(Late Bronze Age, 14th century BCE)
after the Amarna Revolution
To the King my lord, my sun, my god, the breath of my life... your slave and dust under your feet. At the feet of the King my lord, my sun, my god, the breath of my life, I bowed down seven times seven times. I heard the words of the tablets of the King my lord, my sun, my god, the breath of my life, and the heat of your slave and the dust under the feet of the King, my lord, my sun, my god, the breath of my life, is exceeding glad that the breath of the King my lord, my sun, my god has gone out to his slave and to the dust under his feet. Who is your servant but a dog? and they prostrate themselves before the Pharaoh Seven times and seven times on both back and belly.
The el-Amarna Tablets
In 1887 about 350 clay tablets were found at el Amarna, the site of Akhenaten's capital Akhetaten. Most of these are now in European Museums (200 in Berlin, 80 in the British Museum and twenty at Oxford). They are written in cuneiform characters in the diplomatic language of the day, Akkadian. Most of the letters are dated to the reigns of Amenhotep III (1402-1364) and Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV, 1350-1334).

Culture minister faces assembly onslaught
Parliamentarians pummelled Culture Minister Farouk Hosni with accusations of mishandling issues like antiquities smuggling and monument restoration. Gamal Essam El-Din reports On Sunday at the People's Assembly, Culture Minister Farouk Hosni found himself being confronted by 43 deputies of differing political inclinations regarding what was alleged to be the increased smuggling of Pharaonic antiquities and the deteriorating conditions of several ancient monuments. When it came to smuggling, Hosni said that although the government gives utmost importance to safeguarding Egyptian antiquities against theft and smuggling, this job is not just the Culture Ministry's responsibility. Other bodies, and especially the interior and foreign ministries, also have important roles, he said. Meanwhile, Hosni detailed his ministry's plans to protect antiquities by both "placing... treasures such as the Pyramids, the Coptic Museum, and the Edfu and Luxor temples under a strict electronic security system", as well as "constructing 23 storehouses aimed at protecting antiquities from smuggling, and keeping them intact". The ambitious plan will cost LE52 million, Hosni said. The ministry is also currently conducting an inventory of every ancient piece in its possession as part of a greater strategy aimed at creating a comprehensive and scientific registry. Seventy-five per cent of the country's antiquities have already been registered, he said.

Culture of peace
As part of a global discourse on the creation of a "peace culture", Mrs Suzanne Mubarak inaugurated the "Peace Matters" lecture series with Ambassador Swanee Hunt. Yasmine El-Rashidi reports Click to view caption Mrs Mubarak said it was time for the world to re-assess the means by which peace was being pursued
When politicians gathered round the table for the July 2000 Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, the world waited anxiously for the results. Women comprised 55 per cent of those following the coverage reflective of their presence in the world. At the negotiating table, however, their voice was nearly absent; the talks, as is well known, failed. Former US President Bill Clinton had one thing to say about that dynamic: "If we'd had women at Camp David," he told the press. "We'd have an agreement." Around the tables in Bosnia, Rwanda, Iraq and Afghanistan, the scenario has been no different the men make the war, and the men negotiate the peace.

HGHJGJHH The Revival of the Ancient Library of Alexandria Alexandria, that charming city, presents to every visitor the fragrance of the past rich in history, civilization and culture. It is the city that has attracted the greatest men of letters in the world. The revival of the Alexandria Library is a huge international project which costs millions of dollars. The library shall contain more than 8 million books and a reading area with two thousand seats.
This library when it is inaugurated will possess about 400000 volumes in hard and electronic copies. It is designed to hold 4 million volumes. In the future its capacity will reach 8 million using the compressed storage system.
A museum will be attached to the library to house the antiquities discovered at the site in 1993-1994 during the excavation work done under the supervision of the of the Egyptian Antiquities Department. The antiquities discovered belong to Pharaonic, Greek and Roman periods. Two statues will be positioned in the museum; one of them will be of the goddess Isis currently at the Marine Museum, and the second one is the statue of King Ptolemy 2 both are made of granite.
Within the framework of the cooperation and support of UNESCO and Italy, the Alexandria Library has just received the most modern Photocopy Lab, and will later be provided with a microfilm lab.

http://www.geographia.com/egypt/sinai/bedouin.htm
Bedu , the Arabic word from which the name bedouin is derived, is a simple, straightforward tag. It means "inhabitant of the desert," and refers generally to the desert-dwelling nomads of Arabia, the Negev, and the Sinai. For most people, however, the word "bedouin" conjures up a much richer and more evocative imageof lyrical, shifting sands, flowing robes, and the long, loping strides of camels. For several centuries, such images were not far from the truth. In the vast, arid expanses of the Sinai, as in the Negev and the deserts of Arabia, the many tribes of the bedouin journeyed by camel from oasis to oasis, following a traditional way of life and maintaining a pastoral culture of exceptional grace, honor, and beauty. Most of the bedouin tribes of the Sinai are descended from peoples who migrated from the Arabian peninsula between the 14th and 18th centuries, making the bedouin themselves relatively recent arrivals in this ancient land. Today, many of the bedouin of the Sinai have traded their traditional existence for the pursuits and the conventions of the modern world, as startling changes over the last two decades have irrevocably altered the nature of life for the bedouin and for the land they inhabit. Nonetheless, bedouin culture still survives in the Sinai, where there is a growing appreciation of its value and its fragility.

News Bulletin Current Affairs Euro 2004 ... Reader Response Time for a Spring Cleaning in Egypt The dirt of centuries covers the Memnon Colossi in Luxor Egypt There’s nothing like a good thorough cleaning to bring out the shine, especially when it’s a 3000 year old Egyptian statue, and the cleaning crew makes a startling archaeological discovery.
The Memnon Colossi in Luxor have stood the test of time, withering wind and weather for more than three millennia. Once the guards to the entrance of the temple of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, these 18-meter high (59 feet) statues are all that remains of a mighty kingdom on the Nile. The two giant statues have witnessed wars, floods and destruction. Their once proud visages are battered and worn, and they are dirty – covered with the dust and grime of centuries.
