Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969), 34th President of the United States (1953-1961) and General of the Army
Dwight David Eisenhower was born at Denison, Texas, on 14 October 1890. He was raised at Abilene, Kansas, where his family moved when he was an infant. Eisenhower entered the U.S. Military Academy, at West Point, New York, in 1911 and graduated in 1915. Following commissioning as an officer of the United States Army, he served initially in Texas and subsequently in a variety of other posts at home and abroad. Training duties during World War I prevented him from seeing combat action. After the war Eisenhower worked directly with several of the Army's most important officers, among them Douglas MacArthur and George C. Marshall, earning a reputation as one of the service's premier staff officers. Soon after the United States entered World War II, Brigadier General Eisenhower was put in charge of Army war plans. Five months later he was given command of U.S. forces in the British Isles. In November 1942 Lieutenant General Eisenhower led the invasion of North Africa and the subsequent operations that, after hard fighting that produced vital combat experience for the as yet unseasoned Army, drove the Germans and Italians from the southern shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Promoted to the rank of General early in 1943, Eisenhower commanded the invasions of Sicily in July and of the Italian mainland in September of that year.

, supreme commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II, chief of staff of the U.S. Army, and thirty-fourth president of the United States. Eisenhower's personal leadership qualities were crucial in fusing an enormous fighting force made up of disparate armies and egocentric leaders. He brought those same talents to the White House, where he concentrated on his role as a national unifier. Eisenhower, born in Denison, Texas, and raised in Abilene, Kansas, graduated from West Point in 1915. He served as a captain in the First World War and worked under Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines from 1936 until 1939, afterward spending a brief period in Washington with the Office of Chief of Staff. After Pearl Harbor he commanded U.S. forces in Great Britain, leading the invasions of North Africa and Italy in 1943. The confidence of Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt in his abilities resulted in his appointment as supreme commander of Allied forces in Western Europe, with responsibility for planning the cross-channel invasion of France on D-Day. Among the best-regarded World War II military leaders, Eisenhower was appointed chief of staff in 1945, succeeding Gen. George C. Marshall. His subsequent service as president of Columbia University in 1948 was brief; by 1951 he was back in uniform as supreme commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

A popular politician, Eisenhower held office during a period of domestic and international tension, although the USA was experiencing an era of post-war prosperity and growth. Major problems during his administration included the ending of the Korean War , the growing civil-rights movement at home, and the Cold War . His proposals on disarmament and the control of nuclear weapons led to the first International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, held under the auspices of the United Nations at Geneva in 1955.

    DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
(Portrait) President Dwight D. Eisenhower recognized the importance of intelligence from his days as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during World War II. During the Eisenhower administration, technological advances enabled CIA to collect information previously unavailable. The U-2 reconnaissance aircraft and CORONA satellite reconnaissance programs both began under Eisenhower, permitting CIA to penetrate the Iron Curtain. CIA began construction of its present headquarters complex in Langley, Virginia, in 1959. In a November ceremony, the President along with his Director of Central Intelligence Allen Dulles laid the cornerstone of the current Original Headquarters Building.
"AMERICA'S FUNDAMENTAL aspiration is the preservation of peace. To this end we seek to develop policies and arrangements to make the peace both permanent and just. This can be done only on the basis of comprehensive and appropriate information. "In war nothing is more important to a commander than the facts concerning the strength, dispositions, and intentions of his opponent, and the proper interpretation of those facts. In peacetime the necessary facts are of a different nature. They deal with conditions, resources, requirements, and attitudes prevailing in the world. They and their correct interpretation are essential to the development of policy to further our long-term national security and best interests. To provide information of this kind is the task of the organization of which you are a part.

    The Row of Dominoes
    Dwight D. Eisenhower
    Presidential Press Conference
    April 7, 1954
    Q. Robert Richards, Copley Press : Mr. President, would you mind commenting on the strategic importance of Indochina for the free world? I think there has been, across the country, some lack of understanding on just what it means to us. The President . You have, of course, both the specific and the general when you talk about such things. First of all, you have the specific value of a locality in its production of materials that the world needs. Then you have the possibility that many human beings pass under a dictatorship that is inimical to the free world. Finally, you have broader considerations that might follow what you would call the "falling domino" principle. You have a row of dominoes set up, you knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is the certainty that it will go over very quickly. So you could have a beginning of a disintegration that would have the most profound influences. Now, with respect to the first one, two of the items from this particular area that the world uses are tin and tungsten. They are very important. There are others, of course, the rubber plantations and so on.

    • Although orphaned as a child, he was a self-made millionaire. When Hoover took office the United States was prosperous and many people felt someone with Hoover’s background would be the right person to help the country become even more prosperous. On October 29, 1929 the stock market crashed, possibly because of President Calvin Coolidge ’s, tax cuts prompting the rich to invest. This day came to be known as "Black Tuesday" and was the beginning of the Great Depression. Stocks that were previously selling at thirty dollars a share were only worth pennies. Unemployment was rampant, with one hundred thousand jobs lost weekly for the next three years. By 1932 twelve million people were out of work. During the time of the Great Depression, Oklahoma went through a severe drought. Many people from Oklahoma headed to California hoping for an improvement, but they found only low wages and horrendous working conditions. John Steinbeck’s novel The Grapes Of Wrath and many songs by Woodie Guthrie describe the disappointments of these people.

"The way chosen by the United States was plainly marked by a few clear precepts, which govern its conduct in world affairs. First: no people on earth can be held, as a people, to be an enemy, for all humanity shares the common hunger for peace and fellowship and justice. Second: no nation's security and well-being can be lastingly achieved in isolation but only in effective cooperation with fellow-nations. Third: any nation's right to a form of government and an economic system of its own choosing is inalienable. Fourth: any nation's attempt to dictate other nations their form of government is indefensible. And fifth: a nation's hope of lasting peace cannot be firmly based upon any race in armaments but rather upon just relations and honest understanding with all other nations.
