Ecuador's Geography
Ecuador is a very geographically varied country. It is about the same area of the US state of Nevada, or New Zealand, and a bit larger than the United Kingdom. It straddles the equator (for which it was named) on the West, Pacific Ocean, coast of South America. It borders two countries: Peru to the south and east, and Colombia to the north.
There are three geographical regions: the coastal lowlands, mountain highlands and eastern jungle lowlands. The coastal lowlands used to be heavily forested, but much of that is gone now, due to agriculture and shrimp farms.
The backbone of Ecuador is the Andean highlands down the center of the country. The highest peak is Chimborazo (6310 metres; 20,700 ft.), but the most famous is the Cotopaxi volcano, just south of Quito. Quito is the world's second highest capital behind La Paz, Bolivia, at an altitude of 2850 metres (9350 ft.). The highlands contain many different towns and markets to visit.
The jungle, or Oriente as it is called by Ecuadorians, forms the upper basin of the Amazon jungle. There are many virgin rainforest areas, and the large Amazon River tributary, Rio Napo, cuts through the jungle. Oil exploitation and increased population are threats to this once unsettled area.

Geography
Ecuador is one of the smaller countries in South America. Located on the west coast and straddling the equator, Ecuador has a total area of about 280,000 square kilometers, which includes the Galápagos Islands. Roughly the size of the state of Colorado, Ecuador encompasses a wide range of natural formations and climates, from the desertlike southern coast to the snowcapped peaks of the Andes Mountains to the plains of the Amazon River Basin. Ecuador is bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Colombia, and on the east and south by Peru. Ecuador continues to contest the boundary with Peru, which was established by the Protocol of Peace, Friendship, and Boundaries (Rio Protocol) of 1942 and ceded to Peru a large portion of territory east of the Andes. Perhaps the most famous visitor to Ecuador's Galapagos Islands was Charles Darwin. Aboard the HMS Beagle on a five-year voyage, Charles Darwin, at age 26, visited the Galapagos archipelago in 1835 and spent a total of five weeks there studying its natural surroundings. It was not until 1859 that his monumental work, "Origin of Species," was published. In 1854, Herman Melville wrote on his impressions about the Galapagos Islands: "Take 5 and 20 heaps of cinders dumped here and there in an outside city lot: imagine them magnified into mountains and the vacant lot the sea and you will have a fit idea of the general aspect of the Encantadas." Known as the Sistine Chapel of South America, the Cathedral La Compania of Quito, Ecuador was built by Jesuits. Construction of this magnificent cathedral began in 1605 and was completed in 1768. The front chancel is gilded with over seven tons of gold. Galapagos Islands/Ecuador Book Selections

The Pinta island subspecies of Galapagos Giant Tortoise (Geochelone elephantopus abingdoni) are survived by a single male named "Lonesome George". Attempts to mate Lonesome George with female tortoises of the closest subspecies have not been successful. The Galapagos have lived in virtual isolation for millions of years. In total, they consist of 61 islands and islets, with 13 main islands. Seeming like shadows upon the sea from one another, the 13 main islands are Baltra, Espanola, Fernandina, Floreana, Genovesa, Isabela, Marchena, Pinta, Pinzon, San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Santiago. The small town of Otavalo, in Ecuador, is famous for its Saturday Indian market, which dates back to pre-Inca times. The market is a colorful, festive affair, and the Otaveleños who host it do so in their traditional dress. Otaveleños use traditional backstrap looms to create their clothes and tapestries. Their work is so much in demand these days that the Indians have opened shops across Ecuador and now sell directly to galleries and stores in the US and Europe.

Ecuador's Geography
Highly Unique in the World

The Republic of Ecuador straddles the Equator, and is bordered by Colombia to the north and northeast, and Peru to the south and southeast. Although it is one of the smallest countries in South America (about the size of Nevada), Ecuador is one of the
most geographically and ecologically diverse countries in the world. Endowed with a dramatic topography, Ecuador features five distinct ecological "zones" with unique climates, vegetation, and wildlife. Without leaving the country, you can experience the rainforest, the mountains, and the seacoast!
Five million years ago the mountain range now named the Andes appeared, dividing Ecuador into two low forested plains and a narrower, intermediate band bordered by the "Avenue of the Volcanoes." About the same time, a cluster of islands were forming 1,000 Km. off Ecuador's Pacific coast. The Galapagos archipelago is comprised of 13 large islands, six smaller ones and over 40 islets. Together they cover 7,500 sq. Km. Most are south of the equator where several marine currents converge. To see a map of Ecuador
