Welcome to our Ancient History Projects on the Web
Graphic based on a lithograph "Side View of the Great Sphinx,
Pyramids of Geezeh" by David Roberts Introduction: Grade Five and Six students from The International School of Amsterdam have worked on several investigative projects in 1996-97 and 1997-98. In Spring 1997 grade six students spent a month studying Ancient Egypt . They worked in pairs or in threes studying different aspects: the geography, the history, religion, the social structure and daily life and technology. Following the Egyptian project, students chose another civilization they wanted to learn more about. The choices included the Romans Greeks Celts Vikings ... Incas , Aztecs, Chinese , Etruscans, Maoris , and North American Indians. The groups then made a presentation to their classmates using multi-media authoring tools and in August 1997 a number of their projects were added to our Grade 6 Social Studies Web Site with links to other Internet resources and related school projects.

THE MOON IN ANCIENT HISTORY
(Ancient Astronmical Calendars)
Astronomical calendars have been in existence for thousands of years. For our ancient ancestor's time was measured by the number of Moons that had passed from a certain period, and by the shadows that the Sun and Moon cast.
There are "Man made" lunar calendars that some scientists place as old as 32,000 years. Some recent archeological findings are from the Ice Age where hunters carved notches and gouged holes into sticks, reindeer bones and the tusks of mammoths, depicting the days between each phase of the Moon. These artifacts are dated between 25,000 and 10,000 B.C. There are also surviving astronomical records inscribed on oracle bones dating back to the Shang dynasty of the fourteenth century B.C. that reveal a Chinese calendar, with intercalation of lunar months. The Sun, Moon, planets, and stars have provided us a reference for measuring the passage of time throughout history. All cultures before recorded history charted the heavenly skies to make some sort of sense out of their environment.
In Egypt, the paths of the stars were recorded as early as 6,000 years before Christ. The wisest of the Egyptians were the Hermetic philosophers, who possessed a profound knowledge of the sky. They relied upon the predictable motion of these bodies through the sky to determine the seasons, months, and years. People began a preoccupation with measuring and recording the passage of time. There was a need for planning and for divination and prognostication; to maintain these cycles meant that records needed to be kept and observatories needed to be built to precisely measure these cycles.

The Alchemists
Chinese Alchemy Egyptian Alchemy Arabian Alchemy ... Return to Top from Alchemy Rediscovered and Restored (by A. Cockren, 1940) and Mystics and Seers of All Ages (by Reginald Merton 1935) The Alchemists To most of us, the word "alchemy" calls up the picture of a medieval and slightly sinister laboratory in which an aged, black-robed wizard broods over the crucibles and alembics that are to bring within his reach the Philosopher's Stone, and with that discovery, the formula for the Elixir of life and the transmutation of metals. But one can scarcely dismiss so lightly the science or art, if you will that won to its service the lifelong devotion of men of culture and attainment from every race and clime over a period of thousands of years, for the beginnings of alchemy are hidden in the mists of time. Such a science is something far more than an outlet for a few eccentric old men in their dotage. What was the motive behind their constant strivings, their never-failing patience in the unravelling of the mysteries, the tenacity of purpose in the face of persecution and ridicule through the countless ages that led the alchemists to pursue undaunted their appointed way? Something far greater, surely, than a mere vainglorious desire to transmute the base metals into gold, or to brew a potion to prolong a little longer this earthly span, for the devotees of alchemy in the main cared little for such things.

When did ancient months start?
In the eighth century B.C.E., civilizations all over the world either discarded or modified their old 360 day calendars. The 360 day calendars had been in use for the greater part of a millennium. In many places, month lengths immediately after that change were not fixed, but were based instead upon observation of the sky. Priest-astronomers were assigned the duty of declaring when a new month began it was usually said to have started at the first sighting of a new moon. Month length at that time was simply the number of days that passed from one new lunar crescent to the next. During those years in Rome, for example, a Pontifex (priest) observed the sky and announced a new moon and therefore the new month to the king. For centuries afterward Romans referred to the first day of each new month as Kalends or Kalends from their word calare (to announce solemnly, to call out). The word

As well as ancient languages, several modern ones are members of the group. Connections between this group and the Indo-European group (to which most European languages belong) are a matter of debate. A 'family tree' model of this group is shown below. INSTITUTE OF ARCHAEOLOGY
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON 16th - 18th DECEMBER 2000 with generous support from HSBC The international conference ENCOUNTERS WITH ANCIENT EGYPT will take place at the UCL Institute of Archaeology on 16th-18th December 2000.
The conference will examine the ways in which the cultures of Egypt - predynastic, dynastic, Hellenistic, Roman, late-antique, Islamic, colonial - have perpetually been re-configured in response to changing ideologies and strategies for appropriating the past. As well as presenting new or neglected sets of data, we hope that contributors will also be inspired to offer papers that constitute a fresh look at familiar evidence from a variety of theoretical viewpoints.
Papers
The sessions on 16th December and 18th December will be devoted entirely to discussion. All papers will be pre-circulated, using the web where possible. All papers will be made available before the conference, as they are received. Programme
