b.02-15-99 posted October 31, 2000 12:39 The thought crosses my mind about when should Civilization III begin in a normal game: 4,000 B.C., 5,000 B.C., 6,000 B.C., 7,000 B.C., or maybe even 8,000 B.C. Perhaps the player(s) should be able choose when to begin. Anyway, here is an article on Ancient Civilization from Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia 1998. Please read it, and then you decide: ANCIENT CIVILIZATION. The term civilization basically means the level of development at which people live together peacefully in communities. Ancient civilization refers specifically to the first settled and stable communities that became the basis for later states, nations, and empires.
The study of ancient civilization is concerned with the earliest segments of the much broader subject called ancient history. The span of ancient history began with the invention of writing in about 3100 BC and lasted for more than 35 centuries. Mankind existed long before the written word, but writing made the keeping of a historical record possible (see Human Origins).
The first ancient societies arose in Mesopotamia and Egypt in the Middle East, in the Indus Valley region of modern Pakistan, in the Huang He (Yellow River) valley of China, on the island of Crete in the Aegean Sea, and in Central America. All of these civilizations had certain features in common. They built cities, invented forms of writing, learned to make pottery and use metals, domesticated animals, and created fairly complex social structures with class systems.

    NEW! Released January 6, 2003
by Robert Aquinas McNally (Contributor), Robert M. Schoch Book Description
Is it a mere coincidence that pyramids are found across our globe? Did cultures ranging across vast spaces in geography and time, such as the ancient Egyptians; early Buddhists; the Maya, Inca, Toltec, and Aztec civilizations of the Americas; the Celts of the British Isles; and even the Mississippi Indians of pre-Columbian Illinois, simply dream the same dreams and envision the same structures? Scientist and tenured university professor Robert M. Schoch-one of the world's preeminent geologists in recasting the date of the Great Sphinx-believes otherwise. In this dramatic and meticulously reasoned book, Schoch, like anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl in his classic Kon-Tiki, argues that ancient cultures traveled great distances by sea. Indeed, he believes that primeval sailors traveled from the Eastern continent, primarily Southeast Asia, and spread the idea of pyramids across the Earth, involving the human species in a far greater degree of contact and exchange than experts have previously thought possible.

Here are the traditional cheesy pyramid shots. You can't really be a proper Egypt tourist until you've been on a horse or camel, and been cheated at least a dozen times. On this particular day, I drug my ass out of bed at 4AM to see the pyramids at dawn, but ended up riding a horse for an hour just to look at fog. This particular shot was taken several hours later. These shots show some of the other things that appear around the pyramids. The pyramids were part of an evolutionary process that made the ancient Egyptians use more and more elaborate burial rituals up until the pyramids, and then go back to simpler ones after that. This one shows an old cemetery close to the pyramids. This one shows remains of some of the earlier tombs that were used before the pyramid idea took shape. There are better examples of the earlier tomb styles at other places in Egypt that I didn't go to. These shots try to give some idea of the size of these things. They're

The Orion Mystery : Unlocking the Secrets of the Pyramids
by Robert Bauval, Adrian Gilbert (Contributor), Peter Ginna (Editor)
Using astronomical data about stellar movement, they argue that the Orion stars coincide exactly with the pyramids' positions in approximately 10,400 b.c.a period the Egyptians called the First Time, when they believed the god Osiris ruled the Earth. The authors also speculate that the mysterious space within the Great Pyramid discovered by Gantenbrink contains the mythical Benben stone, which the Egyptians linked to the creation of the world. One of the most intriquing and plausable theories that have come out lately. Worth reading.

If you're tired of beaches or ski resorts, then why don't you set off on a journey and discover 10 lands that have served as the home to great civilizations, legendary battles, great statesmen, revolutions, and various aspects that have defined and shaped the world, as we know it? Admittedly, practically every current day country could have made this list, as these 10 destinations offer tourists a safe trip and promise to teach you various things about life, arts, culture, history, and humanity, while ultimately proving that history is indeed a never-ending spiral. In other words, yes, Mesopotamia (current day Iraq) may have been the cradle of civilization, and Israel may have had an interesting history, but we would not send our readers there today. This list will take you places far and wide, and will span various time periods. So get ready, as we are about to sail away. Russia Russia has always been enigmatic to foreigners. Whether this is because of its geographical size, its Communist past or the excessive James Bond flicks, today Russia is struggling to gain some balance and stability. But Russia's vast human and natural resources make it a great country that will one day rise to the top of international circles again. Russia is huge, and no, we do not necessarily suggest you trek out to Vladivostok, but cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg provide a glimpse into much of Russia's past to help find out why Ivan was so Terrible and Peter so Great.

    Question:
Our family has been in the exclusive field of heavy moving and rigging for centuries. I cannot help but to notice that much of the current team's approach to this endeavor consists of novice-generated theories, instead of "hands on" experience in heavy moving and rigging.
Indeed, my quandary in this matter is not HOW the objects were rigged, but in narrowing down the plethora of numerous available specific procedures and practices to one, verifiable approach.
    (name witheld by request)
    Response from Mark Lehner:
Our theories are not generated by novices. Roger Hopkins and our Egyptian foreman Ali el Gasab have spent their careers moving heavy weights. We have Mark Whitby and Henry Woodlock, who are both engineers, and we have Owain Roberts who is an experienced boat builder and has done his share of moving things about. Finally, we have Denys Stocks, who has long experimented with ancient stone-cutting technology.
    Question:
I was of the understanding that there was significant Roman influence in Egypt. I realize that what you are investigating is far older than that influence of the great Roman rulers such as Marcus Aurelius or Agustus, but my question is this: Have the years of various cultural influences affected the excavation and examination of more ancient civilizations? Do these layers of newer civilizations above the older impede your discoveries

As early as 1400 B.C. under the magnificent emperor, Amenhotep III., great-grandson of Thutmose III., the expanded conception of the Sun-god's power was gaining currency. In order to give this magnified Sun-god a new identity, not embarrassed by older and more limited conceptions, "Aton," an ancient name for the physical sun, was employed to designate him. When Amenhotep III. died (c. 1375 B.C.), his son and successor, Amenhotep IV., was closely associated with the new ideas. He assumed the office of the High Priest of Aton, with the same title, "Great Seer," as that of the high priest of the old Sun-god Re at Heliopolis. It is clear therefore, that the new movement was closely connected with the old Solar theology and probably with its organized priesthood likewise.
