The explicit goals of this lesson were to build upon previous traditional instruction in the Cartesian plane, plotting and graphing, and linear functions to include real-world applications of fitting lines to data, performing linear regressions, and interpreting the results. These goals were greatly enhanced by the use of computer and calculator technology to incorporate up-to-the-minute data from the 2000 Presidential election, to construct linear models and to discuss larger issues surrounding the results. Students came away with a sense of how mathematical modeling can and cannot be used to understand and interpret real-world data. Underlying concepts included were deterministic vs. probabilistic models; predictive behavior; correlation and causation; and interpolation vs. extrapolation. [These are discussed below in the Detail of the Activities.]

All Grades Pre-K K-2 Higher Ed Search 100,000+ top educational sites, lessons and more! Election 2000! "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” —Presidential Oath, U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 Ready or not, Election 2000 is here and the political roller coaster by which we elect our nation's highest officeholder has begun. Its time again for the endless promises, accusations, news bytes, hype and spin. If educated adults find presidential elections puzzling and frustrating, imagine how crazy they must appear to children! In fact, a recent "unofficial poll" of a bright 5th grader in the Education Planet neighborhood revealed this inevitable confusion. First we asked, "What is an election"? The answer we got was, "It is when people give their opinions on who should be president or get some very important job". Not bad! However, we then asked, "What is the Electoral College?" The answer was, "I think that's a school where they teach people who want to be president how to make good choices." Don't we wish that were true! But then, how many educated adults can explain the role and workings of the electoral college? Clearly, there is a lot of hype and confusion regarding any election and Election 2000 will be no different. To assist educators and parents help students find their way through this thoroughly crazy, but essential national contest, Education Planet has prepared this Election 2000! resource. Here you will find information about the history of the Presidency and the workings of the Constitution; how campaigns are run and financed; the low-down on the major candidates, the latest election news and the contributions of our first ladies. We also provide you with a list of excellent activities and lesson plans, as well as some great educational materials, including books, videos, software and more, all relating to elections and the presidency and all available now through the Education Planet Store. And in keeping with this topic, make sure your favorite student votes - in our Election 2000 Student Voter Poll!

STATE AND LOCAL BALLOT INITIATIVES Transitioning to a Working Government Report of the National Workshop on Internet Voting: Issues and Research Agenda Conducted by the Internet Policy Institute and sponsored by the National Science Foundation, this report has made headlines with its conclusion that online "voting from home" was not yet a feasible reality. The 62-page report finds that "remote Internet voting systems pose significant risk to the integrity of the voting process, and should not be fielded for use in public elections until substantial technical and social science issues are addressed." On the other hand, the report does recommend that trials of poll site Internet voting systems should be conducted in the next several election cycles to determine the convenience, reliability, accuracy, and feasibility of such systems. Sports October 10, 2000 A War of Words The First Round Presidential contenders George W. Bush and Al Gore faced each other last week in the first of three nationally televised and closely watched debates. What can you learn from these debates and how can it affect your view of the candidates? For the past 40 years, debates like these have been widely considered the turning points in presidential elections. Why they might be the turning points is itself a matter of debate.
  • Some view presidential debates as "beauty contests," in which the candidate who looks "presidential" or sounds the best gets the biggest boost. Others say that debates provide the best opportunity for millions of viewers to understand where the participants stand on important issues. Still others think of these debates as gladiatorial contests of wit and language.
What Debates Can Reveal What Debates Cannot Reveal Riverdeep Today's series culminates with two weekly features: "All Politics Is Local" (Oct. 30), a video exploration of the problems candidates face when running for state office.
