A Trip to Japan
Tokyo
We flew into Tokyo and stayed a few days to try and get used to the time change and culture shock. Tokyo is an amazing city with both Ancient building and traditions and a very modern edge.
(2 days) Nikko
Nikko was our first experience outside of Tokyo. Nikko is very popular destination in Japan and has an amazing collection of temples and shrines. We stayed in a traditional hotel or Ryokan.
(1 day) Aizu-Wakamatsu Spring Festival
Jo-anne - one of Thao's friends from University lives in Aizu and was nice enough to put us up for 2 days. While in Aizu, there was a spring festival at the local castle - a trip highlight.
(2 days) North West Kyoto
Kyoto - what can you say! We started with the North West of Kyoto and saw a castle, a golden temple and had a great time drinking in public.
(1 day) East Kyoto
On our second day in Kyoto we walked down the path of philosophy and hung out the Geisha district.
(1 day) Nara Nara is the origin of government in Japan. Mark worked at Tenri - a town close to Nara and Mark recommended stopping by to see the giant statue. (1 day) Toyohashi Deca, Thao's brother was staying in Toyohashi teaching English. Toyohashi isn't a regular tourist stop but it was nice to see Deca.

How does an ELECTRONICS ENGINEER . . . Get to be a SCIENCE JOURNALIST? Four years ago, Shankar Vedantam had mapped out a career in management. He was about to take his final examinations in electronic engineering at Bangalore University, in India, and then enter an MBA program. But at that moment the country's prime minister was assassinated, his examinations were postponed, and he was prevented from entering the management school for another year. To pass the time, he accepted a job as a newspaper reporter with The Times of India Philadelphia Inquirer . He is now a medicine-science reporter for Knight-Ridder's Washington bureau. "There is pleasure in straddling two fields," he says, "of bringing information from one area to another. I moved into science journalism because it seemed like a very neat way to capitalize on knowledge that I already had. In modern culture there is a huge knowledge base, but we haven't spread that knowledge very well. I feel that spreading it may be as important as generating it or acquiring it. "It's hard to find good jobs in journalism. As with science and research, the market is competitive and may even be shrinking. Still, there will always be a demand for people who have technical skills and who can write about science clearly. Many people feel intimidated by science; they will always welcome someone who can explain it to them.

04:00 AM Nov. 04, 1998 PT Xerox PARC engineers the wizards who gave us the laser printer, networking, and the modern personal computer have done it again. They're working on "electric paper," a fabric-like material that can display digital text. The "paper" is flexible. It uses far less power than a laptop display. It can achieve resolutions as good as a laser printer. Perhaps most important, it can eventually be made for US$1 a page a minuscule fraction of what it costs to make an LCD display.
