  • Music of Egypt The region around the Nile is one of the oldest continually-inhabited areas in the world. Ancient Egyptian musicians are known to have played harps and flutes circa 4000 BC, and double clarinets and lyres from around 3500 BC. Percussion instruments were added to orchestras by 2000 BC. It is probable that no system of musical notation existed at the time, as none have survived. The music of ancient Egypt has not been documented, but some musicologists believe that the liturgical music of the Coptic Church is directly descended from ancient Egyptian music.

The interim display includes some of the artefacts and themes which will feature in the new galleries, spanning a period from 2500BC to the 7 th century AD.
The gallery examines our diverse sources for understanding the ancient Egyptian world and places these sources in context. There are four main themes:
    Hieroglyphs and the written record

    Developing the collection

    Illuminating the collection

    Living in ancient Egypt
This last section includes artefacts demonstrating the Egyptians' attitude to their landscape and to their gods, and some domestic material such as furniture and jewellery which provides what little evidence we have for the ancient Egyptian's experience of life. The display as a whole forms the orientation galley to introduce the Roxie Walker Galleries of Egyptian Funerary Archaeology. The display also features several popular star pieces that were previously on display in the recently remodelled Central Saloon of the Egyptian Sculpture Gallery, including the famous

Akhet Hwt-Hrw Temple of Ancient Egyptian Religion
School of Esoteric Studies Ancient Egypt . . . For most people these words conjure images of massive temples, pyramids and tombs; with secret rituals invoking the power of Gods from another age. The world's oldest religious writings come from Egypt, yet few people understand this mysterious and powerful system of spirituality. Akhet is a spiritual organization dedicated to following this ancient legacy. By drawing upon the actual practices and teachings of Egypt from the Pagan era, as revealed by temple inscriptions and papyrus texts, Akhet seeks to reawaken these ancient truths in order to achieve a balanced, healthy spiritual life style for today. Akhet Hwt-Hrw is a temple of Ancient Egyptian religion and School of Esoteric studies. With the resurgence of Pagan philosophies and disciplines, we offer a realistic and practical approach to this ancient system of spirituality for today. As a temple we offer a series of training courses that describe Ancient Egyptain religion and magic in detail. These courses are carefully researched and fully documented to ensure their accuracy. Presented in a three tiered system, the courses take the individual from the stage of beginner, with little training in Ancient Egyptian religion and magic to a point in which they can set up their own temple and perform the ancient rites competently with full knowledge of the concepts, symbolism and spiritual teachings involved. The pages listed below give information about the religion and culture of Ancient Egypt; Egyptian Gods and Goddesses, including

Since ancient times new crops, irrigation methods and settlement patterns have been introduced. The way in which Egyptian culture conceptualised their landscape and its animals shows us their view of the world, even though landscape is not a major theme in Egyptian art. The Nile, which was known simply as `the river', dominated the Egyptian's world-view, and it was uniquely important as a source of food, water, and transport. The river landscape was like western pastoral world, a place of recreation and lovemaking as well as an economic resource, and river plants decorate many artefacts. It was also a potentially dangerous place, and river animals such as crocodiles and hippopotami were greatly feared.

Country Info Egypt Introduction Egypt General Data Egypt Maps Egypt Culture ... Egypt Time and Date Egypt Culture Back to Top Egyptian society in 1990 reflected both ancient roots and the profound changes that have occurred since Napoleon Bonaparte invaded the country in 1798. Land tenure, crops, and cultivation patterns had all been transformed during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the country had become increasingly urbanized and industrialized. Nevertheless, approximately half the population still lived in rural areas where settlement patterns remained defined, as they had been since pharaonic times, by the Nile River and irrigated agriculture. Villages were clustered along both banks of the Nile and along myriad irrigation canals in the Delta. The rise of commercial agriculture in the nineteenth century set in motion a transformation of rural society. Land that was previously held in common by a village and granted in usufruct to individual families was transferred to private ownership. The transfers created a small class of wealthy absentee landowners, a somewhat larger class of relatively prosperous farmers who owned medium-sized parcels of land, and an enormous class of small farmers, sharecroppers, and landless casual laborers. The land-reform measures implemented by the government in the 1950s and 1960s led to the redistribution of nearly 15 percent of the arable land to about 10 percent of the rural population. Land reform limited individual landownership to twenty-one hectares, thus forcing the wealthiest landed families to sell most of their holdings. Small peasant proprietors were the main beneficiaries of the redistribution. By the early 1980s, however, continued population growth and rising production costs had eroded many of the accomplishments of land reform. Inheritance tended to fragment already small holdings, and the number of landless people increased.

Aspects of Life in Ancient Egypt
One of the most astonishing facts about Egypt is how little everyday life changed over the millennia. The rhythm of Egyptian life was the rhythm of the Nile until a few years ago, when the Aswan dam was erected. Even today one can find the ancient shadoof, oxen pulling ploughs and houses made of mud bricks.
The gods are gone, so are the pharaohs, the language and the writing. The cities look European in a ramshackle sort of way, transportation is partly 20th century, there's some industry, and radio and television are everywhere. But villages in the farther off corners of the country must still look very much like those of thousands of years ago.
    • I mostly choose topics not widely dealt with on the web. For the time being I do not include anything about pyramids or royal tombs for instance, as plenty of material can be found on these subjects.

HOME Temples and Tombs Pyramids of Giza Thebes Valley of the Kings Egypt TEMPLES AND TOMBS A journey along the Nile The waters of the mighty Nile allowed the otherwise dry land of Egypt to become a cradle for one of the world's greatest ancient civilizations. From the start of the Old Kingdom around 2686 BC, an era of rule by pharaohs of more than 30 family dynasties continued almost unbroken for nearly 3000 years. After the glorious New Kingdom, the age of the Egyptian pharaohs ended with decline and rule by the Ptolemies. Today, we can travel along the Nile and explore a succession of old temples and tombs that are testimonies to the remarkable achievements of the people of ancient Egypt. The Old Kingdom: AGE OF THE PYRAMIDS The ancient Egyptian civilization of the Nile Valley came of age under Old Kingdom rulers of dynasties 3 to 6. Their greatest legacies are the huge Giza Pyramids, the results of a spectacular program of pyramid building. The Pyramids of Giza epitomize ancient Egypt, but they were the results of a short period of pyramid building during the Old Kingdom. The Giza Pyramids were built as tombs for the fourth dynasty kings Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure who ruled Egypt through 2589-2504 BC. The largest is the Great Pyramid of Khufu, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. But the ancient Egyptians did not think of the pyramids just as resting places for the dead. They believed their rulers were divine god-kings who would ascend from the pyramid to take their place among the gods in the afterlife.
