Introduction to Egyptian Sacred Places
Giza Pyramids, Egypt
A comprehensive and accurate picture of the development of Egyptian civilization is not however, as clear as the preceding chronological listing implies. To put it quite bluntly, while the hieroglyphic language of the Egyptians was deciphered by Champollion in 1822 and succeeding generations of archaeologists have done admirable work in excavating, preserving and measuring the monumental architecture of the Egyptians, current Egyptological 'science' knows next to nothing about the origins of Egyptian civilization and the fundamental philosophy that underlaid it. This matter is far to complex to deal with in this essay but a few quotes from Egyptian specialists will alert my readers to the very limited knowledge we have concerning the ancient Egyptian culture and, most particularly, its origins. From the brilliant and self-described 'rogue' Egyptologist John Anthony West, we learn that: "It is not until the very last stages of Egypt, in Macedonian and Ptolomaic times (beginning in 332BC), that anything resembling our form of history exists. Egyptian history, such as it is, has been

The precision with which the pyramid was executed is often the source of marvel and speculation. It is likely that the attention to this precision was related to the many structural problems encountered in previous pyramids. To minimize many of the previous errors, the attention to precision produced a pyramid whose base is level within 2.1 cm (less than 1 inch!), with the only difference in the length of the sides being 4.4 cm (1.75 in). The base covers an area of 13 ½ acres. The blocks used in the pyramid are large, with a commonly stated average of 2.5 tons. Many blocks are indeed smaller than this, the blocks toward the top decrease in size. Some of the casing stones at the base are very large, weighing as much as 15 tons. The heaviest blocks are the granite blocks used to roof the kings chambers and the weight relieving chambers above the king’s chamber. These are estimated to weigh from 50 to 80 tons each!!

These massive stone structures were built around 4500 years ago on a rocky desert plateau close to the Nile. But the intriguing Egyptian pyramids were more than just tombs for kings. The mysteries surrounding their symbolism, design and purpose have inspired passionate debate. It is likely that many of these mysteries will never be solved... The rise and fall of the pyramid era The pyramids epitomize ancient Egypt, yet the biggest were constructed during a short span of time early in a civilization that was to last almost three millennia. The first large Egyptian pyramid was the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, built during the third dynasty of the Old Kingdom to protect the body of the king Djoser who died around 2649 BC. It was this feat that heralded the short age of the gigantic stone pyramids of ancient Egypt. The first large pyramid in Egypt was the Step Pyramid of Djoser. It was built at Saqqara, about 15 kilometers from Giza.

Egypt is home to the most famous pyramids of all, three well-formed examples located at Giza on the outskirts of Cairo.  Just as there are pyramids throughout the world, it should come as no surprise that Egypt has more than just these three.  Egyptologists have actually catalogued over 90 major pyramids that were built over the course of 1,000 years (roughly 2600-1550 BC). All the pyramids can be found close to the west bank (none on the east bank) of the Nile, with the majority found along a 17-kilometre stretch incorporating Abu Ghurob, Saqqara and Dashur.  Giza is 11 kilometres further north.  Because of their size and relative proximity, when visiting a site it is quite normal to see other pyramids on the horizon.

History
Contrary to the common belief, only the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), not all three Great Pyramids , is on top of the list of Wonders. The monument was built by the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu of the Fourth Dynasty around the year 2560 BC to serve as a tomb when he dies. The tradition of pyramid building started in Ancient Egypt as a sophistication of the idea of a mastaba or "platform" covering the royal tomb. Later, several stacked mastabas were used. Early pyramids, such as the Step Pyramid of King Zoser (Djoser) at Saqqara by the famous Egyptian architect, Imhotep, illustrate this connection.

