Coordination Chemistry and Spectro-electro Chemistry Dr Graham Heath
We study the relationship between structure and properties of deeply coloured compounds, especially those containing heavy and precious metals. Electrons provide the bonding between the atoms in any substance as well as being the source of its colour spectrum. This is why a simple electric current can be used to bring about dramatic chemical changes such as metal-plating, or the splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen (Faraday's 'electrolysis'). Electrolysis provides a powerful way of synthesising new compounds in unusual oxidation states, that is, compounds with an altered number of electrons. Our combined spectro-electrochemical equipment allows these valuable products to have their characteristic spectra recorded instantly, as electrolysis proceeds. This approach provides unique insights on the internal structure of the molecules concerned. Computer simulation of the electrode behaviour also plays a vital role in interpreting the process of electrolytic bond making and breaking.

Dr Dr Graham Heath
E lectrons provide the bonding between the atoms in any material, so it is not surprising that electrolysis can bring about dramatic and precise chemical changes. We have developed a conceptual approach to exploring molecular electronic structure that combines electrochemical and spectroscopic methods as explained below. Computational simulation of electrode response is also a vital aspect of validating the interpretation of redox behaviour. Redox processes in simple coordination complexes may turn out to be mainly metal-centred, truly delocalised or mainly ligand-centred, as with bipyridyls. In bimetallic clusters, intensely coloured mixed-valence states can arise. In all these examples, electrosynthesis offers a logical route to the unusual oxidation states, once these have been identified by voltammetry. In particular, in situ optical spectro-electrochemistry enables quite elusive species to be studied in depth without isolation. Dr Heath made two research visits to the Photon Factory
Convolutive Modelling of Redox Processes at Disk Electrodes
For popular electro-analytical electrodes with disk geometry, the discontinuity at the perimeter between the active conducting surface and insulating annulus is a great obstacle to solving the complex differential equations. Previous treatments relied on alternative simplifications appropriate to only the short or long time limits. A hybrid analytical-numerical procedure known as the Integral Equation Method has been used to sufficiently extend the short-time expression. Convolutive Modelling is then applied to predict the response of the disk electrode under either current or potential control.

5. Electro Chemistry And Electro Metallurgy
In no department of the application of electricity to practical work has there beena greater development than in electro metallurgy and electro-chemistry.
http://www.harvestfields.netfirms.com/etexts/16/13.htm
The Story Of Electricity by John Munro 1915 Electro Chemistry And Electro Metallurgy The application of electricity to metallurgical and chemical work has been, in nearly all cases, the result of scientific research, and elaborate experimental laboratories are maintained by the various corporations interested in the present or future use of electrical processes. It is recognized by many of the older workers in this field that electrical developments are bound to come in the near future, and while they have not installed such appliances in their works yet they are keeping close watch of present developments, and in many cases experimental investigation and research is being carried on where electrical methods have not yet been introduced generally into the plant. Air from an air blast is introduced into the crucible to oxidize the impurities of the metal, particularly the sulphur and the phosphorus which are carried into the slag and this is removed by the tilting of the furnace. Fresh quantities of lime, etc., are added, and the operation is repeated until a comparatively pure metal remains, when an alloy high in carbon is added and whatever other constituents are desired for the finished steel. The charge is then tipped into the casting ladle and the part of the electric furnace is finished. For three tons of steel eight to ten hours are required in the Heroult crucible furnace. A third type of furnace that is meeting with some extensive use is the Giroud, which, like the Heroult furnace, is based on the arc and resistance in principle, but in its construction has a number of different features. As the current passes horizontally from the upper electrodes through the slag and molten metal in the furnace chamber to the base electrodes of the furnace, it permits of the easy regulation of the arcs and the use of lower electromotive force, while there is only one arc in the path of the current instead of two as in the Heroult type.

In Vivo Electrochemistry (IVEC)
In vivo electrochemistry relies on the fact that certain compounds can undergo oxidation (electron loss) or reduction (electron gain) reactions at a given applied potential. During such a reaction, the number of molecules of a substance is directly related to the number of electrons detected. Moreover, these reactions can be reliably detected on millisecond time scales, and on small surfaces. In our laboratory, we take advantage of the principles of electrochemistry in order to detect a variety of electroactive compounds in the brain. The IVEC ( I n V ivo E lectro C hemistry) system, developed at the CenSeT Measurements are carried out on carbon fiber sensors

General History
The Department of Chemistry at Southwest Missouri State University is one of nine departments comprising the College of Natural and Applied Sciences. The undergraduate chemistry program has been accredited by the American Chemical Society since 1975, and in recent years the Department has produced the greatest number of baccalaureate degrees in chemistry in all Missouri's public colleges and universities. SMSU graduates have achieved success in industrial and government laboratories and have distinguished themselves in graduate and professional schools throughout the country. During the 1990-91 academic year, a master's degree program in chemistry was approved by the SMSU Graduate Council, Faculty Senate, Central Administration, and Board of Regents. In the fall of 1992 the program was approved by the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education. Our first graduate students enrolled in the fall of 1993 and all have adjusted well to their new responsibilities as student, teacher and researcher. Return to Top
The Masters in Chemistry Program
The Master of Science in Chemistry program at SMSU is designed to prepare graduates for responsible positions in industrial or government laboratories or for advanced studies at the doctoral level.
