  • to protect the money from thieves and to make more money by getting interest from the bank.

Tropical rain forests are the world's richest forests. Rain forests are home to over 50% of the world's plants and animal species, supply the ingredients for 25% of our prescription drugs, provide 40% of the world's oxygen, and have 70% of the plants used to make cancer treatment drugs. Rain forests are being cut down for many reasons including using the lumber for building and furniture making and using the land beneath the rain forest for farming and mining.

Economics projects Roosters to Robots Old MacDonald ... Economics Roosters to Robots Lesson Plans from Writers around the World As more countries converge towards market-oriented economies, the need for economic education has become increasingly apparent to elementary and secondary teachers in those nations. Publications of the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE) have been well received by educators from a wide range of countries. The active-learning approach, emphasized by the NCEE network of state councils and centers for economic education, holds strong appeal for many educators. Economic education that uses active learning has expanded from the United States to emerging economies in the former Soviet Union, eastern and central Europe, and the Baltic states. Educational materials created for schools in the United States, however, are not always appropriate for use in other countries because of language, economic, and cultural differences. Although economic educators in those countries have written textbooks, a need for relevant active-learning lesson plans was recognized. In 1996, we had the pleasure to participate in the development of a NCEE publication to help teachers write better lessons, Connecting the Pieces: Building a Better Economics Lesson. The publication shows potential writers how to identify the economics appropriate for K-12 students; integrate economics into other subject matter; include thinking skills, active-learning instructional models, and assessment into a lesson; format lessons; and conduct pilot tests.

    UNIT II: LESSON 4
    LESSON 4
    WHAT ARE
    THE ECONOMIC
    FUNCTIONS OF
    GOVERNMENT?
    INTRODUCTION
In order to ensure and support economic free-dom as well as political freedom, the founders of our nation envisioned a very limited role for the government in economic affairs. In a market economy, such as the one established by our Constitution, most economic decisions are made by individual buyers and sellers, not by the government. Economists, however, identify six major functions of governments in market economies. Governments provide the legal and social framework, maintain competition, provide public goods and services, redistribute income, correct for externalities, and stabilize the economy. Citizens, interest groups, and political leaders disagree about how large a scope of activities the government should perform within each of these functions. Over time, as our society and economy have changed, government activities within each of these functions have expanded. OBJECTIVES
    • Identify the six economic functions of government
    • Classify examples of government actions and policies within various economic functions
    • Identify and evaluate two different positions on the role of government in the economy
    LESSON DESCRIPTION
The six economic functions of government are presented to students. Students categorize a series of newspaper headlines as examples of each of the six functions and locate additional examplesi n current newspapers and newsmagazines. The lesson concludes with a discussion of how limited the economic functions of government should be.
