Public Choice Theory
by Jane S. Shaw Public choice theory is a branch of economics that developed from the study of taxation and public spending. It emerged in the fifties and received widespread public attention in 1986, when James Buchanan, one of its two leading architects (the other was his colleague Gordon Tullock), was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics. Buchanan started the Center for Study of Public Choice at George Mason University, and it remains the best-known locus of public choice research. Others include Florida State University, Washington University (St. Louis), Montana State University, the California Institute of Technology, and the University of Rochester. One of the chief underpinnings of public choice theory is the lack of incentives for voters to monitor government effectively. Anthony Downs, in one of the earliest public choice books, An Economic Theory of Democracy, pointed out that the voter is largely ignorant of political issues and that this ignorance is rational. Even though the result of an election may be very important, an individual's vote rarely decides an election. Thus, the direct impact of casting a well-informed vote is almost nil; the voter has virtually no chance to determine the outcome of the election. So spending time following the issues is not personally worthwhile for the voter. Evidence for this claim is found in the fact that public opinion polls consistently find that less than half of all voting-age Americans can name their own congressional representative.

145. A Review Of Keynesian Theory
As a result, most economists abandoned monetarist theory. Friedman is also famous for a second theory, this one containing much more merit.
http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/Keynesianism.htm
A REVIEW OF KEYNESIAN THEORY
Keynesian theory is central to understanding the Great Depression. We'll review just the theory here, and reserve for other sections the opportunity to see if the events of the 1930s bear out the theory.
Keynesianism is named after John Maynard Keynes, a British economist who lived from 1883 to 1946. He was a man of many contradictions: an elitist whose economic theories would be embraced by liberals the world over; a bisexual who enjoyed a happy and lifelong marriage to a Russian ballerina; a genius with an uncanny ability to predict the future, but whose works were often badly organized and sometimes very wrong. I mention this only because many of Keynes' critics try to refute his theories by pointing to the man himself. This is worse than irrelevant, of course; such criticisms are often prejudiced.
What is not in contention is that even Keynes' critics call him the greatest and most influential economist of the 20 th century. For this reason, he is known as "the father of modern economics."
When the Great Depression hit worldwide, it fell on economists to explain it and devise a cure. Most economists were convinced that something as large and intractable as the Great Depression must have complicated causes. Keynes, however, came up with an explanation of economic slumps that was surprisingly simple. In fact, when he shared his theory and proposed solution with Franklin Roosevelt, the President is said to have dismissed them with the words: "Too easy."

Social Credit
The Social Credit movement dates from the publication of the book "Economic Democracy" by Major C.H.Douglas in 1923. In the depression years of the 1930's, it grew into a political movement under the le adership of William Aberhart: under his leadership, and later that of E.C.Manning , the bankrupt province paid off its debts, developed its natural resources, infrastructure and social services, becoming the leading province in Canada for quality of life and economic prosperity. The website of the Alberta Social Credit Party may be contacted from this page. See also my articles on Economics An "Encyclopaedia of the New Economics" in verse, by the late C. Marshall Hattersley, is also worth a visit. (c) 11/99 J.M.Hattersley - martinh@ecn.ab.ca

150. Game Theory And The Law
Review of book that applies the tools of game theory and information economics to advance our understanding of how laws work.
http://www.law.uchicago.edu/Picker/agtl/gtl.html
Game Theory and the Law
Douglas G. Baird, Robert H. Gertner and Randal C. Picker
Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press. 330 pp. Paper $24.95.
From the Book Jacket
This book is the first to apply the tools of game theory and information economics to advance our understanding of how laws work. Organized around the major solution concepts of game theory, the book shows how such well-known games as the prisoner's dilemma, the battle of the sexes, beer-quiche, and the Rubinstein bargaining game can illuminate many different kinds of legal problems. The organization of Game Theory and the Law serves to highlight the basic mechanisms at work and to lay out a natural progression in the sophistication of the games and legal problems considered. Game Theory and the Law will serve as an accessible primer on game theory for non-specialists. Many of the models and ideas it sets forth, however, are new. The authors offer new ways of thinking about problems in anti-discrimination, environmental, labor, and many other areas of law. The book makes few formal demands. The basic concepts of modern game theory are introduced without requiring the reader to know calculus, probability theory, or any other formal mathematical tools beyond simple algebra, which is used sparingly. The book also contains a comprehensive glossary of legal and economic terms, ranging from the absolute priority rule, to the Nash equilibrium, to von Neumann-Morganstern expected utility theory. It offers those interested in law a new way of thinking about legal rules, and it shows those interested in game theory a fertile and largely unexplored domain in which its tools have many applications.

159. Reinhard Selten - Autobiography
One of the founders of game theory and experimental economics and winner of the Nobel Prize in economics 1994 (together with Nash and Harsanyi)
http://www.nobel.se/economics/laureates/1994/selten-autobio.html
I was born in Breslau on October 10th, 1930. At that time, Breslau, now called Wroclaw, belonged to Germany and only German was spoken there. After the second world war Breslau became Polish and the original German population was almost completely replaced by a Polish one. I have never visited Wroclaw after the war. Heavy fighting destroyed most of the town in which I grew up and most of the familiar places of my youth look different now.
It was not easy for me to live as a half-Jewish boy under the Hitler regime. When I was 14 I had to leave high school and the opportunity to learn a trade was denied to me. The only career open to me was that of an unskilled worker. Fortunately it turned out that this did not matter much since after about half a year my mother, my brothers, my sister, and I left Breslau on one of the last trains before all outbound railway traffic stopped.
My situation as a member of an officially despised minority forced me to pay close attention to political matters very early in my life. Moreover I found myself in opposition to the political views shared by the vast majority of the population. I had to learn to trust my own judgment rather than
official propaganda or public opinion. This was a strong influence on my intellectual development. My continuing interest in politics and public affairs was one of the reasons why I began to be interested in economics in my last high school years.

An Introduction to the Theory of Honest Signalling Grazing on the savannah, a gazelle spots a feline form moving through the tall grass fifty meters away. It lifts its head, listening, sniffing the breeze, and then suddenly, released like a jack-in-the-box, it springs straight up into the air, six feet high. It lands, only to repeatedly leap in place again and again. Other members of the herd notice, and quickly begin to imitate its display. A magpie alights at the edge of her nest, a juicy caterpiller dangling from her beak. Even before her feet touch the haphazard assembly of twigs, her four nestlings launch into a cacophany of squawks, warbles, clucks, and clackings. As you are waiting for friend in the hotel lobby, a well-dressed man walks up and asks you for the time. You notice his thousand-dollar suit and, without thinking, address him as "Sir."
