Heralding ICT enabled Knowledge Societies
way forward for the Developing countries Vikas Nath
Inlaks Scholar London School of Economics (2000-1) http://www.vikasnath.org/
knownet@knownetweaver.org
April 2000 The info-technological revolution, led by advances in information and communication technology, is re-structuring the global social economic equations - shifting from income divide to knowledge divide. The revolution on one hand is spearheading the growth of knowledge societies in developed countries and has aroused much interest among civil society, markets and the agents of change. On the other hand, more than 850 million people in developing countries are excluded from a wide range of information and knowledge. The poor in developing countries remain much isolated - economically, socially and culturally from the burgeoning information and progress in the arts, science and technology. Little is known about the barriers to evolution and growth of knowledge societies in developing countries inspite of advancements in the use of information and communication technologies and the issue needs to better understood to enable developing countries to leapfrog ahead.
We stand at the dawn of the new millennium. The millennium ushers with it a world of greater inter-connectivity, accelerating flow of data, and shrinking time and national boundaries. The force fueling this rapid transformation of isolated islands to inter-connected superhighways is Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Over 300 million people are now wired in around the globe and around one billion will be online by 2005. Rapidly falling costs of communications and computing and the extraordinary penetration and accessibility of World Wide Web is turning the world into a global village.

Global Economy If G8 means business, invite China to the table
This week's summit of the Group of Eight leading industrial powers, like similar recent meetings, seems likely to focus on security issues. If the G8 wants to face up to the lengthy global economic agenda, it's time to give face to the world's supercharged growth engine. - Gary LaMoshi (Jun 8, '04)
Those swinging PCs

More than four years after Y2K, many companies, particularly in Asia, are again replacing their PCs and archaic operating systems in an effort to build up their information infrastructure and meet new challenges in globalization. Add to this a surge in global demand plus strong economic growth patterns, and the PC industry appears to be on the upswing. - Tony Sitathan (Jun 8, '04)

Global Economy
US dollar hegemony has got to go

By Henry C K Liu
There is an economics-textbook myth that foreign-exchange rates are determined by supply and demand based on market fundamentals. Economics tends to dismiss socio-political factors that shape market fundamentals that affect supply and demand.
The current international finance architecture is based on the US dollar as the dominant reserve currency, which now accounts for 68 percent of global currency reserves, up from 51 percent a decade ago. Yet in 2000, the US share of global exports (US$781.1 billon out of a world total of $6.2 trillion) was only 12.3 percent and its share of global imports ($1.257 trillion out of a world total of $6.65 trillion) was 18.9 percent. World merchandise exports per capita amounted to $1,094 in 2000, while 30 percent of the world's population lived on less than $1 a day, about one-third of per capita export value.
Ever since 1971, when US president Richard Nixon took the dollar off the gold standard (at $35 per ounce) that had been agreed to at the Bretton Woods Conference at the end of World War II, the dollar has been a global monetary instrument that the United States, and only the United States, can produce by fiat. The dollar, now a fiat currency, is at a 16-year trade-weighted high despite record US current-account deficits and the status of the US as the leading debtor nation. The US national debt as of April 4 was $6.021 trillion against a gross domestic product (GDP) of $9 trillion.

The Cotton Industry: Its Growth and Impact, 1600-1935
Introduction
The cotton industry has been widely recognized as the 'leading sector' in the industrialization of several of the world's major economies, and more particularly of Great Britain, the country that first experienced an 'industrial revolution'. Its importance was recognized and widely discussed from the early years of the factory system in spinning and so became the subject of a large literature ranging from pamphlets, journal articles and ephemera through to works of encyclopaedic comprehension and permanent value. The present collection of nine volumes is intended to represent the best of the publications that have stood the test of time. The phrase 'as far as possible' is used to acknowledge the fact that, despite the huge bibliography on cotton, there are several important areas of the subject on which little has been written, or what has been published is inadequate in one way or another. And of course, even the 'classics' of the subject have their limitations and of themselves take no account of more recent research. This introduction will therefore serve to indicate some gaps in our knowledge that remain, and some of the points at which the volumes reproduced need to be updated to offer more rounded understanding. These few remarks will be complimented by a short bibliography and some references for further reading at the end of this Introduction.

HOME PROGRAMS FACULTY RESEARCH ... GRAD STUDENTS The Food and Resource Economics (FRE) group (formerly Agricultural Economics) uses rigorous tools of economic analysis to examine applied problems in the general area of food markets (e.g., trade and regulated markets, food demand analysis, food safety and biotechnology) and the economics of renewable resources and the environment (e.g.,trade and the environment, valuation of natural resource amenities). The recent appointment of Timothy Beatty as a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Food Market Analysis, and simultaneous creation of a data analysis lab (through Canada Foundation for Innovation funding), has resulted in a particular strength in empirical analysis within this group. The strength and unique nature of our program stems from cross-campus collaborations.
  • Faculty of Agricultural Sciences : Our graduate programs are interdisciplinary in nature. Professors and students work in close collaborations with colleagues in other graduate programs within the Faculty. These include: Animal Science, Food Science, Human Nutrition, Landscape Architecture, Plant Science and Soil Science.

They have made significant, hard-won progress on many fronts (like broad-based education), and some countries are blessed with abundant natural resources (oil, natural gas, phosphates, and other minerals, for example). In general, however, Middle Eastern economies have faced significant obstacles to successful development. One major obstacle has been Western efforts to control the region's resources. Other challenges include rapidly increasing populations, uneven distribution of resources like water and oil, protracted armed conflicts and the resultant high military spending, rapid urbanization, and incorporation into a global economy. How has the Middle East tried to deal with these challenges?
