    Thoughts on Ancient Egyptian Mathematics
    Kim R. W. Zahrt
    Communicated by: Dr. Micheal Kinyon
Department of Mathematics ABSTRACT Do the experts, Egyptomologist, know the true history of Egypt, and furthermore, are they sure of the level of Egyptian mathematical thought? This paper demonstrates two problems found on ancient papyri, and examines the words of scholars to determine the answer to the above questions. It has been said that Egyptian mathematics was only practical arithmetic and simple geometry. There are several scholars who contend Egyptians lacked formal proofs and stated rules, and therefore they lacked ``the scientific attitude of mind'' (Gillings 232). Thomas Eric Peet, a noted professor of Egyptology, refers to the table of fractions in the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus as being proof that the Egyptians did not reach a scientific understanding of mathematics (ibid). Concerning geometry, Bartel L. Van der Waerdan in Science Awakening II states ``The Egyptians of the Middle Kingdom had methods for calculating areas . . . but there is no textual evidence of a geometry with constructions and proofs. Furthermore . . . the mathematical texts were no longer copied after the Hyksos period'' (41). These and other scholars contend that the Egyptians did not have the rigor of mathematics, and the value of studying Egyptian mathematics lies only in its place as history. There are two prime sources which are considered the best examples of Egyptian mathematics. These are the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus and the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus. Several other sources exist such as the the Kahun Mathematical Fragments and the Mathematical Leather Roll at the British Museum, but these add nothing of substance to our knowledge of ancient Egyptian mathematics.

... The Art of the Fake: Egyptian Forgeries This collection All of the IPL Advanced
Welcome to an exciting exhibition! We worked with Robin Meador-Woodruff of the Kelsey Museum of Archeology to bring you this special exhibition of selected Egyptian artifacts both real and fake. In this exhibition, you'll learn how and why museums come to acquire forgeries, and what we mean when we talk about different kinds of fakes. You'll even have a chance to compare many of these forgeries with the genuine article. Most museum collections contain a certain number of forgeries, and the collections of the Kelsey Museum of Archeology are no exception. Over the almost one hundred years of museum collecting history, various objects of dubious authenticity have found their way into the collections. Forgeries are collected both inadvertently and on purpose by museums. Often, a donated object will be accepted by a museum which has no curator whose expertise lies in that type of material. The piece may appear to be genuine to a non-specialist, and the object enters the collections. Later examination by an expert will prove that the piece can not be original. In other cases, the piece may be accepted as genuine by the experts until subsequent scholarship or scientific testing disproves authenticity. Finally, there are cases where forgeries are of such a convincing construction that they simply fool the experts. Often, forgers are well-educated enough to be familiar with those aspects which popular scholarship attributes to the works of a particular period, and incorporate those aspects into a forgery.

    http://carlos.emory.edu/ODYSSEY/EGYPT/arch.html
Why is King Tut So Famous? Archaeology! The tomb of King Tutankhamen is one of the most famous because of its well-known discovery by Howard Carter, a British archaeologist. Carter excavated in the Valley of the Kings for eleven years before he discovered Tut's tomb in 1922. Tutankhamen wasn't an especially important king, but his tomb was the only royal burial found intact in modern times. The tomb was important because it let archaeologists record what an Egyptian king's tomb looked like and learn more about ancient Egypt. One of King Tutankhamen's Nobles is now in Rochester, New York! This relief depicts Maya, an important official during the reign of three pharaohs: Tutankhamen, Ay, and Horemhab. He supervised the preparation of the tombs of these pharaohs, collected taxes for them, and performed other tasks to serve the king. The Memorial Art Gallery bought this carving in 1942. It originally decorated the inside wall of Maya's tomb in Saqqara, the necropolis of the ancient city of Memphis, southwest of Cairo. How did it get to Rochester? Here Today, Gone Tomorrow....The Discovery of Maya's Tomb.
