The Modern Presidency
A student created project involving utilization of cable television technology and computer access during Fall 1997.
Created by students enrolled in Introduction to Social Science class (freshman level) at Vincennes Lincoln High School, Vincennes, Indiana, during October and November, 1997. Teacher of the class is Mr. Michael Hutchison.
Students used the Discovery Channel School series, The Modern Presidency to research 20 th Century presidents. They were required to create a web page highlighting their research and their president.
Special thanks and acknowledgments to:
Mrs. Tish Raff , Discovery Channel Subject Area Mentor, Modern Presidency Series, for her encouragement and help during the summer and fall of 1997. Mr. Don Taylor , director of systems technology at Lincoln High School, who provided encouragement, taped the entire "Modern Presidency" series for me, and also purchased the Presidency series from PBS in order for both the freshmen and senior classes to complete their projects. American President Dwight David Eisenhower, 1890-1969
America's 34th President, Dwight David Eisenhower, one of 7 sons of a poor Kansas family rose to lead one of history's largest armed forces and later a nation. Having commanded the Allied Forces during World War II, served as the first Supreme Commander of NATO and guided America to peace by ending the Korean War, Dwight D. Eisenhower died in his 8th year of retirement on March 28th, 1969. David Dwight Eisenhower was born in Denison, Texas in 1890, the 3rd of 7 sons of David Eisenhower and his wife Ida Stover, a deeply religious couple who moved their family to Abilene, Kansas, soon after the birth of their 3rd son. Named for his father who was a mechanic, Eisenhower was called Dwight David to eliminate confusion, and all the Eisenhower boys were tagged "Ike" by their father in much the way they might have been called "pal". The Eisenhowers were extremely poor and all of the sons worked as soon as they were able, beginning with house chores and labor in the gardens that fed the large family until they were old enough for outside jobs. Dwight excelled at sports and showed small interest in school, though he was enthralled by history and managed to be an average student despite his schedule of jobs and sports. He maintained through life a passion for golf, and as President had squirrels "Banned from the White House" after he discovered their nut burying wreaked havoc on his putting green.

Dwight D. Eisenhower DWIGHT DAVID EISENHOWER, 1890-1969), American general and 34th president of the United States. He was the principal architect of the successful Allied invasion of Europe during WORLD WAR II and of the subsequent defeat of Nazi Germany. As president, Eisenhower ended the Korean War, but his two terms (1953-1961) produced few legislative landmarks or dramatic initiatives in foreign policy. His presidency is remembered as a period of relative calm in the United States. Eisenhower spent his first 50 years in almost total obscurity. A professional soldier, he was not even particularly well known within the U.S. Army. His rise to fame during World War II was meteoric: a lieutenant colonel in 1941, he was a five-star general in 1945. As supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, he commanded the most powerful force ever assembled under one man. He is one of the few generals ever to command major naval forces; he directed the world's greatest air force; he is the only man ever to command successfully an integrated, multinational alliance of ground, sea, and air forces. He led the assault on the French coast at Normandy, on June 6, 1944, and held together the Allied units through the European campaign that followed, concentrating everyone's attention on a single objective: the defeat of Nazi Germany, completed on May 8, 1945. In 1950, President Harry

Presidential Temperament
Excerpted from Presidential Temperament , by David Keirsey and Ray Choiniere
The year 1912 was a presidential election year, and former President Theodore Roosevelt was again campaigning for the nation's highest office. By the evening of October 14 his campaign had carried him to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was to deliver a speech in the city's public auditorium. The time was nearing for him to speak, so he strode from his hotel onto the sidewalk outside, where a car was waiting to take him to the auditorium. As Roosevelt walked toward the car a man suddenly stepped up to him and pointed a pistol at his heart. The gunman pulled the trigger and a bullet burst from the pistol and smashed its way into Roosevelt's chest. His shirt was suddenly spattered with red, and more blood immediately began seeping from the ugly hole. The bullet had come to rest against his rib cage, a mere half inch from his lungs. "He pinked me!" shouted Roosevelt, as bystanders rushed to subdue the gunman, John Shrank. They wrestled Shrank to the ground and then, seeing Roosevelt's bloody clothing, prepared to rush him to the hospital. But they found Teddy Roosevelt a more difficult man to deal with than the would-be assassin. "TR" adamantly refused to go for help. "You just stay where you are!" he thundered. "I am going to make this speech and you might as well compose yourself." Teddy Roosevelt was as good as his word that October evening. Still wearing his torn and red-stained shirt, he had himself driven to the auditorium and there, Shrank's bullet lodged in his chest, he pulled out his blood-spattered notes and gave his speech. "I have a message to deliver," he declared to the stunned audience, "and I will deliver it as long as there is life in my body."

Over the next 25 years, he served at posts around the world and steadily rose through the Army ranks. When the United States entered World War II after Pearl Harbor, Eisenhower became one of the Allies' foremost military strategists. As commander of U.S. forces in Europe, he planned the invasions of Northern Africa (1942), Sicily and Italy (1943). Promoted to Allied commander in chief, he directed the Normandy invasion (June 1944) and the brutal year-long campaign through Europe which led to the German surrender. In December, 1944, the Army made him a five-star general, its highest rank.
Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) After the war, he briefly headed the U.S. occupation forces in Germany, then returned to Washington to serve as Army chief of staff. In 1948, he retired from active military duty and became president of Columbia University. Two years later, he returned to military leadership as commander of NATO forces in Europe. In 1952, both political parties courted the extremely popular war hero as a possible presidential candidate. He opted to run as a Republican, easily won the election and served two terms. As President, he forged a quick truce in the Korean War in 1953 and later pursued international disarmament agreements, albeit with little success. He also adopted a hardline anti-communist stance, using military aid and occasionally U.S. troops to counter Soviet expansionism and to undermine leftist movements around the world. In domestic policy, he strove to remain nonpartisan and exerted little direction.
