Land/Geography El Salvador is divided into two highland mountain ranges and three areas at lower elevations. The northern mountains, composed of the Metapán and the Chalatenango chains, form the border with Honduras in the north and descend in the south to the interior plain of the Lempa River valley, running generally east to west; the valley then rises to meet higher volcanic ranges to the south. Of the 20 major volcanoes located in these southern ranges, several are active and one erupted as recently as 1946.

The flooding and landslides in El Salvador from Hurricane Mitch resulted in 374 persons killed and 55,864 displaced. Twelve of the country's 14 departments suffered significant damage, but the hardest-hit areas are in the low-lying coastal zones, particularly those bordering the Lempa and San Miguel Grande rivers. Roughly 163,000 acres were flooded, and 15 major bridges were damaged or destroyed.

Even so, El Salvador has experienced sizable deficits in both its trade and its fiscal accounts. The trade deficit has been offset by remittances from the large number of Salvadorans living abroad and from external aid. El Salvador sustained damage from Hurricane Mitch, but not as much as other Central American countries. Inflation and the trade deficit are expected to rise somewhat as a result. Population below poverty line: 48.3% (1992 est.)

El Salvador has a developing economy. Tourism facilities are not fully developed. The capital is San Salvador.
ENTRY AND EXIT REQUIREMENTS: A current U.S. passport and a one-entry tourist card are required to enter El Salvador. The tourist card may be obtained for a fee from airlines serving El Salvador. Travelers who plan to remain in El Salvador for more than thirty days can apply for a multiple-entry visa, issued free of charge, from the Embassy of El Salvador in Washington, D.C. or from a Salvadoran consulate in the United States. Travelers may be asked to present evidence of U.S. employment and adequate finances for their visit at the time of visa application or upon arrival in El Salvador. An exit tax must be paid, either in Salvadoran colones or U.S. dollars, when departing El Salvador from Comalapa International Airport in La Paz.
Travelers should be aware that airlines operating out of Comalapa International Airport require that passengers boarding flights bound for the United States have appropriate travel documents. Under airline policy, certificates of naturalization and birth certificates are not accepted by the airlines as travel documents. Passengers must have a valid, current U.S. passport to board flights to return to the United States, and information to the contrary should be disregarded. U.S. citizens traveling to El Salvador for any reason without valid passports must apply for a passport in person at the U.S. Embassy in San Salvador before attempting to return to the United States. Citizens applying for passports overseas are reminded that original proof of citizenship and identity is required before a passport can be issued. Photographic proof of identity is especially important for young children because of the high incidence of fraud involving children.
