FYI E gyptian C ulture
For several thousand years, the people who have lived in the land of Egypt have built marvelous architectural structures, orchestrated enchanting music and produced awe-inspiring works of art and literature. Culture, like language, varies over time according to the historical development in a country. To summarize we want to look briefly at the cultural achievements of Pharaonic, Coptic and Islamic Egypt. None of these periods lived in complete isolation from the other or the rest of the world. Each has made its own unique contributions. We will limit our Odyssey today to architectural structures, which in some way embody the period's religious and political identity. The most impressive architectural structures in every society, are religious structures. Religious structures are built for eternity.
Pharaonic Egypt
Egypt is probably best known for the architectural achievements of the Egyptians in Pharaonic times. Two of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world were in Egypt. The way in which the pyramids were built still, in some ways, baffles researchers. The marvelous temples and shrines inspire both awe and humility. In confusion, we wonder how these things were built, as if to confess that our own society would be unable to do it.
Coptic Egypt
Desert monasteries are the best surviving evidence for early Coptic architecture. The monasteries are built with simple, available materials like mud or burnt bricks. Larger stones were used when available. The dome was a simple, and functional architectural development that made the best use of the available resources for spanning a roof across a structure when one lacked wood and stone. The dome is the most unique and individualized development in Coptic architecture. Sometimes more ornate stones and finely-worked pieces of marble were stone-robed from abandoned temples in the vicinity of the monastery. Monastic structures suffered from the environment, invasion and the effects of natural disaster. They frequently have confusing evidence of remodeling.

T he arts are as important in modern Egypt as they were in ancient times. Egypt has produced many great writers, of whom Naguib Mahfouz is one of the most famous. Mahfouz wrote some 40 novels and short story collections, as well as 30 screenplays and several plays. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1988 - the first Arab writer to be so honoured. M usic has a long tradition in Egypt. Popular Egyptian music includes folk music of the country, traditional Arabic music, and Western-style music. The country’s most famous singer is Omm Kulthum. Her voice has been celebrated in Egypt and other Arabic-speaking countries for over 50 years. F ilm making is also important in modern Egypt, dating back to the period before World War I. Today modern Egyptian films are shown all over the Arab world, which make the Egyptian dialect the most popular among the Arabic speaking countries.

A word of caution
This site is based on what is considered more or less orthodox chronology, which of course means that there are other, deviant chronologies. On the whole I prefer the plodding examination of facts however few and poorly understood to the flights of fancy of some of the alternative historians. Chances are it gets us a bit closer to the truth, which, unless timetravel is invented, we will never know.
One would like to think that physical remains should leave little to doubt. But stone artefacts and buildings are remarkably difficult to date [

The rings bearing the names of Tutankhamun and his wife Ankhesenamun, and other numerous finds indicate that the site was one of the major cemetery in the period of the late 18th Dynasty to the early 19th Dynasty. Recently a large granite sarcophagus was found in the innermost substructure of the tomb-chapel, and inscribed name "Mes" on the lid has been found. Three shaft tombs located around the tomb-chapel were excavated in Spring 1999 in order to clarify the character of this cemetery. The latest site plan has been available. In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful Art of the Mamluks Art Of The Mamluks, by Dr. Esin Atil , published by the Smithsonian Press.

Esin Atil
Publication made possible by a grant from United Technologies Corporation.
About the Author: Esin Atil, a native of Turkey, received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Atil has been curator of Near Eastern art at the Smithsonian Institution's Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Historical Summary: Mamluk Empire (1250 - 1517 AD)
Following the Ayyubid state in 1250 AD, the Mamluk sultans established a formidable empire, ruling Egypt, Syria, and Palestine for more than two hundred and fifty years, their frontiers extending from southeatern Anatolia to the Hijaz and incorporating parts of Sudan and Libya. Soon after coming to power, they defeated the mongols and explled the last of the Crusaders from the Near East. Trade and agriculture flourshied under Mamluk rule, and Cairo, their capital, became one of the wealthiest cities in the Near East and the center of artistic and intellectual activity. It also became the seat of the caliphate and, thus, the most prestegious capital in the Islamic world.
Illuminated Manuscripts
The exquiste illuminations, calligraphy, and bindings of Mamluk Korans are unequaled in any other Islamic tradition of bookmaking. The technical and artistic virtousity found in these manuscipts is representative of the Mamluks, who, embracing Islam with the fervor of converts, endowed elaborate religious complexes and supplied each major foundation with its set of Korans.
