There are several reasons for the continuing interest in these vehicles:
  • Electric cars create less pollution than gasoline -powered cars, so they are an environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles (especially in cities).
  • Any news story about hybrid cars usually talks about electric cars as well.
  • Vehicles powered by fuel cells are electric cars, and fuel cells are getting a lot of attention right now in the news.

44. Electric Vehicles (EV) And Their Benefits
Unlike electric vehicles, motor vehicles generate more air pollution than any other humanmade machine. electric vehicles, have a zero tailpipe emission.
http://home.tampabay.rr.com/rageer/evs/
As time approaches the 21st century, the automobile has become our major source of mass transportation. Everything about our culture and society has developed around this necessary form of travel. However, along with this necessity comes the issue of pollution to the environment. These great gasoline powered vehicles have contributed greatly to the impurity of our environment. Finding an alternative source of energy to power these transportation vehicles is an obvious way of solving this problem. One of the prominent alternative fueled vehicles yet brought up is the electric car
EVS History

The origin of the automoble can be traced to Europe. However, it first became more widely developed in America in the early 1900's through pioneer automakers like Ransom E. Olds and Henry Ford. Although a few people diliked these new "horseless carriages," many approved of this new machine because it would replace horse-drawn carriages. They would no longer have to stand up to that horrible stench left from horse droppings and swarms of disease-bearing flies. However, this idea was obviously short sighted, because their one invention built for comfort and less "pollution" caused more through its emissions. Obviously this problem of pollution emitted from the car needed to be solved, and thus came about the idea of alternative fueled vehicles. One of the most well known alternative fueled vehicles would be the the electric car

How does an Electric Vehicle Work?
Some of the earliest automobiles were powered by electric motors driven by batteries. But rapid advances to internal combustion engines quickly drove the heavier, range-limited EVs from the market. The pressing need to reduce air pollution together with new advanced batteries and motors have allowed EVs to reappear as a clean alternative to internal combustion vehicles. Electric drive systems are virtually non-polluting and extremely energy efficient. Whereas only about 20% of the chemical energy in gasoline gets converted into useful work at the wheels of an internal combustion vehicle, 75% or more of the energy from a battery reaches its wheels. Another advantage of electric motors is their ability to provide power at almost any engine speed. While internal combustion engines must be revved up to high rpm to achieve maximum power, electric motors provide nearly peak power even at low speeds. This gives electric vehicles strong acceleration performance from a stop. Ultimately it's the batteries that will determine the cost and performance of EVs. There are several major types of automotive batteries available and under development, from advanced lead-acid batteries like those that start our internal combustion engine vehicles, to nickel-metal hydride, to lithium polymer batteries. Even the best of these, however can store only a few percent of the energy of a gallon of gasoline in the same volume. The greater efficiency of electric motors helps a lot, but the range of EVs is still limited.

It's no accident that the two highest fuel economy vehicles for 2004 are hybrid vehicles. Hybrid electric vehicles combine the best features of internal combustion engines and electric motors In the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius both the engine and the electric motor are connected to the wheels by the same transmission With the assistance of the electric motor the engine can be smaller. Intelligent power electronics decide when to use the motor and engine and when to store electricity in advanced batteries for future use. The electric motor is used primarily for low speed cruising or to provide extra power for acceleration or hill climbing. When braking or coasting to a stop, the hybrid uses its electric motor as a generator to produce electricity, which is then stored in its battery pack

Toyota plans all gas-electric vehicles by 2012
October 25, 2002 BY JOHN LIPPERT
BLOOMBERG NEWS Toyota Motor Corp., the world's third-largest automaker, plans to use gasoline-electric hybrid engines in all vehicles by 2012 to increase fuel efficiency and reduce tailpipe emissions, an executive said. The gasoline-electric system emits as much as 40 percent less carbon dioxide than traditional internal-combustion engines, said Masatami Takimoto, managing director for engine engineering, in an interview at a Detroit conference. Toyota was the first to sell a hybrid, with the Prius car in 1997. The company sold 5.9 million cars and trucks last year, including 36,928 hybrids. Automakers want to cut emissions as governments tighten pollution rules, and some rivals such as General Motors Corp. are focusing on fuel cells rather than hybrids. Toyota is the only automaker capable of soon building enough hybrids to overcome the current $3,000-a-vehicle cost disadvantage against traditional cars and trucks, said Fitch Ratings analyst Chris Struve. "The only way to bring costs down is to increase production," said Struve, who is based in Chicago and studies the effect of new technology and environmental rules on automakers. "If they can pull it off, their fuel economy would be beautiful and they'd never have to worry about emissions."

About This Page
There is a perception in the general public in North America that there are no on-road electric vehicles, or very few, and that those are predominantly expensive prototypes built by the major automakers. The mass media and major automakers are not interested in correcting that misconception. So here is a listing of on-road electric vehicles we know about, mostly conversions done by individuals and small companies. This list is undoubtedly incomplete, and contributions are always welcome This list is for on-road electric vehicles currently licensed / insured for operation. Vehicles that were in regular operation but are currently out of service can be included, but will have a "non-op" status note in their listing. Vehicles which are no longer operational, "lost", or destroyed are denoted by angle braces [] around them, and are not included in counts. Projects are not included on this list until they are on the road, at which time we will be pleased to add them. If you have information regarding an EV of historical interest, we would be happy to include that on the EV History page This list is not for environmental-wannabe's. Electric-assist cars like the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius need not apply. If you have a Honda Insight, you may wish to register at

http://www.toyota.com/html/shop/vehicles/ravev/rav4ev_0_home/
Toyota Motor Corporation discontinued production of the RAV4 Electric Vehicle worldwide in the spring of 2003. Therefore, Toyota will no longer take orders for the RAV4 EV. Toyota remains committed to developing an "Eco Vehicle," one that will have a minimal impact on the environment. Toyota believes that in order to have a positive environmental impact, a large number of consumers must embrace the technology. In order for this to happen, the vehicle must meet the lifestyle needs of, and be affordable to, the mass market. Although a significant marketing effort was undertaken for the RAV4-EV, we only sold about 300 vehicles a year. In addition to overall customer acceptance, technical issues tied to electric vehicles remain a major hurdle. The California Air Resources Board published a guidance statement regarding EV battery life. The guideline stated that when the battery capacity decreases to less than 80% of the original capacity, the battery needs to be replaced. A battery's capacity is the amount of charge that it holds, and is commonly measured by the range of the vehicle. It is cost-prohibitive to replace an EV battery. The cost to replace the battery is more than the value of the vehicle. Although Toyota's electric vehicle sales have proved disappointing, Toyota was able to leverage valuable technology from the development and sales of the RAV4-EV. For example, some of the technology involved in the Hybrid Synergy Drive system on the next generation Prius came from the RAV4-EV. Toyota was the first company to introduce a hybrid vehicle to the mass market in 1997. Now, the second generation Prius is coming out. It's larger, faster, gets better fuel mileage than before, and is 90 percent cleaner for smog-forming emissions than the average vehicle on the road. It is affordable and appealing to the mainstream market, which should result in an expansion in the number of consumers driving cleaner vehicles. Toyota has sold more than 100,000 hybrid vehicles worldwide, and 52,000 Prius hybrids in the United States.
