History
The Eiffel programming language was created by Bertrand Meyer and developed by his company, Interactive Software Engineering (ISE) of Goleta, CA in 1985. Eiffel has evolved continually since its conception on September 14, 1985 and its first introduction in 1986. Eiffel is named after Gustave Eiffel, the engineer who designed the Eiffel Tower. The developers of Eiffel like to compare themselves to the well-built structure of the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower was completed on time and within budget, which should happen if you use Eiffel for your software projects.
Significant Language Features
There are several significant language features of Eiffel:
  • Portable - this language is available for major industry platforms, such as Windows, OS/2, Linux, UNIX, VMS, etc...
  • Open System - includes a C and C++ interface making it easily possible to reuse code previously written.
  • "Melting Ice Technology" - combines compilation, for the generation of efficient code, with bytecode interpretation, for fast turnaround after a change.

Introduction
Welcome to the Eiffel Class Struggle 2003, the International Eiffel Programming Contest. On this page you should find all the information necessary to submit an entry. As all Eiffel vendors have a free version of their tools, you can use the tool that suits you. The closing date is 31 October 2003. Entries received on or after 1 November 2003 0:00 GMT have to be rejected. You can compete in several areas. For example in innovation, portability, or readability. See the judging rules for how entries are judged. Much success!
Rules for the Eiffel Class Struggle 2003
Overview of the rules:
  • To enter, submit an Eiffel application or library. Any individual or organization may participate, except Berend de Boer. Entries can compete anonymously. Judges will not get the name of the author of the library or application. If the author's name is in the indexing clause of every class, their entry is not anonymous and no effort will be made to make it anonymous. It is therefore up to the contestant to enter an anonymous entry. Judges may participate, but only anonymously. It is up to the judges to submit an entirely anonymous library or application. For example, it should not contain an indexing clause with the name of the author, nor should it be an library or application that is already well-known. If Berend de Boer considers an entry submitted by a judge not anonymous enough, it will not compete.

    Why Should We Be Concerned?
One lesson I learned from this is that professions can afford to be far more self-critical. It seems that doctors are very willing to submit patients to procedures that they themselves might be reluctant to undergo. Many medical practices are inherently dangerous, and yet research is very slow to investigate alternatives. Many medical practices are based around fixing problems after they have happened rather than assessing a patient's whole lifestyle to effect... Eiffel Programming Language
Overview : Eiffel is an advanced object-oriented programming language created in 1985 by Bertrand Meyer. It was named after Gustave Eiffel, the design engineer who designed the Eiffel Tower. It is an advanced object-oriented programming language emphasizing the design and development of quality and reusable software. Unlike C++, this language is not based on or an extension to any other Language. Eiffel is not a superset or extension of any other language. It restricts dangerous practices from previous generation languages although it does interface to other languages such as C and C++. Eiffel encourages the concept of "Design by Contract" to improve software correctness. Eiffel is an object-oriented language based on a number of concepts:
    • Multiple inheritance including redefinition, undefinition, renaming, selection

    • The Eiffel Tower The Eiffel Tower is the most recognizable landmark in Paris and is known worldwide as a symbol of France. Named after its designer, Gustave Eiffel, it is a premier tourist destination, with over 5.5 million visitors per year.
      Background
The structure was built from 1887-1889 as the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle (1889), a World's fair marking the centennial celebration of the French revolution. It was inaugurated on March 31, 1889, and opened on May 6. 300 steel workers joined together 18,038 pieces of cast iron, using two and a half million rivets. Considering the safety standards in place at the time, it is remarkable that only one worker died in the construction of the tower (during the installation of Otis Elevator's lifts).

    • Gustave Eiffel Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (December 15, 1832 - December 27, 1923) was a French architect. Born in Dijon, Côte-d'Or, France, he is most famous for building the Eiffel Tower, built from 1887-1889 for the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris, France. It is less well known that he designed the armature for the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, USA, and the hooking mechanism in garter belts. He gained his expertise in construction by designing ironwork for bridges.
