The U.S. Department of Education and Student Financial Aid for Distance Education: An Update. ERIC Digest.
Since the mid-1990s, there has been a boom in the number of U.S. colleges and universities providing courses and degree programs via distance educationeducation or training courses delivered to off-campus locations via audio, live or prerecorded video, or computer technologies, including both synchronous and asynchronous instruction (Lewis, Snow, Farris, and Levin, 1999, pp. vi, 2). Between 1995 and 1998, enrollments in distance education classes more than doubled, reaching 1,632, 350, and this rapid growth is expected to continue (U.S. Dept. of Education, 2001, June 25). This virtual explosion in distance education has piqued the interest of parents, students, distance education providers, and federal officials in the rules governing the U.S. Department of Education's distribution of federal student financial aid for distance learning. Under the current federal student aid programs (Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended), the bulk of student aid is awarded to a college or university's resident students; there are a number of statutory and regulatory provisions that limit the eligibility of distance education students to receive financial assistance (U.S. Dept. of Education, 1999, June 25).

... TAFE NSW for the New Manufacturing
Recent changes in the dynamics of manufacturing and engineering have prompted TAFE NSW to renew its commitment to revitalizing skill development for the manufacturing and engineering sector. Two new research reports have redefined the vision of TAFE NSW challenging it to embrace workforce development in partnership with industry building a vibrant and appropriately skilled 'new' manufacturing. Our Policies
The revised "Our Policies" site has been established. It gives users access to version controlled DET policy documents. The Department is progressively adding documents to this site. Users are invited to provide feedback about the site or its contents. Better Learning in Smaller Classes
A report on the trial of smaller class sizes in 63 NSW public schools has found that children in those classes are learning faster, better behaved and more confident. The report - by Professor Bob Meyenn of Charles Sturt University - found 95 percent of teachers involved in the trial in K-2 classes believed children were learning to read and write faster. New Structure
Ten new educational regions are to be established as part of a major refocusing of the NSW Department of Education and Training.
