He (or sometimes she) could tell anybody what to do, and they would have to do it. This is called a monarchy . Of course the Pharaoh could not always be telling everybody what to do. So the Pharaoh chose men to represent him, and assigned them to big estates all over Egypt. These aristocrats ran the estates, and on them they could tell everybody what to do. But even the aristocrats were supposed to do whatever the Pharaoh said to do, and they had to send him some of the food that was grown on that land. Some, at least, of these estate-holders were priests, holding the estate for the gods , but these religious estates were run in the same way, and they also had to pay some food to the Pharaoh.

President Nasser enjoyed immense prestige throughout the Arab world and beyond. Internally, he was regarded as the founder of modern Egypt.
Egypt reoccupied Sharm esh-Sheikh, on the Sinai Peninsula, and closed the Straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping; This provoked the 'Six-Day War' of June 1967, when Israel quickly defeated neighbouring Arab states, including Egypt.
The war left Israel in control of the Gaza Strip and a large area of Egyptian territory, including the whole of the Sinai Peninsula. The Suez Canal was blocked, and remained closed until June 1975.
President Nasser died suddenly in September 1970, and was succeeded by Col Anwar Sadat, hitherto the Vice-President. In September 1971 the UAR was renamed the Arab Republic of Egypt, and a new Constitution took effect.
The Federation of Arab Republics (Egypt, Libya and Syria) was founded in 1972, but proved to be ineffective.
In 1976 Egypt terminated its Treaty of Friendship with the USSR. Relations with the USA, however, became closer, as President Sadat came to rely increasingly on US aid.
In foreign affairs, a division in the Arab world between a "moderate" grouping (including Jordan, Iraq and the Gulf States), which viewed the participation of Egypt as indispensable to any diplomatic activities for solving the problems of the region, and a "radical" grouping, led by Syria, became increasingly evident.

Contact: Daniel McGlinchey 202.225.5931 Today Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) released a letter to the Egyptian embassy in Washington, D.C. forcefully declining an invitation to attend a dinner discussion sponsored by the Egyptian government to increase cross-cultural understanding with members of Congress. In his letter to the Minister for Political and Congressional Affairs at the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Frank criticizes Egypt’s harsh treatment of gays, and states "Indeed, I would feel it a betrayal of men very much like me who have recently been brutally arrested and imprisoned by your government for no reason other than the way in which they chose to express affection to other human beings in a mutually consenting relationship. Enjoying the hospitality of those who have so harshly mistreated people because of a basic characteristic of personality which they share with me is not something I wish to do." Last year, 52 men were arrested in Cairo, Egypt on suspicion of engaging in consensual homosexual behavior, and 23 of these men were sentenced to hard labor prison terms of between one and five years. The government of Egypt continues to arrest and persecute men suspected of being gay.

Human Rights Watch: Egyptian Government Arresting, Torturing Gay Men
Associated Press , March 1, 2004 By Nadia Abou El-Magd, Associated Press Writer CAIRO, Egypt— Egyptian authorities have entrapped, arrested and tortured hundreds of men thought to be gay, a New York-based human rights group said in a report Monday. Human Rights Watch urged Egypt to repeal legislation allowing the prosecution of consensual homosexual relations—covered under the country’s debauchery laws. The report said police agents surf the Internet and answer personal ads placed by men seeking men, then arrange meetings with them and arrest them. Gen. Ahmed Shehab, who oversees Internet-related crimes for the Interior Ministry, said he had not yet seen the report and was unable to comment on it. However, vice officials in the past have acknowledged the practice of answering Internet personals by gay men and praised it for getting results. At a news conference, Human Rights Watch and Egyptian rights groups accused the government of ignoring its own declarations to the United Nations and the European Union that homosexuality is legal in Egypt. “The police at Abideen police station (in Cairo) clearly have a different opinion because they are going out and they are arresting men who are doing nothing, who are accused of nothing, but consensual, private, homosexual conduct.” said Scott Long, HRW’s director for homosexual issues.

