Help Become an Argonaut Neith: The Great Mother ... By Daniel M. Darcy
(The name Neith in hieroglyphs)
  • Known as the “Great Mother” of the Egyptians, she was the original goddess of Sais, situated in the Nile delta of lower Egypt.
  • A goddess of war who was believed to march into battle ahead of the soldiers.
  • Her symbol is a shield with crossed arrows (see hieroglyphs above).
  • Said to be the mother of Sebek, the crocodile god, she was also said to have created the serpent Apep by spitting into Nun, the watery abyss.
  • She was also recognized as the “mother of the home”, and eventually came to be the mother of all the gods, and in particular the famous Ra.
  • Neith also became the protectress of the dead, and was sometimes depicted offering them food and drink on their arrival to the underworld. Perhaps most interesting about Neith is her similarity to the Greek Athena and especially Hera. In their respective pantheons, female attribution to warrior-like qualities juxtaposed with motherly aspects and the hearth are common. Neith, however, is also related to death and the underworld, making her likeness more pervasive and diverse than her Greek counterparts. Sources: "Neith." Encyclopedia Mythica.

    Egyptian mythology
Egyptian mythology (or Egyptian religion ) is the name for the succession of beliefs held by the people of Egypt until the coming of Christianity and Islam The timespan involved is nearly three thousand years, and beliefs varied considerably over time, so an article or, indeed, even one whole book, cannot do more than outline the many entities and subjects in this complex system of beliefs. Egyptian Mythology is different from Greek or Roman Mythology , in that in Egyptian Mythology most deities are of human body and animal head or vice versa. Egyptians believed they had the right to an afterlife . Egyptians believed for the soul to survive death , the body had to be preserved. Therefore, embalming and mummification was practiced. The weighing the heart occurred before proceeding to either the afterlife or the devourer. Main article Mummification Since preservation of the body was instrumental in keeping the Ka and Ba souls embalming was developed by the Egyptians around the 4th Dynasty. Egyptians would conduct the mummification process. All soft tissues like the brain and internal organs were removed. The cavities were washed and then packed with natron, and the body buried in a pile of natron. The

Ancient Egyptian Myths and Legends > Customer Review #1: Great Souce of Egyptian Mythology Information

Ancient Egyptian Myths and Legends is the best collection of Egyptian myths Ive found anywhere. Every aspect of Egyptian gods and dieties was mentioned in full detail. You have a question, I promise it will answer. Definitely a book to add to your shopping cart if you love Egyptian myth
Ancient Egyptian Myths and Legends > Customer Review #2: A well-written comprehensive study. The details this book gives are extraordinary and the accompanying plates and illustrations are wonderful, though on occasion their quality is waning. I particularily found fascinating the study of the five parts of the being and their capabilities when the body containing them was alive or deceased. The influence of dreams is also looked at, albeit briefly. My only real complaint might be that since it was written in the early twentieth century, Pharaoh names and place-names are rendered differently, which is a bit odd, and the authors habit of referring to the ancient Egyptians as savage and primitive gets a bit annoying. I realize that this is only a reflection of the attitude of his day, and thus I will not hold such against Mr. Spence as the rest of the work more than makes up for these blemishes of preference.

Egyptian DEITIES AND THEIR mythology ANUBIS or ANPU In Egyptian mythology, a God of the dead, portrayed as a man with the head of a jackal. Originally a Deity of UPPER EGYPT, his cult was subsumed into that of Osiris (whose origins were in the DELTA). During the Middle Kingdom he shared with Osiris the title of Prince of the West (i.e. the place where the dead were or Underworld). BAST or BASTET In Egyptian mythology, a CAT-headed Goddess, guardian of the DELTA area, with her centre of cult at BUBASTIS. HATHOR In Egyptian mythology, a major Goddess, the Lady of Heaven, Earth and the Underworld, worshipped throughout Egypt and indeed beyond as far as Syria. Portrayed as a cow or as a woman with the horned head of a cow, she was perceived as a helpful gentle Deity. With women especially under her protection in pregnancy and during births. She was a supreme Goddess, as her relationship with Horus indicates. She was his wet-nurse and later his wife. Her cult was centred at DENDREA IN UPPER EGYPT, although there were temples to her throughout the country. The Seven Hathors were the seven Egyptian Fates who presided at birth. HERU / HERUPA or KAUT / KHUTI In Egyptian mythology, a Mother Goddess who was represented as a woman with a fish on her head. She was displaced by ISIS.

Egyptian Myths > Customer Review #1: not what I expected

In buying this book I was hoping to get an idea of the stories in Egyptian mythology since I knew little about it. I was disappointed however because the author spends too much time in my opinion on the origins for learning the myths rather than the actualy stories. He goes into great detail describing the temples and shrines that the actual glyphs were found in. He even goes to the lengths of telling what museum some of these artifacts can be found in. While this is also an interesting subject, in buying a book entitled Egyptian Myths I was really hoping just to learn what they were.

    A word of caution
This site is based on what is considered more or less orthodox chronology, which of course means that there are other, deviant chronologies. On the whole I prefer the plodding examination of facts however few and poorly understood to the flights of fancy of some of the alternative historians. Chances are it gets us a bit closer to the truth, which, unless timetravel is invented, we will never know.

In ancient times each Egyptian city or region had its own god and worshipped many others. Read on to learn a few general things about ancient Egyptian religious beliefs. Who did they worship? . . . The ancient Egyptians worshipped many gods. Sometimes it's hard for us to tell who was who! These gods and goddesses often represented the natural world, for example the sky, earth, wind, or sun. They took the form of animals or combined animal and human forms.
Official religion . . . From ancient Egyptian writings we know that religion was very important in their society. The pharaoh performed rituals to the gods so that the world would be in harmony and to assure bountiful crops. These official state ceremonies were performed in temples throughout Egypt, but most Egyptians did not participate. Religion everyday . . . Popular religion took other forms. People used magical charms or amulets to ward off danger. They also worshipped popular gods and goddesses to help them with life events such as childbirth.

    by Donald Mackenzie
This highly readable book covers Egyptian religion, history, and culture through its entire civilization. We are accustomed to history measured in decades or centuries. Egypt requires thinking in terms of millenia. There was not one monolithic Egyptian belief system; it went through profound changes over time; this book describes this evolution in great detail. Mackenzie includes many extracts from religious texts, folk tales, and historical documents. Title Page
