Egyptian Mythology
Mythology is defined as a collection of interrelated stories of a given culture. Myths tend to describe the creation of the world and give a culture an understanding of the events of nature and the world around them. Myths are also generated to tell the story of the first people to inhabit the earth. These people are elevated to gods and goddesses, which usually associate them as having supernatural and special powers. Myths also express the values or beliefs of a culture, and every culture studied has their own myths distinctive to their group. Ancient Egyptians tried to understand their place in the universe and their mythology centers itself on nature, the earth, sky, moon, sun, stars, and the Nile River. Heliopolis, the City of the Sun, is located in the ruins of Yunu in northeast Cairo. This is where the cosmic creation of Egyptian myth began. Ancient Egyptian mythology states that in the beginning of time everything began with Nu. Nu is the description of what the planet was before land appeared. Nu was a vast area of swirling watery chaos and as the floods receded the land appeared. The first god to appear out of this watery mess was Atum. This myth was probably created because of the large source of water from the Nile River. In one interpretation, Atum is credited with the fertile land that springs up when the water's of the Nile River recedes, because he was the first to arise out of the watery mess. The sun god Atum travels along Nut during the day and then is swallowed by Nut at night. At dawn it is seen as Nut giving birth to Atum as the sky opens up to the light.

Tome of Egyptian Mythology Sorry, but your browser does not have the plug-in to play this midi. Table of Contents Ra (aka Re) Atum Shu and Tefnut Anhur ... Back to Text List By: Linda Ann Ingram Write us at: raven@qnet.com Ra (aka Re) Ra was the Egyptian sun god and his cult was located in Heliopolis. He was worshiped as the creator and ruler of the world. From times of old, the pharohs revered Ra and often associated themselves with him, thus calling themselves the sons of Ra and assumed all the powers of Ra. It was thought that Ra himself sired each pharaoh, and thus he became known as the god of the living, while Osiris was the god of the dead. Various tales have stated different origins of Ra. One claims he came from the bosom of Nun (the primordial ocean), another states he rose from an egg, and the third states he rose from a lotus flower that lifted its head from the ocean. Ra governed his land from a princely palace and each morning he would set out in his boat with his scribe and visit the twelve provinces of his kingdom and spending an hour in each one. This came to symbolize the the sun's passage in the sky. Ra took different guises at different times of the day. At night he was Atum, a human that wore a double crown. At dawn, he was Khepri, the sacred beetle, and at noon he was Ra, a man with the head of a falcon. Some believed that every morning, he was born again as a child and grew during the day into a man. Then in the evening, he would age and die.

Scarabs
Representing the God Khepri at dawn, Scarabs symbolised rebirth and resurrection after death in Ancient Egypt. Khepri was believed to renew the sun each day and roll it across the sky. Scarabs were worn as amulets by the living, often with the cartouches of gods engraved on the undersides to enhance their magic powers.
Eye of Horus
The Eye of Horus represents a human eye with the cheek markings of a falcon. Horus, represented as the falcon-headed god, was an important god in Egyptian legend. Horus' left eye, signifying the moon, was wounded in a battle with Set (hence the moon phases). The eye was healed by the god Thoth, and the restored eye, known as the "udjat", became a powerful amulet used to protect from evil.
Queen Nefertiti
The beautiful Queen Nefertiti was wife of the monotheistic Pharaoh Akenaten and made famous by the discovery of her bust in a sculptor's workshop. Nefertiti is one of the best known icons of Ancient Egypt.
Ankhs
A potent symbol in Egyptian Art, the Ankh as hieroglypic sign means "life" but is also associated with the hieroglyph for magical protection, Sa, as well as forming part of the words for "health" and "happiness".

People have always tried to understand why certain things happen. For example, they have wanted to know why the sun rises and sets and what causes lightning. They have also wanted to know how the earth was created and how and where humanity first appeared. Today, people have scientific answers and theories for many such questions about the world around them. But in earlier timesand in some parts of the world todaypeople lacked the knowledge to provide scientific answers. They therefore explained natural events in terms of stories about gods, goddesses, and heroes. Such stories are known as myths, and the study of myths is called mythology. In early times, every society developed its own myths, which played an important part in the society's religious life. This religious significance has always separated myths from similar stories, such as folk tales and legends. The people of a society may tell folk tales and legends for amusement, without believing them. But they usually consider their myths sacred and completely true. Osiris, Anubis, and Horus

Egyptian mythology
Egyptian mythology (or Egyptian religion ) is the name for the succession of beliefs held by the people of Egypt until the coming of Christianity and Islam . The timespan involved is nearly three thousand years, and beliefs varied considerably over time, so an article or, indeed, even one whole book, cannot do more than outline the many entities and subjects in this complex system of beliefs. Egyptian Mythology is different from Greek or Roman Mythology , in that in Egyptian Mythology most deities are of human body and animal head or vice versa. Table of contents 1 The Articles

Egyptian Mythology
From: http://www.touregypt.net/gods1.htm The creator of all things was either Re, Amun, Ptah, Khnum or Aten, depending on which version of the myth was currently in use. The heavens were represented by Hathor, Bat, and Horus. Osiris was an earth god as was Ptah. The annual flooding of the Nile was Hapi. Storms, evil and confusion were Seth. His counterpart was Ma'at, who represented balance, justice and truth. The moon was Thoth and Khonsu. Re, the sun god, took on many forms, and transcended most of the borders that contained the other gods. The actual shape of the sun, the disk (or, aten), was deified into another god, Aten. As stated earlier, certain gods were worshipped in different areas. Local cities or villages, known as nomes, often had unique gods that were known only to that region. On occasion, these gods attained country -wide recognition and became the myths and legends that were passed on from century to century. Below is a listing of the main gods and their primary place of worship.

Egyptian Mythology (Charles H.Long )
From: http://nefertiti.iwebland.com/egyptian_mythology.htm From time immemorial Egypt has been known as the country of two lands: The desertlike Upper Egypt, or the Red Land, and Lower Egypt, or the Black Land, where the soil is fertile. Even today 99 percent of the Egyptian population live in the Black Land. The significance of this duality is more than a geographical and demographic fact; it is a basic element in the very beginnings of the culture of the ancient Egyptians and finds significant expression in their religion and myths. The Memphite theology takes over older local notions of creation, such as that of Hermopolis, which describes creation proceeding from eight primordial beings of chaos who inhabited the primeval slime. The four males are toads, and the four females snakes, forming the pairs of Nun and Naunet (primordial matter and primordial space); Kuk and Kauket (the illimitable and the boundless); Huh and Hauhet (darkness and obscurity); Amon and Amaunet (hidden and concealed ones). These eight bring forth the sun, and in the Memphite theology they are said to come forth from Ptah himself.
