It builds repsonsibility and appreciation for providing meals that are nutritional and satisfying. I choose up to 24 different recipes that as a class we follow during the course of the year. I try to coordinate it with what I am doing academically, be it in language arts or social studies. I have a two burner electric unit avaliable along with electric frying pans, and even a barbeque grill when weather permits. I also have a small refrigerator in my classroom to store perishables that are needed for any of the recipes. it is a special treat for my students to collaboratively plan meals that we all share. make sure you are aware of any food alllergies that your students may have."

There is a close tie between my experimental economics research and my teaching philosophy. Learning is too often passive in economics, with a vast difference between abstract (but powerful) theoretical models and the busy nature of everyday economic activity. Claims about the efficiency of decentralized market-based economic activity fall flat when justified by mathematical proofs based on strong assumptions, like infinite numbers of traders. Putting students into the roles of market traders and strategic decision makers lets them see market efficiencies for themselves, alongside other experiments that reveal the large potential inefficiencies of non-market allocations (e.g., "rent-seeking") and market failures. These experiments increase the confidence of both students and their instructors in what is being taught and learned.

Economics Department of Economics Undergraduate Degrees Postgraduate Studies Centre for Economic Reform and Transformation (CERT) Economics Seminars Overview Economics is concerned with studying some of the biggest issues facing the world today : unemployment, taxation, trade flows, third world development, pollution, and political and economics restructuring in former communist countries are some of the problems on which economists at Heriot-Watt University are working. To do their work effectively, economists need to be able to understand the complex nature of the economics problems which face late 20 th century societies. This is what we equip our students to do. Our main objectives are to teach our students:
  • t o think analytically and critically to take complex problems and reduce them to their key components to use up-to-date theoretical ideas as a framework of understanding to use statistical and econometric techniques to test theoretical models for their adequacy as representations of real world problems to think strategically when put into situations of potential conflict to communicate ideas effectively both verbally and in writing
With these skills, economics graduates are well equipped for a wide variety of careers. Heriot-Watt economics graduates are highly successful in finding jobs in banking, insurance, investment analysis, accountancy, manufacturing industry, the civil service, the armed forces, the police and even undertaking! An increasing proportion of our graduates go on to take higher degrees at home or abroad where they find themselves adequately prepared for advanced study.

Welcome to the BYU Economics Department
The Department of Economics at Brigham Young University focuses on providing a first-class undergraduate education in the discipline of economics. The core courses are taught using a calculus-based approach. Many of our students pursue graduate work in Business, Law, Medicine, and Economics.
The Discipline
Economics examines how societies choose to allocate scarce resources among competing uses. A broad range of contemporary policy issues are studied in fields such as: food, agriculture, and natural resource economics; economic development and growth, international trade and finance, economic history, the organization of industries, the development and efficiency of law, business cycles, labor markets, and public and private finance.
Career Opportunities Professional economists basically work in three fields. Some work in business, others in government, and some choose academic careers. The lifestyles of these groups vary greatly, making the decision of which career to adopt an important one.

TEACHING THE SOCIAL ECONOMICS WAY OF THINKING: SELECTED PAPERS FROM THE NINTH WORLD CONGRESS OF SOCIAL ECONOMICS
INTRODUCTION
Teaching the Social Economics Way of Thinking is unique in that it is the first time a large number of papers on this subject has been published as a collection. Our working premise in calling for papers on this theme has been that social economics makes a real and substantial difference in how economic affairs are understood and how economics is taught. Our approach has been direct and simple: we asked social economists who have been teaching for some time what they do which in effect sets off their teaching from the teaching of others who adhere to the conventional paradigm of contemporary economics. Our collection is organized around and presented in eight major sections in the following order:
  • premises employed in economics the masters on the social economics way of thinking diagnostic tools employed in economics teaching methods teaching standard courses from a social economics perspective teaching economics and ethics team teaching economics and theology/religion evolution of courses taught from a social economics viewpoint
With one exception each section contains at least two essays. The section on teaching standard courses from a social economics perspective covers the following courses: development economics, environmental economics, health economics, industrial organization, international economics, labor economics, money and banking, and principles. This section accounts for 18 of the 34 essays in the collection.

Motivation
During a conference held at Kiev in 1992 first contacts between Dnipropetrovsk State University and the University of KoblenzLandau were established. The proceedings of the conference were edited by Klaus G. Troitzsch and published at Koblenz-Landau University in 1993. Two of the Ukrainian organizers of this conference visited Koblenz in the autumn of 1993. The cooperation is based on joint interests in modeling economic and other social processes, especially before the background of the transformation processes to be observed in the Ukraine and other states in East Central Europe and of the former Soviet Union. During the last 15 months, the idea was born to develop a curriculum enabling graduate and postgraduate students of computer science, economics and social science to gain the necessary experience to do research and teaching in the still developing field of simulation in and for economics and other social sciences. The University of KoblenzLandau has been offering courses in social science applications of computer science for the last seventeen years. Among the courses offered, there is much

Comments:
"I decided to teach high school. The only way I could move here was to teach world history and economics. And I thought, 'I can do it. I'll get through a couple of years and then I'll get rid of the economics and I'll be left with the world history.' And once I started teaching economics that's what I ended up loving. And so now I'm trying to get rid of the world history so that I can have all economics."

Introduction
This paper draws on my experience of teaching economics to European Studies students since 1990, and, more recently, my experience of teaching economics to students on a range of under-graduate programmes (note 0) . I will not focus on one module in particular, but on two case studies. Both I believe help make economics accessible to non-subject specialists, integrate a variety of economic perspectives and encourage critical thinking. The first case study will look at the use of computer-assisted learning on a first-year module entitled 'Introduction to Globalisation'. The second case study examines how comparative analysis combined with a historical-institutionalist perspective can be relevant for European Studies students.

Economics is:
a) about balancing your checkbook.
b) the study of how capitalists exploit the poor and rape the earth.
c) not very nice.
d) dismal.
Just as environmental science is no longer taught as science, high school economics turns to mush when taught by a social studies teacher who neither understands nor likes the subject.
"Nobody is comfortable teaching straight economics," says Tim Taylor, a Macalester economics professor. "You get Inequality and Poverty - how capitalism is bad or Globalization how trade is bad."
Or Environmental Factoids Taken Out of Context, which could have been the title of my daughter's not-much-economics class. In many states, high school students are required to take a semester of econ or a class labeled "Economics," to be precise. These classes are taught by social studies teachers who've taken, on average, two college econ courses. And forgotten most of what they learned.

Occupational Outlook HandbookEconomists

The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes information on economics as a career: What Is Economics?
Let's start with what economics isn't. Economics isn't a meal ticket to make lots of money in the stock market, although economics helps you understand how stock markets and other markets work. Economics also isn't a business degree, although economics teaches important business skills. Economics, first and foremost, is a social science. As such, economics helps to explain the mysteries of how people and society operate. Economics is defined as the study of how people choose to use their scarce resources in an attempt to satisfy their unlimited wants. In other words, we have unlimited possibilities in life to do whatever we want, but we are limited by the resources we have to do these things. Think, for example, why you don't own a ferrari or a porsche (if you do, congratulations). You probably can't afford to purchase these expensive automobiles, or even if you can, this is not the best use of your money. You may want a ferrari, and in fact there is no prohibition against your buying a ferrari. But you don't have the resourcesnamely, moneyto buy a ferrari.
