is not surprising, since these intelligent and affectionate creatures have inhabited the Earth for 60 million years. An extinct species of rhino that lived in Mongolia, (Baluchitherium grangeri), was the largest land mammal of all time. This hornless rhinoceros stood 18 feet (five and one-half meters) at the shoulder, was 27 feet (eight meters) long, and probably weighed 25 tons (23 metric tons), four times as much as today's African bull elephant. This species probably died out because of climate change. The rhino may be the source of the belief in unicorns, legendary animals whose horn was said to be a panacea for all types of ailments. In 1298, the Venetian explorer Marco Polo described Sumatran rhinos as unicorns saying: There are wild elephants in the country, and numerous unicorns, which are very nearly as big. They have hair like that of a buffalo, feet like those of an elephant, and a horn in the middle of the forehead, which is black and very thick.
