MII's Mission
The Mineral Information Institute (MII) is a national 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating youth about the science of minerals and other natural resources, and about their importance in our every day lives. Each year MII works with interested professional and scientific associations, and various government and education agencies, to help classroom teachers develop materials that are directly usable by teachers in a variety of subjects and a multitude of grade levels. All programs require updating and maintenance to ensure their continuing value and use in the classroom. MII will provide that and will distribute those programs that merit continued use. Supported by corporations, foundations, scientific associations, and individuals from across the nation, MII distributes these materials free to classroom teachers to supplement existing curricula. More than 29,000 K-12 classroom teachers in all 50 states, several Canadian provinces, and foreign countries receive teaching materials each year from MII. MII is supported solely by donations. ... Help Make Way for Ducklings
by Robert McCloskey It's not easy for duck parents to find a safe place to raise their ducklings, but during a rest stop in Boston's Public Garden, Mr. and Mrs. Mallard think they just might have found the perfect spot. When Mrs. Mallard and her eight ducklings are stuck at a busy street in downtown Boston, their policeman friend Michael rushes in to stop traffic and make way for them. This classic won the Caldecott Award in 1942.

You will then match specific items identified in the story with their category of productive resource and then predict what incentives might influence the characters in the future because of the experiences in the story. What are Incentives? In this lesson, you will identify incentives at home and school, identify positive and negative incentives, and discuss which incentives influence your own behavior. That's Not Fair! How do we Share? This lesson has students explore a variety of ways to share, particularly when an obvious solution is not apparent. How much is that Doggy?

This page is dedicated to any and all US Government teachers who wish to find ideas that can be used in their own US Government classrooms. Some of these plans might be appropriate for use in US History or other Social Studies classes. These plans follow a standard lesson plan outline, but a teacher may want to choose from one or more sections of the lessons themselves.
One lesson plan may contain a number of activities, and one plan may be implemented over a number of days, almost as though it were a "unit plan." When possible, quizzes and answer may be posted for your use as well. It is my sincere hope that you might be able to use some of these ideas. I am also ready to post any of your ideas, so feel free to send them to me! If you wish to collaborate with me and my classes on any one project, just

    Altruism: Meeting Society's Needs
. In the U.S. today, many people's fundamental needs are not being met. Food, shelter, medical care, and safety from violence are elusive for increasing numbers of people. In a spirit of altruism, individuals, faith-based organizations and secular groups undertake humanitarian efforts to meet these people's basic needs and in the process discover that other, more profound needs are being met for the server as well as the served.
