Politics is the control of the economy. History, when accurately and fully recorded, is that story. In most textbooks and classrooms, not only are these three fields of study separated, but they are further compartmentalized into separate subfields, obscuring the close interconnections between them. J.W. Smith, The World's Wasted Wealth 2, ( Institute for Economic Democracy , 1994), p. 22. This section attempts to highlight some of the misconceptions and unfairness in the current model for global trading, economics and the current form of overly corporate-led globalization. It attempts to provide a look at how this all has an impact on people around the world, especially the developing nations.

Introduction The emergence of an information economy and globalization have been observed and discussed for decades, whether in the context of the worldwide distribution of films, television shows, and music, or the expansion of multinational corporations and global brands such as McDonald's, Coca-Cola, MTV, and Globo. The Internet and its rapid growth worldwide has caused a great deal of excitement, not least because the net seems to have the power to realize the metaphor of the 'global village' popularized by Marshall McLuhan in the 1960s (McLuhan, 1996). Tens of millions of people can now communicate directly with each other . Of course, the global telephone network already reaches perhaps a billion people, and television events such as the 1998 World Cup reach far more than that. But the true power of the net is not just being able to engage in more intensive one-on-one communication, but in flexible, variable, one-to-many, and many-to-many, forms of communication. In Internet terms, every sender is also a receiver. And vice versa.

NEPAD Misunderstands The Politics Of International Economics
    Africa News
    June 14, 2002
In April this year the British charity, Oxfam, launched its three-year campaign on fair trade. To back this campaign, it issued a study whose title is suggestive of the hypocrisy of the developed countries - Rigged Rules And Double Standards: Trade, Globalisation, And The Fight Against Poverty. The report has been rightly criticised in some non-governmental organisation (NGO) circles for being too focused on providing a market-based solution to the condition of poverty of the poor countries. Nonetheless, coming from a respected Western mega-NGO, it is an important document. The study provides proof of the double standards applied by the Western countries, and on the manipulation of international trade rules, especially in the framework of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). This should provide good reason for African (as indeed other Third World) countries to take serious note of what is happening around them, and wake up from the illusions they nurse, such as the New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad), for example. Nepad is fundamentally flawed in its premises and assumptions. The strategy it offers is unrealistic. It is based on the illusion that it is in the interest of the developed countries to bale out Africa with enormous doses of foreign direct investments (FDIs) if only Africa puts its house in order in the economic and political governance front as directed by the developed countries.