Who built the Egyptian pyramids? I can remember standing in the desert near Cairo and gazing across the Sphinx to the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the most impressive structures on Earth, and counting myself extremely fortunate to be there. The pyramid carries some impressive statistics. It stands 450 feet tall (137mtrs) and consists of two million blocks of stone, weighing from the most common at 2 5 tons up to 50 tons. The weight of the pyramid is six million tons. The four corners are almost perfect right angles and align almost exactly to the four points of the compass. The sides slope at a perfect 52 degrees, or would do had not the smoothly polished limestone finishing blocks been removed and used in building works in Cairo. It is one one of the original Seven Wonders of the World. Impressive though the statistics are, they do not reveal the true magnificence of this wonderful construction. I have to admit that upon entering the pyramid and climbing up the narrow cramped access shaft to the upper burial chamber, which was surprisingly cool, I experienced an eerie feeling of stepping back into history, and a strong feeling of trespassing. To have seen this pyramid when perfectly smooth and dazzlingly white in the desert sun must have been an incredible sight.

My son and his wife, both professors, spent several months this spring in Rome, Italy. My daughter-in-law, a classicist, wanted to take the opportunity to visit Egypt. Their son and I were lucky enough to go too. We began our trip at the beginning of April, 2001
My friends Ruth and Fritz Saenger put us in touch with their granddaughter Katherine, who was visiting her husband Don Sparks in Egypt. By e-mail Katherine introduced us to Presidential Nile Cruises. PROFESSIONS
In Ancient Egypt there were definite social classes which were dictated by an egyptian's profession. This social stratification is like a pyramid. At the bottom of the "Social Pyramid" were soldiers, farmers, and tomb builders, who represented the greatest percent of the Egyptian population. The workers supported the professionals above them, just as the base of the pyramid supports the rest of the structure. Above the workers were skilled craftsmen, such as artists, who used primitive tools to make everything from carts to coffins.
Above the craftsmen were the scribes. The scribes were the only Egyptians who knew how to read and write, and therefore had many types of job opportunity. A scribe's duties ranged from writing letters for townspeople, to recording harvests, to keeping accounts for the Egyptian army. Above these scribes were more scholarly scribes, who had advanced to higher positions such as priests, doctors, and engineers. Priests were devoted to their religious duties in the temples at least three months out of every year, during which time they never left the temple. At other times the worked as judges and teachers.
The medical profession of Ancient Egypt had its own hierarchy. At the top was the chief medical officer of Egypt. Under him were the superintendents and inspectors of physicians, and beneath then were the physicians. Egyptian doctors were very advanced in their knowledge of herbal remedies and surgical techniques. Also part of Egyptian medicine were magic, charms, and spells, which had only psychological effects, if any, on a patient.

Egypt's Pyramids
Who Built The Pyramids? How Were They Built?
The process of building a pyramid is not an easy undertaking! Over a span of 20 years, granite and limestone rocks were cut from quarries nearby and floated down the Nile to the site, and the base was cleared down to the bedrock and construction was to begin. There are a few theories concerning how the pyramids were actually built. One is that there was a spiral ramp that went around the pyramid as it increased in size. This ramp would have been greased with water and mud to allow the workers to pull or push massive stones which may have been place on long wooden sledges. Another theory is that the stones were put in place by using a lever and pulley system.
The men that worked on the pyramids are not believed to be Egyptian slaves. They actually were farmers that were hired (against their will) to work for the Pharaoh during the flood season. The Nile floods onto the land through the months of July to October, irrigating the lands, but rendering the farmers without anything to do. These workers were not horribly treated either. Ancient records show that they were paid workers that received decent wages, holidays off, and were only allowed (under regulation) to work a maximum amount of hours per day. A smaller team of men probably remained working on the pyramid year round, and then the team increased in size during the flood season.

It has generally been accepted that the pyramids were built as magnificent mausoleums by thousands of workers under pharaohs’ orders. However, many other less conventional construction theories have been put forward over the years, suggestions that the pyramids were built by angels, devils or aliens.

