"Politics is a good thing!" … is the slogan of Dr. Larry J. Sabato ( sabato@virginia.edu ). According to the Wall Street Journal, Dr. Sabato is "probably the most quoted college professor in the land," while the Washington Post called him "the Mark McGwire of political analysts" and he is dubbed by Fox News Channel as "America's favorite political scientist." As founder and director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics, Dr. Sabato bridges the gap between the ivory tower and the real world on issues of critical importance to American democracy and the challenges facing our political process. Dr. Sabato is currently working on two books about the 2004 election - one to be published ahead of election day as a guide to voters, and one analyzing the election results in early 2005. Both books will be published by Longman. Dr. Sabato is also regularly updating "Sabato's Crystal Ball," a critically acclaimed election analysis website which predicted results for the 2002 midterm elections, and looks ahead to the 2004 scene ( www.centerforpolitics.org/crystalball

Lesson Plans Social Studies History Election 2000 This November 7th, Election Day won't be complete without a vote in your classroom. You might even choose to have an early election, then vote again in November and compare the results. What might your students learn about the candidates to make them change their votes? We've created a PDF ballot for you to download and use in your classroom. It lists Democrat, Republican, Reform, Green, Libertarian, Natural Law, Socialist, and Constitution presidential candidates. There is also room for a write-in candidate. Below the candidates, students can choose their top three voting issues, again with room to write in an optional issue. Something you want to leave off the ballot? Just use a little white-out or cover with a piece of paper before making copies. The ballots are 2-up on a standard 8.5x11 inch sheet, so you can just cut the finished copies in half. Click here to the Decision 2000 Presidential Ballot PDF.

May 23, 2001 Thank you for reopening the dialogue on school violence with the May 2 editorial, “Commandments won’t cut gun fire,” written in reference to a suggestion of posting the Ten Commandments in classrooms.
We need an extended public forum on this problem and certainly we do not want to wait for the next incident to remind us.
The writer calls the posting of the Ten Commandments suggestion a “delusive quick-fix solution.” However, the writer’s alternative of keeping guns away from teen-agers seems to me the “delusive quick-fix solution.”
The bigger issue is our children. How can we help them to cope? How can we prevent the despair and the deep sense of helplessness and alienation that leads to such violence?
Without blaming parents, schools, gun advocates or the entertainment industry, we need to look at where we are and what we can do to change our direction.
To teach Judaism or Christianity in the public schools would be a violation of our Constitution. However, to teach comparative religion would not. And to teach comparative religion to young children would be to compare moral values across cultures and across religions.

    Special to The Desert Sun
April 8th, 2001 On a very busy day at work a frantic coworker screams, “There was a shooting at the high school!”
You become gripped with fear because your child attends that school.
Traffic signals, speed limits and pedestrians go unnoticed as you arrive two blocks from the school where throngs of police, and emergency vehicles have every path hopelessly blocked.
The school grounds are littered with a curious community. News crews have set up camp with trucks, satellite dishes and video cameras.
Half walking, half running, you rapidly approach the building where a radio announcer instructed parents to meet students.
You are overwhelmed by the hundreds of hysterical parents, relatives and students who are crying and hugging as they describe horrific scenes in disbelief. The area is teeming with victim-assistance counselors, authorities and clergy. Stores and fast-food services hurriedly are ushering in food, drinks and water. When recognizing students and parents, you repeat nervously, “Have you seen my child?”

Local refugees say U.S. must teach democracy
    By Meg Murphy
Staff Writer LAWRENCE Haitians need U.S. Marines to restore security to their nation, but to maintain the peace, the people of Haiti need to be taught how to govern fairly, say several Lawrence residents who fled the country as youths. Jude Charles, a community activist, says it hurts him to see Haitians setting each other on fire, shooting and burning and looting stores. He said his countrymen must learn the patience to wait for an election when they oppose an official. But before they can do that, he said, the country must have a system that includes fair elections. Flawed elections in 2000 led to the uprising that toppled Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Haiti's first democratically elected president, for the second time. A military junta ousted him once before one of more than 30 coups in Haiti's 200-year history as an independent nation. "Here is a good chance for Haiti to get democracy," Charles said. But, he said, Haitians have watched dictators flee the country before only to have instability and terror return in anther form. Charles, 55, as a young man, fled the rule of Francis "Papa Doc" Duvalier, who was "president for life" when Charles left Haiti. Charles escaped death at the hands of Duvalier's feared Tontons Macoutes, or secret police, on several occasions after he spoke out about such things as the unjustified arrest of a neighbor.