VOL. XLV No 31 5-August-2002 EGYPT Egyptian Government Forecasts Hefty Jump In Deficit For 2002-03 Budget The Egyptian budget for the year 2002-03 (beginning 1 July) forecasts a hefty jump in the deficit as increases in revenue fail to keep pace with government expenditure. The net final deficit according to projections in the Official Gazette published on 13 June will reach E£9.9bn ($1=E£4.51), up 426% from E£1.9bn in the previous year (See Table). The budget foresees a 121.9% climb in the total deficit to E£17.4bn, with expenditure up 12.7% to E£143bn, while revenue increases only 7.1% to E£125.6bn. Prime Minister Atef Obeid has said that Egypt is committed to keeping its budget deficit at around 4% of GDP, which is currently at about $100bn. However, expressing little confidence in the numbers, economists believe that the government figures are seriously underestimating the deficit and suggest that it is more likely to total 6-7% of GDP in 2002-03. The 2001-02 budget had forecast a deficit of 2.6% of GDP and while closed accounts are not yet available some analysts expect the deficit to be much higher after the slump in tourist income which followed the 11 September attacks on the US . According to Credit Suisse First Boston analyst Tatiana Morozova , the 2001-02 deficit will tally 3.2% of GDP, exploding from the 0.1% seen in 1998-99.

    Esmat Salaheddin
A Muslim militant group has accused the Egyptian government of killing an Islamist preacher in Yemen last week and warned it will avenge his death. The Sons of the Islamic Movement in Exile, a little-known group, said in a statement faxed to Reuters on 27 July that the death of Sheikh Mohammed Salah Abdel Mottaleb was a turning point in their struggle to topple the government. "We warn this impudent government that has carried out this cowardly crime, that Muslim youths abroad will not stay idle. "Muslim youths are looking forward to drinking your blood... We swear we will make you suffer the same fate, destroying your buildings, turning your wives into widows and your children into orphans," the statement said. Egyptian newspapers reported Abdel Mottaleb was stabbed and shot to death outside a mosque in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on 22 July. The papers quoted Egypt's ambassador in Sanaa as saying that a Syrian national had killed the cleric. Egypt has charged Yemen and Sudan with harboring Muslim militants opposed to President Hosni Mubarak's government.

CAIRO, EGYPT - FEBRUARY 24, 2004 An extraordinary partnership between the Egyptian government and IBM has created "Eternal Egypt," providing worldwide access to 7,000 years of Egyptian history. Dr. Ahmed Nazif, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, and Hans Ulrich Maerki, General Manager, IBM Europe, Middle East and Africa, held a press conference today to discuss the project. "This partnership has joined one of the world’s oldest civilizations with the latest innovations in IBM technology," Dr. Nazif said. "The outcome represents the richest repository of information and media about Egyptian cultural history available on the Web today." IBM funded the project through a U.S. $2.5 million grant of technology and expertise from its Research and Services teams in the U.S. and Egypt. The Egyptian government contributed a team of experts who developed the rich content of the system. The Eternal Egypt project combines the most important locations, artifacts, people and stories from Egypt’s history into an interactive multimedia experience. Three years in the making, the project has so far produced multimedia animations, 360-degree image sequences, panoramas of important locations, virtual environments, three-dimensional scans, real-time photos from Web cameras and thousands of high resolution images of ancient artifacts that weave together seven millennia of Egyptian culture and civilization.

Anti-Semitic books, including the infamous Protocols of the Elders of Zion , are being published by Egyptian government-owned publishing houses. Anti-Semitic publications, filled with anti-Jewish conspiracy theories are nothing new in the Egyptian marketplace. Making this problem worse, is the official government imprimatur to many of these books. The two books described below were produced by the culture department of Akhbar al-Yom (the publishing house of the newspaper under the same name) which is one of the five publishing houses that are controlled by the government and subject to its censorship. Below are excerpts from two recent publications: Husein 'Abed al-Wahed, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion , Cairo: Akhbar al-Yom, July 2002 In addition to the full text of the Protocols , the book contains four chapters as follows: 1.
