Up to SCIENCE HOBBYIST Up to MISCONCEPTIONS ELECTRICITY ARTICLES But how SHOULD we teach kids about 'electricity'? 1997 William Beaty This is the one thing I lack, good replacements for the incorrect material in K-6 textbooks. I'm not a teacher, so I lack the experience in teaching children. I would need this to create good curriculum material. In the following, keep in mind that I'm an electronics designer who complains about the accuracy of info in textbooks, but without having the benefit of actually USING any of these textbooks while teaching. I've only found one book which lacks all the usual misconceptions. Unfortunately it's out of print. "Basic Electricity" by Gene McWhorter, a RADIO SHACK book. Perhaps you can still order it through Radio Shack stores. It seems to be aimed at the middle high school level. It even has quizzes at the end of chapters. Unfortunately Radio Shack replaced it with "Basic Electronics", which lacks all the wonderful visual representations of electrical science found in the eariler book. An excellent commercial curriculum package is the CASTLE material. It takes a conceptual approach to electricity teaching, and is used in high school physics classes. It concentrates on charge flow and energy transfer concepts, and doesn't contain all the misleading "electricity" contradictions. There's also the old "BATTERIES AND BULBS" lesson plan. I don't know the publisher, but it's been around since about 1983 and is excellent. My own attempt at some visual/conceptual introductory material is here:

December 1996 - News Rayovac Corp. offers a brochure to help teach students about electricity, batteries and protecting the environment. In one activity, for example, students must identify, classify and list common items that use electricity. They then may call their city hall or power company to find out how electricity is generated locally. Other activities demonstrate how batteries work and what happens to them when they are thrown away. NBA player Michael Jordan invites kids to tell him what two things they would miss the most without batteries; those who write will receive a picture and a coupon for a basketball. Rayovac manufactures Renewal , alkaline batteries that can be recharged using a patented Power Station. A built-in microchip knows exactly how much power each battery needs and charges it accordingly. Rayovac Corp.

AN INTEGRATED Unit FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS
BY: JENNIFER AUFMANN
This web page is designed to teach middle to late elementary students(third to fifth grade) about the concepts of electricity through multiple hands on, reading, and writing activities. This site will give multiple electricity activities that are applicable to different academic subjects. Each activity is mainly science based but the different lessons will be altered to fit the curriculum of all academic subject areas. The activities are organized by one of the following subjects, Children's Literature, Science Lab Activities, Math Activities, Art Activities, and History Activities. Children's Literature Below is a list and short summary of children's books that incorporate the topic of electricity in some form. 1.) Berger, Melvin. "Wild Weather" Ranger Rick 1993: pg. 4-5
This issue of Ranger Rick explains thunderstorms and other kinds of "Wild Weather." It relates lightning to electricity by explaining in basic terms how electricity forms during a thunderstorm. This book is a great introductory book to relating electricity to the everyday world. Branley, Franklin M.

More than 180 activities teach thinking and reasoning skills, along with basic physical science concepts and facts. Topics range from matter and energy to simple machines and electricity. One activity requires students to make a compass using a small piece of foam, a bowl of water, and a magnetized needle, while another examines what happens to solids as they are heated and cooled. Each activity provides a list of materials, a procedure, and suggested teaching tips, as well as extensions for motivated students. Black and white diagrams illustrate the concepts involved as well as any experimental setups.

Scaling up
This is your basic principal of scaling up and you can use it for any picture you might want a big version of on your playground.
  • Get your small picture.
  • Make a grid on tracing paper that covers the picture, mark the axes of the grid with numbers and letters, so you'll always know where you are. Make the squares on the grid 1cm square.
  • Put the tracing paper with the grid over the small version and stick it in place so it won't move around.
  • Next see how big you want the big version. Say your original is 20cm x 20cm, and you want your big version to fit into an area 5m x 5m. Draw a grid in chalk on the playground that has the same number of squares as the smaller version, i.e. the lines instead of being 1cm apart are now 25cm apart. Mark the big grid with the same letter and number system.
A Tip for ease of line making at this scale: mark where the ends of the lines go on the outside of the grid, then with a willing helper stretch string that you've covered in chalk dust (or rubbed with chalk) tightly between the points touching the ground then one of you pull up the string (keeping it stretched) and PING it down where it will leave a nice straight mark on the surface.
  • Now take the top left hand square of your small version and have a good look at it. It should be grid square A1. In grid A1 on your big grid chalk in what you see in A1 on the small version. Use a different colour chalk from the grid lines so you don't get confused.

Lisa Denise Murphy
I am a graduate student in Mathematics Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . My advisor is Kenneth J. Travers . (Ken's advisees generally think he walks on water, and we're a pretty perceptive bunch.) I am particularly interested in using appropriate technology to find better ways to teach calculus to undergraduate students majoring in engineering and physics. I have written a few papers, which are available on the web. These papers are mostly about calculus instruction in one way or another, with a lot of attention to the use of technology to increase understanding. My dissertation is a comparison of two ways of using technology to introduce the derivative in a first-semester calculus course. This is the part of my site that should be changing most rapidly this semesterbut hasn't been. I'll try to do better. Really, Mom, I'm working on it. One of the instructional methods in my study uses a computer and an ultrasonic motion detector, produced by Vernier Software . As the student walks back and forth in front of the detector, the computer displays a graph of the student's motion. Motion detectors have been used successfully to teach graphing concepts to students from middle school through college. I am using the motion detector to help the students see how the speed of the motion is represented by the slope of the distance graph and the height of the velocity graph. Once this conceptual link between the slope of one graph and the magnitude of another is established, it forms a foundation for understanding the derivative.