T he Smithsonian Institution does not have a specialist in the study of ancient Egypt and our collection of artifacts in this area is relatively small. However, our staff in the Department of Anthropology receive many inquiries concerning the pyramids and have prepared the following text and bibliography to answer some fundamental questions. The pyramids of Egypt fascinated travellers and conquerors in ancient times and continue to inspire wonder in the tourists, mathematicians, and archaeologists who visit, explore, measure and describe them. Tombs of early Egyptian kings were bench-shaped mounds called mastabas. Around 2780 B.C., King Djoser's architect, Imhotep, built the first pyramid by placing six mastabas, each smaller than the one beneath, in a stack to form a pyramid rising in steps. This Step Pyramid stands on the west bank of the Nile River at Sakkara near Memphis. Like later pyramids, it contains various rooms and passages, including the burial chamber of the king. The transition from the Step Pyramid to a true, smooth-sided pyramid took placed during the reign of King Snefru, founder of the Fourth Dynasty (2680-2560 B.C.). At Medum, a step pyramid was built, then filled in with stone, and covered with a limestone casing. Nearby at Bahshur, construction was begun on a pyramid apparently planned to have smooth sides. About halfway up, however, the angle of incline decreases from over 5l degrees to about 43 degrees, and the sides rise less steeply, causing it to be known as the Bent Pyramid. The change in angle was probably made during construction to give the building more stability. Another great pyramid was built at Dahshur with its sides rising at an angle of somewhat over 43 degrees, resulting in a true, but squat looking pyramid.

After the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza , the Red Pyramid at Dashur has the largest base (only slightly smaller then Khufu's pyramid, each side measures 722 feet) of any pyramid in Egypt. However, with it's sides sloping at 43 degrees 22', it is substantially shorter at 343 feet (104 meters). It is the fourth highest pyramid ever built in Egypt, with almost 160 layers of stone. Significantly, the Red Pyramid was the first successful, true, cased Pyramid built in Egypt, ushering in the era of the Giza style pyramids. Built by Khufu's father, Snefru , what really makes this pyramid special today is the lack of crowds and circus atmosphere that plagues the Giza Plateau, along with the fact that it can currently be entered without limitation. Not long ago, the area of Dashur could not be visited, which probably explains why such an important monument receives so few visitors. However, it is only a short drive from Saqqara , and only a brief drive from Cairo The pyramid gets its common name from the reddish limestone used to build most of its core, but it is also sometimes referred to as the Shining or Northern Pyramid. Learning from prior mistakes, several layers of fine white limestone were used to lay the pyramid's foundation thus eliminating structural problems of earlier pyramids.

Succession of kingdoms located to the northern part of the Nile, within the boundaries of modern Egypt, lasting from about 3100 BCE until 30 BCE. While the kingdoms at times were ruled by kings of foreign origin, the culture and religion of Ancient Egypt represented mainly a continuation and development from the same sources. The name used by the Egyptians themselves was Kemet , "Dark Land", pointing at the dark and fertile soil along the Nile river. Similar to modern Egypt, the Nile was the single source of water for Ancient Egypt, allowing abundant harvests 3 times a year. This provided for the necessary surplus for the development of trade, the establishment of urban centres, the emergence of powerful political leadership, of inventions and the production of crafts as well as advanced religious activities. The natural framework of Ancient Egypt was quite similar to modern Egypt. People lived on the fertile river beds, and the desert rising up from the green areas on either sides was empty. One difference is however central, the annual floodings, starting in July and lasting in September. Today the level of water in the Nile is controlled by the

The Pyramids of Egypt, built at Giza during the 4th Dynasty (circa 2680-c. 2544 BC) are the oldest of the seven wonders and the only ones remaining intact today (see Pyramids). The Great Pyramid of Khufu (circa 2600 BC) was the greatest of the Egyptian pyramids, which served as burial places of the pharaohs, particularly during the Old Kingdom. Some lists included all of the pyramids and the Sphinx as well. The great pyramids of Giza were built around 2700-2500 BC as tombs for the pharoahs (rulers of ancient Egypt, who held the status of gods on earth). The Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops to the Greeks) is the largest, pictured here in the center of the photograph, it covers 13 acres. It was constructed of around 2.3 million stones and each of the stones weigh from 2 to 30 tons each.
