overview activities research sample work Sample Student and Teacher Work
High school teachers in the Structure and Properties of Matter and Chemical Reactions: Molecular Visualization workshop used ChemSense to create animations during the summers of 2001, 2003, and 2003. The workshops focused on developing connections between four levels of understanding of chemical concepts: the macroscopic level, the particle level, the symbolic level, and the mathematical level.
Sample animations created with ChemSense by Texas teachers:
  • An example of dynamic equilibrium (by Hall)
  • Formation of CO and NO (by Lassy)
  • Reaction energy (by Rodgers) ... (by Brode)
    San Leandro High School
In the winter of 2000 and spring of 2002 and 2003, San Leandro High School (SLHS) students used ChemSense to investigate and design experiments around the topic of solubility. Students created drawings and animations of their predictions and observations, used PASCO to collect and graph lab data, and viewed and commented on their peers' work in ChemSense.

The course presents the differential equations commonly met in electrochemistry and chemical kinetics; for example ordinary differential equations and systems of these and partial differential equations. Analytical solution methods are given, concentrating on operational methods (the Laplace transform). The second half of the course deals with numerical methods, their implementation and numerical analysis aspects. Teaching material
Mathematical notes will be handed out; for the numerical work, D. Britz, Digital Simulation in Electrochemistry, Springer. Teaching curriculum
One lecture per week and a period of about three hours weekly for tutorial or computing exercises.

    39. 10502. Electro-chemistry Of Stainless Steel
. Letter . electrochemistry of Stainless Steel. Can someone help us with theelectro-chemistry of this phenomenon ? George C. Malachowski Cytomation Inc.
    http://www.finishing.com/105/02.html
    Letter #
Electro-chemistry of Stainless Steel Aug 27, 2001 We build small saline filled chambers for biological purposes. It is required to supply a voltage to a stainless steel electrode which is placed in direct contact with the saline. The saline consists of 150 millimoles NaCl and 16 milimoles of Na2HPO4 (Sodium dibasic Phosphate) which acts as a buffer. If a stainless steel electrode and a copper electrode are placed in this solution and a voltage of about 3.5 volts is applied, the cathode (copper) discharges gas, which we assume to be hydrogen. The anode begins to form a light green soluble substance which fits the description of ferrous chloride. However if we instead use 16 millimoles of NaH2PO4 (monobasic)we see a colorless gas (oxygen ?)at the anode and no green substance at all. Can someone help us with the electro-chemistry of this phenomenon ? George C. Malachowski
Cytomation Inc. - Fort Collins, CO, USA. Aug 29, 2001 At the anode you are generating Oxygen and Chlorine and Hydrogen at the cathode. The metals in the Stainless Steel are forming Chloride salts. Nickel Chloride, Ferrous Chloride and Chromic Chloride. If the pH is above 8.0, the Nickel will probably precipitate. In time, you may find deposited Iron on the cathode with traces of Chrome. The deposit will be smutty brown with possibly a slight green tint. If you continue electrolysis, the SS will dissolve completely. The Di Sodium Phosphate used alone should be OK. If you require the Sodium Chloride for some reason, I recommend you use either a Platinum metal anode, or a Platinum clad or Platinum plated Titanium material. Carbon can also be used but will eventually fall apart. Iridium Oxide is the best of all but may be cost prohibitive.

The Advanced Materials Group (M3EM) engages in research in to the application of electro-chemical techniques to the modification of material surfaces. The key theme of this research is electro-deposition of thin film materials for corrosion protection applications. Example projects include:
    • In-situ Observations of Film Formation and Breakdown in Electrochemical Processes - Utilising Scanning Force and Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy to study nucleation and growth of electrodeposits in-situ and show the influence of various parameters on the orientation and source of defect structures that can lead to breakdown in corrosion environments.
Corrosion Behaviour of Electroless Nickel Coatings - Methods of improving the corrosion resistance of Nickel 20% phosphorus alloys are being studied by controlling the nucleation and growth of electroless depositions to minimise the defect structure and internal stress.
