    History
The history of pre-Inca Ecuador is lost in a misty tangle of time and legend, and the earliest historical details date back only as far as the 11th century AD. It is commonly believed that Asian nomads reached the South American continent by about 12,000 BC and were later joined by Polynesian colonizers. Centuries of tribal expansion, warfare and alliances resulted in the relatively stable Duchicela lineage, which ruled more or less peacefully for about 150 years until the arrival of the Incas around 1450 AD. Despite fierce opposition, the conquering Incas soon held the region, helped by strong leadership and policies of intermarriage. War over the inheritance of the new Inca kingdom weakened and divided the region on the eve of the arrival of the Spanish invaders.

    HISTORY
Archaeological evidence, indicates the presence of indigenous people in Ecuador for many thousands of years before the expansion of the Incas from Peru in the 1400s. It is generally accepted that the earliest inhabitants were Asian nomads who crossed what is now known as the Bering Strait some 25,000 years ago and began reaching the South American continent by about 12,000 BC. It is believed that several thousand years later, trans-Pacific colonization by the island dwellers of Polynesia added to the population. Although Stone Age tools found in the Quito area have been dated to 9000 BC, the oldest signs of a more developed culture date back to 3200 BC. These belong to the Valdivia period and consist mainly of ceramics, especially small figurines, found in the central coastal area of Ecuador. Examples of these can be seen in the major museums of Quito and Guayaquil.

    http://www.usaid.gov/ec/history.htm
USAID Mission to Ecuador Our History The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) supports the economic and social development of Ecuador since 1942. On November 20, 2002, the Mission accomplished 60 years of technical and economical cooperation in Ecuador. Many years of collaborative cooperation for the development of Ecuador, where USAID and its former agencies (Point Four, Inter-American Services, Alliance for Progress) have had the rewarding opportunity to provide an important economical support for the strategies and projects that Ecuador, through public and private entities, has been implementing to reach its social and economic development target.
In response to the priorities established by Ecuador, the support of USAID has been especially focussed during these 60 years towards policy dialogue, institutional strengthening, technology transfer in sectors such as health, agriculture, education, housing, promotion of trade and investment, and most recently for the conservation of biodiversity, support of democratic systems and institutions, reduction of poverty, the Ecuador-Peru Peace Treaty, and the Northern Development Program.
The bilateral Programs of Technical and Economic Assistance from the government of the United States to the government of Ecuador officially began on November 20, 1942 with the signing of agreements for public health and agricultural development projects. Between 1942 and 1960, the United States´ program was known as "Point Four" and was focussed on the health, agriculture, and educational sectors and the development of small businesses and handicrafts.

We approach them from the sky, the sphere which they do not control ... We are offering them unknown territory for known, a foreign land instead of home, dependency for self sufficiency, subjection to outside powers instead of resistance, and hunger where once there was plenty.
Quote from a Missionary, reflecting on his life
For most of us, as individuals, life is defined by family and village; but on a grander scale, human migration, trade and the interpenetration of cultures are as old as the human experience. Globalization is not a phenomenon of the last decade, it is the human condition; as population increases, we need more room; the powerful relentlessly subdue the weak. Mankind has followed this universal pattern throughout history - whether in Europe, Asia, Africa, or the Americas. It is happening even now, in Amazonia; outsiders arrive, engulf, overwhelm, and consume, leaving a trail of irreversible destruction behind. It is a natural evolutionary process; it seems inevitable, and unstoppable.

    http://www.ncf.carleton.ca/ecuador/history.htm
Ecuador takes its name from the equator an imaginary line that divides the planet in northern and southern hemispheresthat runs 10 kilometers north of Quito, the capital city of the country. In 1563, King Felipe II was the first to establish the limits of the Spanish possessions around the equatorial line, giving birth to the Real Audiencia de Quito (which became a part of the Virreinato de Nueva Granada). Quito was the name given by the Spanish conquerors to the area inhabited by the "Quitus" the indigenous peoples originally from the Northern part of Ecuador. In the mid 18th century, a geodesic mission was sent by the French Academy of Sciences from Paris to the Real Aundiencia de Quito. When the mission got back to Europe, they referred to the area as the "Lands of the Equator." Following the Battle of Pichincha, on May 24th, 1822, Ecuador gained its independence from Spain and became, with Colombia and Venezuela, a part of the union of states liberated by Simon Bolivar, known as "Grancolombia." Since the dissolution of the union in 1830, Ecuador has become a separate political state. Over the years, Ecuador has alternated between liberal, moderate, and conservative governments, interspersed with periods of military rule. A political predisposition to moderation has for the most part kept even the extremist governments law-minded.
