103. Economic Growth
An introduction to new growth theory from The Fortune Encyclopedia of Economics.
http://www.stanford.edu/~promer/Econgro.htm
Economic Growth
by Paul M. Romer
From The Fortune Encyclopedia of Economics,
Compound Rates of Growth
In the modern version of an old legend, an investment banker asks to be paid by placing one penny on the first square of a chess board, two pennies on the second square, four on the third, etc. If the banker had asked that only the white squares be used, the initial penny would double in value thirty-one times, leaving $21.5 million on the last square. Using both the black and the white squares makes the penny grow to $92,000,000 billion. People are reasonably good at forming estimates based on addition, but for operations such as compounding that depend on repeated multiplication, we systematically underestimate how fast things grow. As a result we often lose sight of how important the average rate of growth is for an economy. For an investment banker the choice between a payment that doubles with every square on the chess board and one that doubles with every other square is more important than any other part of the contract. Who cares whether the payment is in pennies, pounds, or pesos? For a nation the choices that determine whether income doubles with every generation, or instead with every other generation, dwarf all other policy concerns.
Growth in Income Per Capita Starting at one-third the level in the United States, income per capita in Japan grew at the rate of 5.8 percent per year from 1960 to 1985. Starting at one-fifteenth of the level in the United States, income per capita in India grew at the rate of 1.5 percent per year. Because income per person grew at an annual rate of 2.1 percent in the United States, Japan was catching up and India was falling farther behind.

108. Douglas Low's "The Relevancy Of Merleau-Ponty’s Political Theory"
An essay by Douglas Low which briefly summarizes aspects of the philosopher's political theory and applies them to current economic, political, and social conditions.

The Relevancy of Merleau-Ponty’s Political Theory by Douglas Low Douglas Low. All rights reserved.
Introduction
Merleau-Ponty’s political ideas, formed approximately fifty years ago, are still remarkably relevant today. In this paper I will provide a brief summary of his two mid-century political treatises, set his “new liberalism” and “non-communist left” against traditional liberalism and the left of the communist orthodoxy, and attempt to apply his position to turn of the century conditions and events. I will conclude with a brief consideration of how Merleau-Ponty’s left liberalism is community based.
Merleau-Ponty’s Political Theory
In Humanism and Terror [i] Merleau-Ponty’s first political treatise, written shortly after WWII, he states that the liberal values of Western democracies are associated with individual conscience, truth based on knowledge, the order of law, and with an appeal to universality and equality, that is, to legal and moral principles applied consistently to all. Merleau-Ponty supports these values, as he believes Marx does, but finds, as does Marx, that they are often not practiced as they are preached by Western societies. In fact, these societies often display a dramatic gap between theory and practice, for their appeal to law frequently justifies exploitation and suppression by force both at home and abroad. Moreover, liberalism often justifies its use of force by appeal to rational argument, but

What is this page about?
That Web site presents the history theory (you could name the History Mechanics) developed by author in 1990-2002. It is the general schema that explains the strongest historical, and economical processes. You will not find here many facts from history. That page is devoted to present my work, so if you search for important information, you better click out.
But:
  • If you are interested in mechanisms that rules the history, and want to see some answers, why our history was as it was. If you are interested in scientific explanation of history If you want to learn tools that helps to predict events like South-Asia Crisis (1997) or fall of president Fujimori in Peru (2000).
This page will probably satisfy you.

114. Experience From A Course In Game Theory
The second edition of an interactive paper originally published in Games and economic Behavior, focused on webbased teaching. Contains links to more than 40 experiments and their results. Provided by Ariel Rubinstein at Princeton University.
http://www.princeton.edu/~ariel/99/gt100.html
Second Edition: Oct 1999 Academic Press Ariel Rubinstein Abstract This is a revised version of my paper with the same title published in Games and Economic Behavior , 28 (1999), 155-170. The paper summarizes my experience in teaching an undergraduate course in game theory in 1998 and in 1999. Students were required to submit two types of problem sets:pre-class problem sets, which served as experiments, and post-class problem sets, which require the students to study and apply the solution concepts taught in the course. The sharp distinction between the two types of problem sets emphasizes the limited relevance of game theory as a tool for making predictions and giving advice. The paper summarizes the results of 43 experiments which were conducted during the course. It is argued that the crude experimental methods produced results which are not substantially different from those obtained at much higher cost using stricter experimental methods.
My sincere thanks to my two excellent research assistants, Yoram Hamo, during the 1998 course, and Michael Ornstein, during the 1999 course and in the writing of the paper and its revised version.
