Your Career as an electrical engineer. An electrical engineer may choose to couplethe technical aspects of a position with management responsibilities.
http://www.ieeeusa.org/careers/yourcareer.html
Your Career in the Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering Fields My engineering education challenged me
to reach for the stars. And one day
I found myself standing on the moon... Gene Cernan, Commander, Apollo XVII In the 1700s, Benjamin Franklin, Alessandro Volta, Luigi Galvani, and other early thinkers sought to understand the nature of an unseen, unnamed energy. Their test materials consisted of such things as kites, frogs' legs, zinc, and salt water. But their findings allowed pioneers in the 18OOsAmpere, Faraday, Ohm, and Oerstedto discover the electrical properties known as charge, resistance, potential, and current, and the dynamics among them. Within the next hundred years, Charles Wheatstone and Samuel F. B. Morse had developed electrical communication, resulting in networks of telegraph lines over land and under the sea. The telephone was beginning to transform the concept of communication within cities, while Edison's incandescent light shone in factories, stores, schools, and homes. In 1904 John Ambrose Fleming's diode tube harnessed the electron in a revolutionary way. Electronics was born. As the heirs to Faraday's and Flemings work, today's electrical, electronics, and computer engineers, technologists, and technicians continue to revolutionize the way we live. We depend on the hundreds of thousands of these individuals who design, produce, operate and maintain a vast array of equipment and services.

About Electrical and Computer Engineering
What is Electrical Engineering?
Simply put, electrical engineering is the application of the laws of physics governing electricity, magnestism, and light to develop products and services for the benefit of humankind. Okay, so what is Computer Engineering? Computer Engineering is the design, construction, implementation, and maintenance of computers and computer controlled equipment for the benefit of humankind. Most universities offer Computer Engineering as either a degree program of its own or as a sub-discipline of Electrical Engineering. With the widespread use and intergration of computers into our everyday lives, it's hard to separate what an Electrical Engineer needs to know and what a Computer Engineer needs to know. Because of this, several universities offer a dual degree in both Electrical and Computer Engineering. The ESCAPE center at Purdue University has a wealth of information on Electrical Engineering.

Profiles of Electrical Engineers
Spectrum History Money ... Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers The information presented in "Spectrum" is intended to give you a bird's-eye view of the professions of electrical engineering and computer engineering / computer science. It is based on the experience and judgment of IEEE members who have measured the pulse of their own industry sectors over the years. You can use it to guide your research on the job market so that you can plan the direction of your career.
The IEEE History Center has prepared an overview of the history and profession of electrical engineering and computer science as part of the "Spectrum" section.
The general scheme of presentation is to first review some of the great variety of specialties that electrical and electronics engineering, computer engineering, and computer science encompass, then to examine the representative industry sectors in which practitioners of these specialties find employment. This overview describes the kinds of work you can expect to do in a given field. It suggests ways to prepare for a career in the field. It indicates some of the companies that are the major players in the various sectors and lists major resources in each field for your further investigation.
The discussion is divided broadly into "electrical and electronics engineering" and "computer science and engineering." Many authorities believe that the two fields have now established separate identities, although they still have much in common.

98. What Is Electrical Engineering?
What is an electrical engineer? Upon graduation, you ll choose your own career pathbased on academic and work experience. electrical engineering at Waterloo.
http://www.ece.uwaterloo.ca/www_info/whatis_ee.html
What is an Electrical Engineer?
An Electrical Engineer is someone who
  • designs and implements a fibre-optic transmission module for a high-speed telephone network; develops and programs a computer control system for an automated production line; plans and supervises the electrical distribution network between a remote electrical generating station and the end-users separated by hundreds of kilometres.
These are a small sample of what electrical engineering has to offer. Electrical Engineering began over 100 years ago and has been expanding into new fields ever since. Electrical Engineering can be classified into two broad areas:
  • Energy - the transfer of energy from one point to another. This could be over large distances from a hydro-power dam to a power user, or it could be from a central transformer to a manufacturing plant. Information - the transfer of information from one point to another. Both the message sent and the devices used to transfer the information are part of this field. The information could be sound, data or images. This transfer of information could take place in satellites, televisions, computer systems, telephone networks, portable radios or sound systems. In the past few decades there has been significant growth in this area of electrical engineering.
  • The above two fields within electrical engineering allow for a broad range of career choices and specialization. At Waterloo, you will have the opportunity to explore your options academically and through the co-op workterms. Upon graduation, you'll choose your own career path based on academic and work experience.
