W hat do we really know about the lives of the ancient Egyptians? Tomb paintings and sacred hieroglyphic texts provide a glimpse into the world of the elite, but information on the lives of ordinary people remains scant. The majority of the population of ancient Egypt were peasants who played a vital role within the country's strict hierarchical society. Egypt: Daily Life
Ancient Egypt was a narrow strip of land along the Nile River. Each year the river flooded its banks, leaving behind a fertile fringe of soil they called "the Black Land," while the desert all around the Nile valley was called "the Red Land." It was here the Ancient Egyptians built their homes.
Family Life
The people of ancient Egypt highly valued family life. They treasured children and regarded them as a great blessing. In the lower class families, the mother raised the children. The wealthy and nobility, had slaves and servants that helped take care of the children by attending to their daily needs. If a couple had no children, they would pray to the gods and goddesses for help. They would also place letters at the tombs of dead relatives asking them to use their influence with the gods. Magic was also used as an attempt to have children. In event that a couple still could not conceive a child, adoption was also an option. Although women were expected to obey their fathers and husbands, they were equal to men in many ways. They had the legal right to participate in business deals, own land, and were expected to represent themselves in court cases. Women even faced the same penalties as men. Sometimes wives and mothers of pharaohs were the "real" ruling power in government, though they ruled unknowingly to common people. Queen Hatshepsut was the only woman who ruled out right by declaring herself pharaoh. An Egyptian wife and mother were highly respected in this ancient society.

Ancient Egypt was a narrow strip of land along the Nile River. Each year the river flooded its banks, leaving behind a fertile fringe of soil they called "the Black Land," while the desert all around the Nile valley was called "the Red Land." This land was proted from foreign influence for four major reasons.
  • The land surrounding the Nile River Valley is a desert.
  • There are several cataracts (or large waterfalls) along the Nile River south of the ancient civilization which impaired invasion
  • Not many people ventured into the sea before 1500BC, so the Mediterranean Sea formed a natural border.
  • Enemies, therefore, could only invade Egypt by crossing the narrow Isthmus of Suez.

    Introduction
Ancient Egypt was the birthplace of one of the world's first civilizations. This advanced culture arose about 5,000 years ago in the Nile River Valley in northeastern Africa. It thrived for over 2,000 years and so became one of the longest lasting civilizations in history. The ancient Egyptians made outstanding contributions to the development of civilization. They created the world's first national government, basic forms of arithmetic, and a 365-day calendar. They invented a form of picture writing called hieroglyphics. They also invented papyrus, a paperlike writing material made from the stems of papyrus plants. The Egyptians developed one of the first religions to emphasize life after death. They built great cities in which many skilled architects, doctors, engineers, painters, and sculptors worked.

Indus Valley Civilization Daily Life - 3000-1500 BC In 1922, archaeologists found the remains of an ancient city called Harappa. They also found another city, located 400 miles southwest of Harappa, called Mohenjo-Daro. Other ancient cities from the same period, arranged in the same way, have been found since. Collectively, this civilization is referred to as the Indus Valley Civilization (sometimes, the Harappan civilization). This civilization existed from about 3000-2,500 BC to about 1500 BC, which means it existed at about the same time as the Egyptian and Sumerian civilizations. HOMES Houses were one or two stories high, made of baked brick, with flat roofs, and were just about identical. Each was built around a courtyard, with windows overlooking the courtyard. The outside walls had no windows. Each home had its own private drinking well and its own private bathroom. Clay pipes led from the bathrooms to sewers located under the streets. These sewers drained into nearly rivers and streams. CLOTHING Men and women dressed in colorful robes. Women wore jewelry of gold and precious stone, and even wore lipstick! Among the treasures found was a statue of a women wearing a bracelet. (Bracelets with similar designs are worn today in India.)

    A Message of Ancient Days
    Understanding Primary Sources:
A Day in the Life of an Ancient Egyptian
Objective: Students research aspects of Egyptian daily life, then combine their research to write stories reflecting what they have learned. What You Need: Suggested Time:
4-5 hours over 3 days Building Background:
Ask the class to think about how the work that went into building public monuments and tombs in ancient Egypt was supported by the work and efforts of everyday people. Have the class speculate about a day in the life of an average Egyptian. What did he or she do, eat, wear? Make a list of aspects of Egyptian daily life: food, clothing/jewelry, homes/furnishings, recreation, family life, crafts. Tell students they will research these topics to learn more about Egyptian daily life, and write stories that reflect what they have learned. What To Do: Organize students into research groups, and assign each a research topic. Send them to the library to find materials. Remind each group to keep careful notes on what they find. One good source of information about Egyptian daily life is Egyptian Life by Mirian Stead. Also, if you have Internet access, students can use this site for information:
