Dwight D. Eisenhower Bringing to the Presidency his prestige as commanding general of the victorious forces in Europe during World War II, Dwight D. Eisenhower obtained a truce in Korea and worked incessantly during his two terms to ease the tensions of the Cold War. He pursued the moderate policies of "Modern Republicanism," pointing out as he left office, "America is today the strongest, most influential, and most productive nation in the world." Born in Texas in 1890, brought up in Abilene, Kansas, Eisenhower was the third of seven sons. He excelled in sports in high school, and received an appointment to West Point. Stationed in Texas as a second lieutenant, he met Mamie Geneva Doud, whom he married in 1916. In his early Army career, he excelled in staff assignments, serving under Generals John J. Pershing, Douglas MacArthur, and Walter Krueger. After Pearl Harbor, General George C. Marshall called him to Washington for a war plans assignment. He commanded the Allied Forces landing in North Africa in November 1942; on D-Day, 1944, he was Supreme Commander of the troops invading France.

Reagan Presidential Library. The Eisenhower Presidential Center in Abilene, Kansas commemorates the spirit of the Allied Expeditionary Forces of World War II, as well as the administration of the 34th President of the United States. The Eisenhower family home is at the center of the complex. This simple frame structure is typical of the late 19th century Kansas family dwellings. The Museum, built of native limestone, depicts President Eisenhower's life and career from his early childhood through his two terms in office as Chief Executive. Five major galleries include exhibits ranging from presidential gifts from the world's heads of state to highlights of Mamie Eisenhower as First Lady to the simple artifacts of everyday life.

Public Papers of the Presidents, Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1960, p. 1035- 1040 My fellow Americans: Three days from now, after half a century in the service of our country, I shall lay down the responsibilities of office as, in traditional and solemn ceremony, the authority of the Presidency is vested in my successor. This evening I come to you with a message of leave-taking and farewell, and to share a few final thoughts with you, my countrymen. Like every other citizen, I wish the new President, and all who will labor with him, Godspeed. I pray that the coming years will be blessed with peace and prosperity for all. Our people expect their President and the Congress to find essential agreement on issues of great moment, the wise resolution of which will better shape the future of the Nation. My own relations with the Congress, which began on a remote and tenuous basis when, long ago, a member of the Senate appointed me to West Point, have since ranged to the intimate during the war and immediate post-war period, and, finally, to the mutually interdependent during these past eight years. In this final relationship, the Congress and the Administration have, on most vital issues, cooperated well, to serve the national good rather than mere partisanship, and so have assured that the business of the Nation should go forward. So, my official relationship with the Congress ends in a feeling, on my part, of gratitude that we have been able to do so much together.

    Longevity of U.S. Presidents
    Ed Uthman, MD
    Diplomate, American Board of Pathology
Last updated 2 Sep 2000 Everyone knows that the average life span of humans has increased markedly in the 20th century, but has it increased for everyone? An informal study of U.S. presidents may yield some surprising answers. My aim is to look at the effect of medical advances over the last two centuries on the longevity of those who are most likely to have access to those advances. I think presidents make an interesting (if small) sample because of their demographic uniformity: all are white male politicians, almost all are military veterans, and presumably all had sufficient wealth and/or prestige to command whatever medical resources were available in their later years. Of the 41 men who have held the office, 5 are still alive (Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton), 4 were victims of homicide, all from gunfire (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy)*, and 32 died of natural causes (4 while in office: Harrison, Taylor, Harding, FD Roosevelt). These 32 are listed below by date of death. The "ordinal" figure is the order in which each served as president, Cleveland having served two non-consecutive terms. NAME ORD-

Eisenhower went to school in Abilene, Kansas, and then worked to help a brother through college. He took the Naval Academy exam, placing first, and the West Point exam, placing second, but entered West Point because he was too old for the Naval Academy. During World War II he served as commander of all U. S. forces in Europe. His Presidency: Eisenhower enforced racial integration of public schools and pushed through programs for the completion of the St. Lawrence Seaway and expansion of the Interstate Highway System. During both his terms he took many measures to protect the world from Communism and was well loved by people at home and abroad.

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER U.S. President and Five-Star General Name at birth: David Dwight Eisenhower Eisenhower was the most famous U.S. Army general of World War II. A career Army man, he rose to the level of 5-star general and oversaw the Allied forces in Europe, including the famous D-Day invasion of France in 1944. After the war he served briefly as president of Columbia University, then was chosen over Robert A. Taft as the Republican candidate for U.S. president in 1952. He won handily in 1952 and again in 1956, defeating Democratic candidate Adlai Stevenson both times. Ike survived a half-dozen heart attacks over 15 years before succumbing in 1969.
Extra credit : Eisenhower was succeeded by John F. Kennedy , who defeated Eisenhower's vice president, Richard Nixon , in the elections of 1960... Eisenhower was a four-pack-a-day smoker until he quit cold turkey in 1949... Like his contemporary Winston Churchill , Ike was an amateur oil painter... When he ran for president in 1952 he resigned from the army, forfeiting an annual pension of nearly $20,000... Eisenhower was baptized and became a member of the National Presbyterian Church shortly after he was inaugurated in 1953.

Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th U.S. president Gives first speech bounced off a satellite "This is one more significant step in the United States' program of space research and exploration." (August 12, 1960) On August 12, 1960, Echo 1, the world's first passive communications satellite, was successfully launched into orbit by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). After entering an orbit at an altitude of about 1,000 miles, the satellite inflated an aluminum-coated Mylar balloon designed to reflect radio waves back to earth. Unlike modern communication satellites, Echo was passive, meaning it could only reflect radio signalsnot actively receive, amplify, or transit them. Nevertheless, Echo was a major achievement for NASA, and on the day of its launching, a special recorded message from President Dwight Eisenhower was bounced off the satellite and picked up by radio operators across the nation.
