Culture
Ecuador has a deeply ingrained cultural heritage, the first agricultural villages and ceramic production of the Americas being associated with what is now coastal Ecuador. Quito came to be the northern capital of the Inca empire, the largest political unit of pre-Columbian America. Ecuador's colonial religious architecture is predominantly baroque, although domestic architecture tends to be simple and elegant, comprising whitewashed verandahed houses built around a central courtyard. Traditional Andean music has a distinctive haunting quality based on an unusual pentatonic scale. Wind and percussion instruments, including bamboo panpipes and flutes, create the foundation of the sound. Local crafts include fine examples of basketry, leather work, woodcarving, weaving, ceramics and jewellery. The most importand ecuadorian artist of the 20th century is Oswaldo Guayasamin (1919-1999). With his unique style he has still a great influence to artists in hole South america. The predominant religion is Roman Catholic, but there is a scattering of other Christian faiths. Indigenous Ecuadorians, while outwardly Catholic, tend to blend Catholicism with their traditional beliefs. Spanish is the main language, although most highland Indians are bilingual, with Quechua being their preferred language and Spanish their second tongue. Several small lowland groups speak their own languages. English is understood in the best hotels and in airline offices and travel agencies, but it's of little use elsewhere.

History
The history of pre-Inca Ecuador is lost in a misty tangle of time and legend, and the earliest historical details date back only as far as the 11th century AD. It is commonly believed that Asian nomads reached the South American continent by about 12,000 BC and were later joined by Polynesian colonizers. Centuries of tribal expansion, warfare and alliances resulted in the relatively stable Duchicela lineage, which ruled more or less peacefully for about 150 years until the arrival of the Incas around 1450 AD. Despite fierce opposition, the conquering Incas soon held the region, helped by strong leadership and policies of intermarriage. War over the inheritance of the new Inca kingdom weakened and divided the region on the eve of the arrival of the Spanish invaders.

    Ecuador History and Culture
History Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro invaded Ecuador, home of the Inca empire, in 1532 and controlled it within two years. In 1822, the colonists revolted, and Ecuador gained freedom as part of Gran Colombia, eight years later, it realized sole independence as Ecuador. Culture Ecuador is a country of contrasting cultural patterns. The Native Americans of the highlands, the descendants of tribes conquered by the Inca, still play traditional Native American songs on ancient-style flutes and panpipes.

    Nature and Culture Trips
Ecuador is a relatively small country by South American standards but an immensely rich one in natural diversity and cultural heritage
The country is per square meter the most biological diverse (for more, click to our information.biodiversity section of the web) in the world, e.g. 1600 birds make Ecuador their home, almost double of birds found in all Europe or the North American continent. The Andean highlands, tropical cloud- and rainforests, Pacific coast and the unique Galapagos islands, all with their distinct fauna and flora await you here.
If you are more interested in people and their history and culture (for a virtual sightseeing tour of attractions, click to information.exhibitions.gallery ), Ecuador offers you as well many interesting sites. In museums throughout the country you may admire the cultures of old Indian civilizations , famous for their pottery and metalworks. Also a few remains of the Inca presence are still to be seen here. And with the arrival of the Spaniards, another rich but foreign culture imposed their ideas and mixed with the existing one. Old colonial towns with their squares and churches bear witness to that event.

brief but honest picture of Ecuador

This short book packs in a great deal of honest and accurate information about the beautiful, complex, culturally rich, and ecologically threatened country of Ecuador. It is not a tourist guide, but recommended for prospective visitors who want to understand the culture and politics of Ecuador, and understand it quickly. It is especially valuable for its summary of the destructive effects of the petroleum industry on the ecology and economy of the country, and for its its brief but accurate introduction to the country's powerful indigenous movement. It gives a sense of the country's cultural riches, and has some great color photos.
For those who want good solid information
If you are looking for a good overview of Ecuador without all of the tourist related fluff, this is the book for you. It briefly covers topics from Ecuador's early history right up to present day politics, people and enviroment.

Having bought this book in anticipation of a trip to Ecuador, I am having second thoughts based on the negative impression with which I'm left after reading this book. Although he relates fond memories and favorite foods and regions, it's not clear if he really likes it there. That said, however, Crowder's book is factual(if not a little outdated since it's now 2 yrs old).
As a seasoned traveller to Mexico and Guatemala, I would expect some of the cultural differences (concept of time, casual bribery to get anything accomplished, trouble with visas, etc.), but he offered very little, if anything, to make me actually want to visit Ecuador. Though the book does contain a lot of information for anyone who wants to do business in Ecuador, it's not terribly well written (most business books aren't imho) and certainly not written for the average tourist. Of course, that can be a good thing if you follow the path that he took. Crowder DID live there, though I found it strange that even with an Ecuadorian wife, he mentions that his son doesn't speak Spanish. Makes me wonder how much of Ecuador he really got to know aside from his business ventures.
