GEOGRAPHY
Physical Size and Borders
Egypt, covering 1,001,449 square kilometers of land, is about the same size as Texas and New Mexico combined. The country's greatest distance from north to south is 1,024 kilometers, and from east to west, 1,240 kilometers. The country is located in northeastern Africa and includes the Sinai Peninsula (also seen as Sinai), which is often considered part of Asia. Egypt's natural boundaries consist of more than 2,900 kilometers of coastline along the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Suez, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Red Sea (see fig. 1 Egypt shares all 1,150 kilometers of the western border with Libya. This border was defined in 1925 under an agreement with Italy, which had colonized Libya. Before and after World War II, the northern border was adjusted, resulting in the return of the village of As Sallum to Egyptian sovereignty. Egypt shares 255 kilometers of its eastern border in Sinai with Israel and 11 kilometers with the Gaza Strip. Egypt is divided into twenty-six governorates (sometimes called provinces), which include four city governorates: Alexandria (Al Iskandariyah), Cairo (Al Qahirah), Port Said (Bur Said) and Suez; the nine governorates of Lower Egypt in the Nile Delta region; the eight governorates of Upper Egypt along the Nile River south from Cairo to Aswan; and the five frontier governorates covering Sinai and the deserts that lie west and east of the Nile. All governorates, except the frontier ones, are in the Nile Delta or along the Nile Valley and Suez Canal.

Egypt borders to Libya in the west, Sudan in the south, the Mediterranean Sea in the north and the Red Sea and Israel in the east. The eastern region is called Sinai. There you can find some mountains, too. Along the coastline there are countless white-sand beaches, some of them developed as tourist resorts, but most of them are still pristine. The climate in Egypt is hot and dry most of the year.
The Egyptian history is tied to the Nile. The fertile banks of the river gave birth to the worlds first nation state and a powerful civilisation that invented writing and erected the first stone monuments. The river has been the source of economic, social, political and religious life since the area was first settled 5000 years ago.

The Valley of the Kings
By Marie Parsons Geography of the Valley
The first king of the New Kingdom, Ahmose of the 18 th Dynasty, built a pyramid-like structure at Abydos , which may or may not have been his original tomb. But all the remaining rulers of the period, except for the so-called Amarna interregnum, had their tombs cut into the rocks of the West Bank at Thebes , specifically at the Valley of the Kings . From Thutmose I in the th Dynasty of the New Kingdom period, all the kings, and occasionally high officials of that period, were buried in the secluded wadi, or dry gully, which today is called Valley of the Kings. The peak known in Arabic as el-Qurn was known in ancient times as dehent , the Horn, and was sacred to the goddesses Hathor and Meretseger , "She who loves Silence." The Valley, known as Biban el-Muluk, "doorway or gateway of the kings," or, the Wadyein , meaning "the two valleys," is actually composed of two separate branches. The main eastern branch, called ta set aat

87. Egypt: Nubian Geography
For purposes of understanding history and geography, Nubia is divided into two great Today,it corresponds to the area of southern egypt and the northern Sudan
http://www.touregypt.net/historicalessays/nubiae1.htm
The Geography of Nubia Geographical Limits The land of ancient Nubia was bounded on the north by the First Cataract of the Nile River, located just south of Elephantine, and on the far south by the Sixth Cataract, located north of modern Khartum. In certain periods, Nubia consisted of various ethnic tribal groups or chiefdoms, while in other periods, it was governed by larger and more politically complex kingdoms.
Nubia was the country that bordered ancient Egypt on the south, and through much of its history was politically dominated by the Egyptian state. However, in those periods from the 1st Dynasty onward (ca. 3050 BC), whenever Egypt was unable to maintain her presence in Nubia (e.g., because of her own internal difficulties), the various Nubian cultures flourished and enjoyed their political and economic independence, often formulating kingdoms of great dynamism that were competitive with the Egyptian state.
Political Frontiers In the Middle Kingdom, Egypt's southernmost border was fixed at Semna, located south of the Second Cataract in an area of narrow gorges and rocky outcroppings, known in Arabic as the Batn el- Hajjar , the "Belly of Stones" (about 68 km. south of the modern Egyptian-Sudanese border). Later in the New Kingdom, Egypt extended her southern border up to the Fourth Cataract, although she exercised military authority further upriver, as far as modern Kurgus

After 500 years as part of the caliphate, Egypt was seized by the Mamluks in 1250 and the Ottoman Turks in 1517. The first close contact with the West occurred in 1798, when French forces under Napoleon occupied the country; they were Expelled in 1801 by combined Ottoman and British troops. In 1805 Muhammad Ali, a common soldier, was appointed pasha of Egypt; under his rule the foundations of the modern state of Egypt were Established. The construction of the Suez Canal (1859–69) put Egypt deeply into debt, and, although nominally still part of the Ottoman Empire, the country was forced to appoint a French-British commission to manage its financial affairs. The British consolidated their control between 1883 and 1907, and during World War I, when Turkey joined the Central Powers, Great Britain declared Egypt a British protectorate, which Effectively persisted for some years after independence in 1923. According to the presently accepted theoretical geoid the degree of longitude is 111,321 m. at the Equator and 95,406 m. at 31° 06’ at sea level. (6/7 111,321-95,418). This is the reason why there is a wavering of 06’ in the Egyptian calculations of latitude. This wavering was related to the fact that the southern limit of Egypt in a narrow sense, the Little Cataract, extends from 24° 06’ N (Philae) to 24° 06’N (Syene). Southern Egypt was calculated as extending 6° of latitude, either from 24° 00’N (Philae) to 30°00’N (point Pi-Hapy) or from 24°06’N to 30°06’N (Apex of Delta). Northern Egypt was conceived as being one additional degree, so that altogether the two Egypts had a length of seven degrees. This is the reason why the Pharaoh wears wears two crowns superimposed on each other, even though the concept of “crown” was associated specifically with Northern Egypt. The column originated as a symbol of Egypt: the shaft represented Southern Egypt and the capital Northern Egypt, which had the shape of a triangle. This is the reason why Vitruvius

    http://www.presidency.gov.eg/html/geography.html
S ituated in the Northeastern corner of Africa, bounded by the Mediterranean Sea from the North and the Red Sea from the East, with the Sinai Peninsula constituting a link to Southwest Asia, Egypt enjoys a unique, strategic location at the crossroads between Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Throughout its history, Egypt has been a country where various cultures met and interacted. Egypt's total area is over one million square kilometers, yet only a narrow strip in the Nile Valley and the Delta is cultivated land. The Nile, which traverses over 1,000 miles within Egypt, from Wadi Halfa in the South to the Mediterranean in the north, divides the country into four broad regions; the Western Desert which occupies almost two-thirds of the total area, the Eastern Desert, the Sinai Peninsula, and the Nile Valley and Delta, which is the most densely populated region of the country. The vast majority of the remaining land is made up of sparsely inhabited, arid desert. Extensive land reclamation efforts since 1947 have aimed at increasing the area of cultivable land. Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is the largest city in Africa, the Arab world and the Middle East. It is also the industrial and commercial center of Egypt. Other major towns include Alexandria, Egypt's chief port, Port Said, Luxor, Aswan, Zagazig and Assiut .
