Few Spanish women came to the country, however, so many Spanish men took Native American women as their mates. Today nearly 90 percent of the population is mestizo, of mixed European and Native American descent. People of purely Native American descent represent about 5 to 10 percent of the population, while people of European descent represent only about 1 percent. El Salvador’s population, 5.2 million according to the 1992 census, was estimated at 6,237,662 in 2001. It grew rapidly during the 20th century, at times increasing more than 3 percent a year. According to a 2001 estimate, El Salvador is the most densely populated country on the mainland of the Americas, with 296 persons per sq km (768 per sq mi). This compares with only 12 inhabitants per sq km (31 per sq mi) in 1821 and 38 per sq km (98 per sq mi) in 1900.

Allende wins the 1970 elections; achievements and problems of the Popular Unity; the tank attack ( el tanquetazo ) against the constitutional government; the definitive coup (September 11, 1973). This site features essays about the period and rare photographs of the events it describes.

History of Chile under Salvador Allende and the Popular Unity
INTRODUCTION But now, after his ill-fated trip to Great Britain, the wall of immunity that Pinochet had built around himself and his collaborators in the Chilean military appears to be collapsing. In a 14 to 6 vote, the Chilean Supreme Court removed Pinochet's congressional immunity, making it likely he will stand trial for his alleged involvement in the torture and deaths of thousands who opposed his military regime. The way would then at last be cleared for those Chileans still seeking justice -and the full truth- on behalf of their tortured, killed, or vanished relatives and friends. Finally, having undertaken this research as a graduate student of History at the City University of New York for the course The Historian and the Computer, the purpose of this website is to provide the visitor with a comprehensive description of several events that led to the downfall of Salvador Allende and the Popular Unity government.
BIBLIOGRAPHY The single best historical source for this period is Los mil dias de Allende Another important source is Chile: la memoria prohibida Tanquetazo and ends in 1983.

El Salvador El Salvador's name still evokes images of the brutal civil war fought throughout the 1980s in its tangle of mountains and farmlands. The war, however, is over and the most turbulent aspect of El Salvador today is thankfully just its volcanic landscape. El Salvador offers a whole new experience - watching a country strive to redefine itself. International organizations are helping to rebuild El Salvador, and participating in these developments and talking to the locals about their experiences and hopes are perhaps the most productive ways to visit.
