International Economics Global Markets and International Competition Henry Thompson World Scientific Publishing* Description Introduction desk copy order hardback ISBN 981-02-4344-8 $70 paperback ISBN 981-02-4453-3 $38 This text presents the international economics of production, trade, and investment based on constant cost, neoclassical, and modern theories of production. Graphs, numerical examples, and exercises make the economics accessible to students with a principles background. More than 200 examples illustrate and make the theory relevant. Emphasis is on the benefits of competition, the power of international markets, and the futility of strategic trade policy. international economics web page new ISLM chapter International Economics Global Markets and International Competition International economics describes and predicts production, trade, and investment across countries. Wages and income rise and fall with international commerce even in large rich developed economies like the US. In many countries, international economics is a matter of life and death. Economics as a field began in England in the 1700s with a debate over issues of free international commerce, and the debate continues. Domestic industries pay politicians for protection against foreign competition. This text carefully develops the foundations of international trade and investment, including constant cost, neoclassical, and modern theories of production, industrial organization, and trade. Government policies are designed to influence trade and investment for favored industries. Governments negotiate free trade and investment agreements. The success of government fiscal and monetary policies ultimately depends on international financial markets.

Economic Liberalization and Integration
Advances in communication and transportation technology, combined with free-market ideology, have given goods, services, and capital unprecedented mobility. Northern countries want to open world markets to their goods and capital and take advantage of abundant, cheap labor in the South, a policy often supported by Southern elites. They use international financial institutions and regional trade agreements to compel poor countries to "integrate" by reducing tariffs, privatizing state enterprises, and relaxing environmental and labor standards. The results have enlarged profits for investors but offered pittances to laborers, provoking a strong backlash from civil society. This page analyzes economic globalization, and examines how it might be resisted or regulated in order to promote sustainable development. Some see free trade as the best way for poor nations to grow economically, arguing against Northern protectionismespecially agriculture subsidiesthat hurts Southern economies. While increased market access could help many poor farmers and manufacturers, liberalization in no panacea for global poverty.

"I would not be the first to admit that awareness of biodiversity is still very low in relation to other key issues" said David Hillyard, Head of Corporate Programmes, Earthwatch Europe, at the launch. "We hope that this book will stimulate further companies to take action on biodiversity in Japan" pursued Naoya Furuta, Programme Officer, BDNJ. Published in 2002 with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the Handbook provides the business case for integrating biodiversity into corporate management. IUCN member BDNJ initiated and coordinated the production of this edition with the financial support of Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund (also an IUCN member) and the Japan Fund for Global Environment.
