Evaluation is Gathering Evidence about the Impact of Teaching
Evaluation in higher education entails gathering evidence about the impact of teaching, topic and course design on students' participation and achievement and the appropriateness of content and processes for intended purposes. Effective evaluation of teaching and topics is the basis of good educational practice. Evaluation of teaching and topics must be done with a purpose. For evaluations to be effective and useful you need to clarify what is it that you want to know or to demonstrate about your teaching. The are many possible purposes for assessing, sources of information and uses for which the evidence might be used. Evaluation needs to be deliberate. In particular, it needs to be a continuous process. This web page examines the following areas:

Teaching Effective Communication Through Graded Reading Materials
by Yoda Schmidt I have worked hard to make creative lessons for my students, but I haven't always met with success. Even when a lesson was fun and well done in class, it often fails to produce any lasting results. I sometimes ask students to recall what we learned the previous class and am met with blank stares. That's always a disappointment. T he activity described in this article is not like that at all. It produces results. I swear by it. It is the single most effective activity in my bag o' tricks. And the best thing about it is that it has a duo purpose: it helps students learn the language that is set before them and, more importantly, it teaches them to be effective communicators. How do you indentify possible dyslexia in a pupil?
The criteria most commonly used in assessment is the disparity (difference) between a pupil's intelligence and their actual achievement.
If a pupil tou teach appears to speak and listen normally, yet they are unable to read and spell, then there may be more to check out.
Some of the well-known symptoms of dyslexia are:
  • confusion over the direction letters face (b/d, p/9, p/q);
  • difficulties with left and right;
  • difficulties with keeping organized;
  • difficulties with spelling
  • difficulties with directions (e.g. east and west);
  • missing out words when reading.
More information What causes dyslexia To be quite honest, nobody quite knows at the moment. There has been a real increase in the amount of research taking place, and a number of possibilities are beginning to emerge, but the waters are still fairly murky. The overall picture is that dyslexia can be caused in two ways: 1. by hearing problems at an early age; and

However, the contents of this chapter may not be copied, printed, or distributed in hard copy form without permission.] A sizable portion of the work involved in teaching a large lecture course takes place well before the first day of classes. For example, in a seminar you can make a spur-of-the-moment assignment, but in large classes you may need to distribute written guidelines. Similarly, in small classes students can easily turn in their homework during class. In large lectures you must decide how to distribute and collect papers without consuming precious class time. All these tasks take planning and organization. Many of the following suggestions for teaching large classes will also work for small classes: good teaching practices apply to classes of any type. Henry Adams once said, "A teacher affects eternity." Teachers in private schools profoundly appreciate the eternal dimensions of their work, for they nourish not only the minds but also the hearts and souls of their students. Serving in schools that emphasize a child's complete development, private school teachers have the privileged opportunity to transmit the core academic skills as well as the lessons that count most in life: lessons about spirituality, love, values, the wonder of creation, the purpose of existence. Can any work be more important? Indeed, the work of the private school teacher is of such significance, it is often regarded as a ministry and a calling, rather than just a job. Patty Quinn, a teacher at a private school in Maryland, described it this way: "I look at this job as a vocation, not as a career. I really think that the work that I'm doing has eternal consequences." ( Education Week , March 29, 2000) Private schools are wonderful places in which to teach. They offer caring, orderly, safe, and nurturing environments; they emphasize the education of the whole child; they insist on academic excellence; and they treat teachers as professionals, giving them considerable autonomy and independence in matters of instruction. The disciplined environment, rigorous curriculum, caring communities, and high expectations private schools provide make them some of the most effective schools in the country. Teachers in private schools can spend their time doing what they are supposed to be doing: teaching.

Assessing Teaching Effectiveness
Please offer your ideas on what constitutes effective teaching. This brief survey is part of a project to evaluate seven university-wide items that would provide a core to all instruments used at SFSU to assess students' opinions of teaching effectiveness. Colleges, departments, and individual faculty would add addit ional items to the student feedback form to provide teaching effectiveness information unique to their own programs or teaching approaches. The project is a collaborative effort between the Office of Academic Affairs and the Academic Senate. Please participate and provide anonymous feedback by entering your views below.

Interpreting Aesop's Fables
to Teach Values
by Barbara Hailey (2 September 2001) One problem in education is finding a way to teach values to children without getting into any specific religion. Re-telling classic stories with a modern twist is a way to help solve that problem. Using Aesop's Fables is one good example. Questions you may have include:
  • Is there a need for such material? Why use classic tales? What is the teaching philosophy?
This lesson will answer those questions. There is a mini-quiz at the end of the lesson.
Need for values
My background is in theatreperforming and later producing stage productions. For a number of years I had a children's theatre, directing and producing plays by and for young people, with the objective of helping children understand themselves and preparing them for life. Many former students from my children's theatre are now teachers. A number of them said they were looking for good literature that would teach values without getting into any religious beliefs.

  • staff's regular demonstration and modelling of effective teaching; the sharp focus in lectures and, especially, workshops on specific key aspects of the teaching of literacy; and staff's good use of student teachers' previous experiences to stimulate their thinking about how pupils learn to read and write.
HEIs should share their expertise to devise effective ways of demonstrating to student teachers that good theory and good practice are inextricably inter-related. In some HEIs, there was need to ensure more overt and consistent attention to helping student teachers develop their understanding of the role of language in learning their subject and effective ways of teaching pupils to read and write within it. Opportunities were sometimes missed to help student teachers see how significant language dimensions in activities and assessment assignments were related to effective teaching in a subject. However, this issue was raised by enough school staff with experience of supporting student teachers to suggest that the HEIs should consider how best to meet the need for more detailed information, possibly using print materials and/or web site facilities. However, in several institutions there were student teachers whose own command of language was limited. These students needed more proactive guidance and support from the HEI on where and how to find help.

Regular Inservice days keep our teachers abreast of new, effective teaching methods and current research. Important links Principles
http://www.dyslexia-inst.org.uk/teach.htm
The Dyslexia Institute's 27 centres, located throughout the UK, and more than 125 outposts and in-school units provide specialist teaching for children and adults. Our teachers receive considerable in-service training to keep them at the 'leading edge'. Lessons are normally for one to three hours each week, taken on the same or different days, depending on the age and needs of the student. Two (Duo lessons) or three (Trio lessons) students will usually be working in the room, each following his or her own individual programme. Sometimes they will be working with the teacher, and sometimes doing practice work on their own, using a variety of aids to assist their learning, including computers. Many centres also offer study skills groups, adult groups and mathematics lessons. There is widespread agreement that teaching for dyslexic children and adults should be:
  • STRUCTURED - so reading and spelling make sense.
  • CUMULATIVE - to build up skills gradually.
  • MULTI-SENSORY - using sight, sound and touch.
