Welcome To
RIGBY'S WORLD OF EGYPT

EGYPT REMEMBERED

"Wondrous scenes of an ancient land
Temples, tombs, once buried in sand
Treasures and secrets of a long ago time
Forever cherished within one's mind."
Margaret S. Rigby) Egypt is a country rich in history and culture. Apart from a few unsafe areas, Egypt remains generally safe and the people very friendly. Most people who visit Egypt fall in love with the country as did my father , whose paintings can be found on this site, and mother whose verse appears at left. This personal web site contains about 120 pages which reflect my interest in Egypt. Take a tour of the country, relish ancient poetry, find out about Egyptian antiquities, see Egypt from above, plus much more. Like Egypt - you'll never know what wonders you'll encounter in unexpected corners of my web site. I hope you enjoy your visit. Mark T. Rigby SOME HIGHLIGHTS Middle Egypt coming soon Al-Ahram Review

The side view of the small model explaining the fuselage and the vertical tail.
Fig. 2- The front view of the small model explaining the
dihederal angle of the wings.       A small wooden artifact was found in the excavations around the step pyramid of Saqqara in 1898 by the French archaeologist Lauret. This piece was registered in the archives of the Egyptian  museum of Antiquities in Cairo as a "Statuette of a bird". It was placed in the bird section of the museum under the number 6347, and a little more was thought of it for 70 years.
The Egyptian Physician, artist and aeromodeller Dr.Khalil Messiha rediscovered the same artifact in the year 1969 in the museum. Dr. Khalil found that this model differs considerably from other birds models in that it was legless and had a straight tail and wings. The figure weighed 39.12 gms, its wings were 18 cm long and its fuselage is a 14 -cm long piece with an airfoil shape beautifully carved and smooth except for the tip which  is slightly worn out. The part of the tail is broken, and Dr. Khalil presumes that a stabilizer was attached to that missing part. The aging wood artifact was affected by weather conditions. The vertical tail is slightly slanting towards the right when looked at from the back.

The sounds of ancient Egypt
Violinist believes music is key to understanding how pharaohs spoke
May 11, 1997
Web posted at: 3:58 p.m. EDT (1958 GMT) CAIRO, Egypt (CNN) Archaeologists have been able to read Egyptian hieroglyphics since 1822, when French Egyptologist Jean Francois Champollion and British physicist Thomas Young deciphered the text of the famed Rosetta Stone. Found by French military engineers in 1799 in the Egyptian seaside town Rosetta, the slab of basalt contained the same text written in three languages: Greek, hieroglyphics the "official" Egyptian language and the everyday written language, demotic. Young and Champollion unlocked Egyptian mysteries lost for centuries, but most archaeologists believe the sounds of ancient Egypt are as lost today as they were to the men who cracked the hieroglyphics code. Classical violinist Mohamed Misri , however, disagrees. He says that by comparing ancient Egyptian song lyrics with Coptic songs of today, he has been able to approximate how the language of the pharaohs must have sounded. Coptic is the language of Egypt's centuries-old Christian community. But many Egyptologists are not convinced by Misri's musical adaptations, because Coptic contains ancient Greek in addition to ancient Egyptian words and phrasing.

FLORILEGIUM People and Places in the Ancient World
These five ancient cultures did more than any other country or people to advance the progress of the Western mind and culture. From the Near East came writing, metallurgy, law and even the 60 minute hour. Egypt developed technical skill in construction and art that still today amazes us. Greece, a laboratory of democracy, contributed philosophy, sculpture, architecture and the love of freedom. Rome offered numerical symbols, language, politics and laws. The articles contained in this site grew out of a love for the Ancient World and my participation in two sites, both of which no longer exist on the internet - Ancient Sites and Ancient Vines. Here I was able to meet like minded folks, discuss and debate history and learn far more than I'd dreamed possible. RECOMMENDED READING ON THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST
A Guide to Introductory Readings on the Ancient Near Eastern World
A Collaborative Production of The Research Archives of the Oriental Institute The Oriental Institute Museum The Oriental Institute Museum Education Program Recommended Reading is a guide to introductory readings on the peoples and cultures of the ancient Near East. Some of the material included here ( Ancient Mesopotamia ) was originally published as the Resource Guide included with one of the three volumes ( Life in Ancient Egypt, Life in Ancient Nubia, Life in Ancient Mesopotamia ) of the Guides for Teachers Based on the Collections and Resources of the Oriental Institute Museum, University of Chicago (Chicago, 1996), produced by the Museum Education Program with the generous support of a grant from the Polk Bros. Foundation. We have made some additions and corrections, and slightly altered the structure of that Resources Guide for the purposes of providing this information on-line, and we expect to add additional material as needed. The Egyptian and Nubian lists have been developed by Emily Teeter in the course of many years of teaching and lecturing and will change as new material is published. In addition, we are planning to add more lists as we identify topics of interest to the public. We welcome your suggestions. This on-line version was coordinated and processed into HTML by Charles E. Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egyptian history covers a continuous period of over three thousand years. To put this in perspective - most modern countries count their histories in hundreds of years. Only modern China can come anywhere near this in terms of historical continuity.
Egyptian culture declined and disappeared nearly two thousand years ago. The last vestiges of the living culture ceased to exist in AD 391 when the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I closed all pagan temples throughout the Roman Empire.
It was not until Napoleon's invasion of Egypt in 1798 that the wonderful artefacts of the Egyptians were seen in Europe and their ancient culture began to awaken from its long slumber.
On this site you will find lots of Egyptian stuff. There are stories of the great and in the section you can explore the ancient monuments; using interactive maps, photos, drawings, and paintings.
