Departments Many departments at the Albert Nerken School of Engineering maintain their own Web sites. You can access these sites via the hyperlinks embedded in the brief descriptions below. Chemical Engineering Civil Engineering Electrical Engineering Mechanical Engineering ... Engineering (Interdisciplinary) Chemical Engineering Chemical engineering graduates find employment in a wide variety of areas. In addition to the chemical and petroleum industries, chemical engineers are involved quite heavily in the biomedical, materials and environmental fields. Because of their highly mathematical and analytical training, chemical engineers are also finding employment in nonindustrial situations such as governmental agencies, research think tanks, policy study groups and consulting firms. Undergraduate program The education of a chemical engineer involves a strong foundation in chemistry, physics and mathematics. In addition, knowledge of energy changes and reaction rates involved in chemical reactions is developed. Physical changes of substances undergoing various processes are also emphasized. The chemical engineer deals with the application of the fundamentals to processes carried out on an industrial scale in which matter undergoes changes in chemical composition or physical state. Emphasis is placed on developing creative as well as analytical ability. Facts and theories are presented primarily to stimulate further thought and study in all fields of chemical engineering. Formal instruction is supplemented by at least two annual visits to plants where typical operations of the chemical industry can be observed and analyzed with respect to equipment, utilities, labor and supervision. The student acquires firsthand experience in the chemical engineering laboratory in applying engineering analysis to equipment performance and in discovering the limitations of theoretical concepts. In addition to the usual unit operations experiments such as those in distillation, heat transfer and fluid dynamics, experiments in membrane separation and process control have recently been added. During the senior year, the student learns how to design chemical plants from fundamental data on new processes and to recognize limitations of the design.

Information on requirements to practise
The profession of engineer is regulated in Canada. It is illegal to practise the profession of engineer or to use the title "engineer" without being licensed as a full member in a provincial or territorial association. However, individuals can do engineering work under the direct supervision of licensed engineers. Provincial and territorial associations of professional engineers are responsible for setting the standards for entry into the profession and for issuing licences to those who meet established standards of qualifications and practice. Therefore, once you know where you will settle and work in Canada, you should contact the appropriate provincial or territorial association for details on licensure procedures. Below is a

Electrical Engineering
A company builds electronic communications equipment for aircraft and spacecraft. Ann is leading a design team that is working on the microwave circuit boards for a new type of spacecraft. The boards use controller chips based on silicon, but newer chips based on gallium arsenide are supposed to work better. Ann and her co-workers, Miguel and Jonathan, check the specifications of both chips and find that the newer ones are more efficient; their use will allow simplifying other circuits and increase the reliability of the device. The team is prepared to make the changes, but the added cost of the new chips will cancel the savings resulting from the simpler circuits. They decide to recommend the gallium arsenide chips anyway because of their high reliability. Reviewers in the company and in the government's space agency agree. The result of the team's design is a device that will do the job better with no increase in cost. The 20th century is rightly called the age of electricity and electronics. Electrical engineering is a profession that uses science. Electrical engineering is a profession that uses science, mathematics, computers and other technology coupled with problem solving skills to design, construct, and maintain products, services, and information systems. Electrical engineers work in researching, designing, developing, and operating many thousands of electrical systems and components that run our world. The space program would not have been possible without guidance systems designed by electrical engineers in the communications field.

Electrical Engineering
Contemporary electrical engineering is a broad discipline that encompasses a wide range of activities. A common theme is the use of electricity and electromagnetism for the generation, transmission, processing, storage, conversion, and control of information and energy. An equally important aspect is the human interface and the role of individuals as the sources and recipients of information. The rates at which information is transmitted today range from megabits per second to gigabits per second and, in some cases, as high as terabits per second. The range of frequencies over which these processes are studied extends from direct current (i.e., zero frequency), to microwave and optical frequencies. The need for increasingly faster and more sophisticated methods of handling information poses a major challenge to the electrical engineer. New materials, devices, circuits, systems, and networks are needed to build the advanced communications and information-handling systems of the future. Previous innovations in electrical engineering have had a dramatic impact on the way in which we work and live: the transistor, integrated circuits, computers, radio and television, satellite transmission systems, lasers, fiber optic transmission systems, and medical electronics.
The Department
The faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department at Columbia University is dedicated to continued innovation through its program of academic instruction and research. Our undergraduate academic program is designed to prepare the student for a career in industry or business by providing him or her with a thorough foundation of the fundamental concepts and analytical tools of contemporary electrical engineering. A wide range of elective courses permits the student to emphasize specific disciplines such as telecommunications, integrated circuits and systems, microelectronics, digital systems, or photonics.

This page exists to point students and others doing electronic design projects to Internet information and software resources. It targets Educational institutions, individuals, corporations and on-line magazines who have good design and project oriented resources : it's NOT intended to be "the ultimate list of all electrical engineering links". (Other sites have tackled that task: see our EE Index Links. In fact, I've been so overwhelmed by the growth in the number of electronics companies and their Web sites that from here on out (3/5/1999) I will only add links here that are of practical use for student projects
If you know of other sites relevant to E.E. design, by all means send me e-mail so I can add it to the list. Also, please let me know about any links that don't work or need updating. I have found that many questions that students bring to the E.E. Shop, especially regarding microprocessors,
