Five Day Plan for Reading

Unit topic: Ancient Egypt
Reading Selection: Bill and Pete Go Down the Nile
Tomie dePaola, author and illustrator
by Marianne Welker Indianapolis Public Schools Indianapolis, Indiana e-mail address: mtqueen@worldnet.att.net July 4, l999 Summary
This five day plan demonstrates the use of NUA (National Urban Alliance) strategies to teach reading skills with a particular focus on tactics to reach those students who struggle with the reading process as has been traditionally taught in the public schools of the United States. These research-based strategies address issues at the forefront of education today: the application of higher order thinking skills, the use of thematic links across the curriculum, and the creation of an environment for learning in the classroom. Incorporated into the format of the five day plan are engagement activities which connect with the learner: graphic organizers; musical books; highly reoccurring phonics elements; word walls; bingo, scramble, and tic-tac-toe games used as instructional tools; vocabulary words learned in poetry; think-pair-share techniques; and student journals. The plan also addresses several major organizational concerns of teachers: smooth transitions between activities and community building within the classroom. Suggested resources are included.

THE HISTORY OF ANCIENT EGYPT
About 5,000 years ago, a remarkable way of life, or civilization, grew up along the banks of the Nile River in Egypt. It flourished for over 3,000 years, longer than most other civilizations in the world's history. Egypt is among the most influential of Islamic states. It lies in North Africa. This ancient country holds a history of over 6,000 years and has many exciting attractions for travelers. The Pyramids, the Sphinx, the tomb of young King Tut are just a few attractions that interest and excite people of all ages. EGYPT'S CREATION Egyptian history begins around 3300 BC. This was when the Egyptians finally had enough symbols in their writing to record history. From 3100 BC inscriptions created a way for later Egyptians. It was also the time when the pharaoh, King Menes, created Egypt by uniting the two parts of Egypt, also known as Upper and Lower Egypt, into a single kingdom. He started Memphis in the north and Abydos in the south as his capital cities. A series of strong and able rulers established a well organized government. The calendar was introduced during this time and the sun-god Re was the most loved god-figure. Over time, authority began to disappear and Egypt was controlled by foreign princes. These rulers introduced the horses and chariots to Egypt. EGYPT REIGNS THE NILE RIVER PHARAOHS PYRAMIDS T HIEROGLYPHIC INSCRIPTIONS

HOME Temples and Tombs Pyramids of Giza Thebes Valley of the Kings Egypt ANCIENT THEBES Temples for gods and kings Present day Luxor in Egypt is built on the Nile at the site of ancient Thebes, a city that reached its glory under New Kingdom pharaohs. It was in Thebes that the imposing temples of Karnak and Luxor were built over three thousand years ago to honor the great god Amun. Successive pharaohs endeavored to outdo their predecessors by enlarging and embellishing these cult centers. By doing this they hoped to please the gods and enhance their own status. Over the years, the Karnak and Luxor temples grew ever more magnificent... Houses of the gods
Egyptian cult temples like those at Karnak and Luxor were dedicated to gods who were served there by the pharaoh and his priests. In return, the gods gave life and order to the land of Egypt. The pharaoh of ancient Egypt was more than a head of state, he was looked upon as a divine link between the gods and his people.
The principal builders in ancient Thebes included the New Kingdom pharaohs Tuthmosis III and Amenhotep III of dynasty 18, and Ramesses II of dynasty 19. Ramesses II, known as Ramesses the Great, was a prolific builder enamoured of colossal statues of himself.

Biography
The pyramids have long fascinated Robert Bauval. He is Egyptian, born in Al-Iskandariyya (Alexandria) to Belgian parents, and has spent most of his life living and working in the Middle East. For many years he had pondered over the significance of Sah, the constellation of Orion, and its link to the pyramids. One night, while working in Saudi Arabia, he took his family and a friend's family up into the sand dunes of the Arabian desert for a camping expedition.
Bauval knew that the seemingly inconsistent layout of the three Fourth Dynasty pyramids at Giza was no accident, and had applied his own engineer's mind, and those of many friends to the problem. Most agreed that the alignment, though unusual, was no accident, given the precise mathematical knowledge that the Egyptians had. His friend, a keen amateur astronomer, pointed out Orion, and mentioned, in passing, that Mintaka, the smaller more easterly of the stars making up Orion's belt was offset slightly from the others. Immediately Bauval saw the answer the three Belt Stars were aligned in exactly the same way as the three pyramids!

Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egypt was a narrow strip of land along the Nile River. Each year the river flooded its banks, leaving behind a fertile fringe of soil they called "the Black Land," while the desert all around the Nile valley was called "the Red Land." This land was proted from foreign influence for four major reasons.
  • The land surrounding the Nile River Valley is a desert.
  • There are several cataracts (or large waterfalls) along the Nile River south of the ancient civilization which impaired invasion
  • Not many people ventured into the sea before 1500BC, so the Mediterranean Sea formed a natural border.
  • Enemies, therefore, could only invade Egypt by crossing the narrow Isthmus of Suez.

Introduction to the Age of the Pyramids Primary Sources of Information about the Age of the Pyramids
We know more about the Ancient Egyptians than any other ancient civilization. Tombs are major primary sources of information about Ancient Egypt. The Ancient Egyptians believed that death was not the end; there was an afterlife. This afterlife would be very much like this life. The deceased would still need food, drink, clothing and other necessities of ordinary life. Ancient Egyptians who could afford to do so constructed tombs for themselves and placed many of their possessions inside. They wrote their own names and titles, and sometimes something about their characters, on the walls of their tombs, so that the living would be moved to pray for them. Knowing that thieves might break into their tombs and steal their provisions, the Ancient Egyptians also placed named images of these articles on the walls of their tombs. Their own bodies - mummified human remains or skeletons - are still often found in their tombs.

Ancient Egypt - Land of the River
Written by: Abe Abouzeid “All of Egypt is the gift of the Nile.” It was the Greek historian Herodotus who made that observation. The remarkable benefits of the Nile are clear to everyone, but through history he was the first to talk about it and consider its fascination. Through history, the Nile played a major role in the building of civilizations. The first civilizations to appear in history started on a river valley or in a place where resources are numerous and example of these are in India where Indus river is found and Tigris where Euphrates is found and many other places (cradles of civilization). The Nile is the longest river in the world, cuts a swath of green and life through the bareness of the giant Sahara desert in northern Africa. It is almost 4160 miles long from its remotest head stream, the Lavironza river in Burundi, in central Africa to its delta on the Mediterranean sea north east of Egypt. The river flows northward and drain 1100100 square miles, about tenth the size of Africa, passing through ten African countries. It has many tributaries but there are two main ones: the White Nile fed by lake Victoria and the Blue Nile coming from Ethiopian mountains. These two main branches join near Khartoum, the capital of Sudan and they continue together as Nile proper until meeting the Mediterranean Sea and forming the Nile delta in northern Egypt.

It is the one and only Wonder that does not need speculations concerning its appearance, size, and shape. It is the oldest, yet it is the only surviving of the Seven Ancient Wonders. It is the Great Pyramid of Giza. Location:
At the city of Giza, a necropolis of ancient Memphis, and today part of Greater Cairo, Egypt. History
Contrary to the common belief, only the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), not all three Great Pyramids, is on top of the list of Wonders. The monument was built by the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu of the Fourth Dynasty around the year 2560 BC to serve as a tomb when he dies. The tradition of pyramid building started in Ancient Egypt as a sophistication of the idea of a mastaba or "platform" covering the royal tomb. Later, several stacked mastabas were used. Early pyramids, such as the Step Pyramid of King Zoser (Djoser) at Saqqara by the famous Egyptian architect, Imhotep, illustrate this connection. The great pyramid is believed to have been built over a 20 year period. The site was first prepared, and blocks of stone were transported and placed. An outer casing (which disappeared over the years) was then used to smooth the surface. Although it is not known how the blocks were put in place, several theories have been proposed. One theory involves the construction of a straight or spiral ramp that was raised as the construction proceeded. This ramp, coated with mud and water, eased the displacement of the blocks which were pushed (or pulled) into place. A second theory suggests that the blocks were placed using long levers with a short angled foot.
