I'm a graduate student in the Economics Department at Washington University . Beginning in the Spring semester of 2004 I will start my new job as an assistant professor at California State University - Long Beach. My dissertation is on the evolution of institutions which constrained early-modern French monarchs. In particular, I study the evolution of the Royal Revenue Farms (or Tax Farmers) from small competitively auctioned-off units into a single monopoly during the early-modern period. The Tax Farmers emerged during the eighteenth century as a powerful check on Royal authority and thus offer insights into why the Absolute Monarchy persisted for so long and why it ended when it did. This research resonates with many issues faced by development and public economists. It is an interesting case study in how bureaucracies develop and, more importantly, why bureaucracy may help solve credible commitment issues. Aside from economic history, my other research interests include public economics, economic development, and institutional economics. I've taught classes in international economics, money and banking, introductory macroeconomics, and introductory microeconomics.

The Electronic Journal of Evolutionary Modeling and economic Dynamics (eJEMED) is a noncommercial scientific journal which publishes also on evolutionary game theory.

Aims
The E lectronic J ournal of E volutionary M odeling and E conomic D ynamics ( e-JEMED is a noncommercial scientific journal. The main objective of e-JEMED is to foster the communication of ideas in the very active area of evolutionary modeling. As such, it does not compete with paper-based journals but complements them:
  • The publication process of e-JEMED is much quicker . An article can be published as soon as it is accepted. Each submitted article will be evaluated in ten weeks Each publication in e-JEMED can/should include a detailed version of all the appendixes that naturally complement an article based on simulations (at least the code and, more preferably, a working version of the program on the web). The authors of the articles published in e-JEMED conserve their and can submit the article to a paper-based journal.
At the same time, e-JEMED is engaged to keep high the scientific level of published articles through a double-blind refereeing process : articles can only be submitted anonymously (see the instructions to authors ) and the connection between the anonymous copy and the effective authors is managed by a database. Each article is read by two anonymous referees.

The text of the address given at the formal ceremony is reproduced below. His own lecture to the University on 'The State of Economics' was issued as a Wincott Paper in the Visitors' Series. ''It is a great privilege to welcome Professor Ronald Coase to Buckingham today. The Schools of Law and of Business comprise a rapidly developing part of the University of Buckingham and it seems entirely natural, therefore, that we should honour the work of Professor Coase. For the intellectual contributions which he has made, and for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economic Science in 1991, concern areas of mutual interest to students of business and the law. He has taught economics at universities in Britain and, after 1951, in the United States, but he is a rarity among economists in finding a congenial home in a Law School - at the University of Chicago - in 1964. There he became a distinguished editor of The Journal of Law and Economics which has become one of the highest ranked economics journals in the world.

129. Robert J. Aumann
Information about his life and influence on economic thought and game theory.
http://cepa.newschool.edu/het/profiles/aumann.htm
Robert J. Aumann, 1930-
Robert J. Aumann's has been one of the leading figures in the mathematical surge that has characterized Neo-Walrasian economics and game theory in the past forty years. Aumann entered into economics via cooperative game theory - In Neo-Walrasian theory, Robert Aumann is perhaps best known for his theory of core equivalence in a "continuum" economy. Aumann introduced measure theory into the analysis of economies with an infinite number of agents - formalizing the "perfectly competitive" scenario. In his classical 1964 paper, Aumann proved the equivalence of the Edgeworthian core and Walrasian equilibrium allocations when there are an uncountable infinite number of agents - thereby providing the limit case for future work on core convergence. In order to prove this result was not vacuous, Aumann went on to prove the existence of equilibrium (1966) in this "perfectly competitive" scenario. On his way, he contributed to mathematics itself by providing a definition of the "integral" of a correspondence (1965), which was previously absent. Previously, Aumann (1962) had swung Ockham's razoe and helped remove the axiom of completeness of preferences from the Walrasian theory of choice. In another classical paper with F.J. Anscombe in 1964, Aumann formalized the notion of "subjective probability", a concept that had been earlier forwarded by Leonard

Motivation
The infrastructure is vital to the United States economy, for example, the highway network supports an estimated economic activity of more than $400 billion annually, 20% of the gross national product. The United States infrastructure is almost complete. However, due to the extensive use, our national infrastructure; buildings, sewer, water, power plants, bridges, pavements, and water networks are simultaneously aging. Therefore, the emphasis has shifted toward their preservation through repair, rehabilitating and replacement activities. This requires a rapid collection and processing of a large amount of data to select and prioritize the preservation strategies. Thus, nondestructive testing methods is vital to the collection of condition assessment information. The assessed condition of infrastructure components provides the base from which other social, political, and economical issues would be used to manage our infrastructure.
Objectives
CIAM research activities concentrate on developing assessment tools by applying the knowledge of basic electromagnetic spectral wave theory to assess conditions, predict the remaining life of a structure, suggest the most cost-effective method and prioritize preservation strategies to manage infrastructure subsystems through a systems approach considering economic, social, and political issues.

139. Ronald H. Coase - Autobiography
Major contributor to Institutional Economics by his work on theory of property rights. Winner of Nobel Prize in economics 1991.
http://www.nobel.se/economics/laureates/1991/coase-autobio.html
My father, a methodical man, recorded in his diary that I was born at 3:25 p.m. on December 29th, 1910. The place was a house, containing two flats of which my parents occupied the lower, in a suburb of London, Willesden. My father was a telegraphist in the Post Office. My mother had been employed in the Post Office but ceased to work on being married. Both my parents had left school at the age of 12 but were completely literate. However, they had no interest in academic scholarship. Their interest was in sport. My mother played tennis until an advanced age. My father, who played football, cricket and tennis while young, played (lawn) bowls until his death. He was a good player, played for his county and won a number of competitions. He wrote articles on bowls for the local newspaper and for Bowls News
I had the usual boy's interest in sport but my main interest was always academic. I was an only child but although often alone, I was never lonely. When I learnt chess, I was happy to play the role of each player in turn. Lacking guidance, my reading (in books borrowed from the local public library) was undiscriminating and, as I now realize, I was unable to distinguish the charlatan from the serious scholar. My mother taught me to be honest and truthful and although it is impossible to escape some degree of self-deception, my endeavours to follow her precepts have, I believe, lent some strength to my writing. My mother's hero was Captain Oates, who, returning with Scott from the South Pole and finding that his illness was hampering the others, told his companions that he was going for a stroll, went out into a blizzard and was never heard of again. I have always felt that I should not be a bother to others but in this I have not always succeeded.
