141. Langseth MicroStrategy Telecommuting
Develops pathways to economic development using SQL Server database technology over the internet, using plain English and Photoshop tools.
http://www.langseth.com/
The Langseth Design Team Focused on WEB Development To Contents Abstract
Abstract
As data architects, we do data analysis and denormalized data warehouse design using some of the latest tools. Our favorites include MicroStrategy, ER/Studio and Microsoft's Visual Studio.net. We write stored procedures and triggers for SQL Server databases using Transact SQL. Our goal is to build this site into a focal point to support economic development over the Web, broadcasting data (and work) to remote devices, including personal computers and PDAs. Another area of focus is health care data analysis and planning. We have experience with HIPAA and 21 CFR 11 planning, programming and documentation. We have a mission to support economic development through telecommuting with on-line database support. Initiatives include working with Indian people (Native Americans) and other remote peoples living in isolated regions to link these peoples to jobs on the Web. We link database technologies with the Web to transport data entry and analysis tasks to those who need to telecommute. We believe that the remote processing of graphics is an ideal telecommuting task. When Justin Langseth established EIS as a leading worldwide bulletin-board product in the early 1980s, it was accepted by the publishing industry as a vehicle to transport print-ready files from place to place. Now, we envision remote peoples formatting and enhancing photos and other graphics via the Web.

Background on Argentina's economic and social crisis For most of the 20th century, Argentina was considered one of the most developed countries in South America, however poor economic decisions, political instability, and endemic corruption have contributed to Argentina's decline from the 10th richest country in the world in 1913 to the 36th in 1998. Argentina now finds itself bankrupt with an external debt of US153 billion. This constitutes one seventh of all the debt of developing countries. Before Christmas, the four-year recession culminated in a debt crisis, which left Argentina struggling to meet its repayment deadlines. International confidence in the Argentine economy was at an all time low and capital flight from Argentina in 2001 was estimated to be in the region of US20 billion. At the beginning of December the IMF refused to unfreeze the latest instalment of an agreed US$40 billion rescue package, due to Argentina's failure to meet its deficit targets.

VI Readings on Poverty, Hunger, and Economic Development
Approximately one-fifth of the world's population, over one billion people, earns less than $1.00 a day. According to the 1998 UN World Development Report , the three richest people in the world own assets that exceed the combined Gross Domestic Products of the world's 48 poorest countries, and Forbes Magazine reports that 358 billionaires had a combined net worth equal to the combined income of the bottom 45 percent of the world's population. Each day, over a billion people in the world lack basic food needs. And each day 35,000 children under the age of five die of starvation or preventable infectious disease. Furthermore the problems of growing inequality, poverty, and hunger are getting worse in spite of the huge surge of global economic growth over the past 50 years. In this section will will address the issues of the amount of food in the world, the role it plays in a capitalist economy, why people are poor, and what measures can be taken to eliminate poverty and hunger. What is Geography?
Geography, at the start of the new century, is a comparatively small but lively and challenging academic discipline providing a distinctive approach to many of today's societal problems and issues: economic and social inequality; cost and quality of health care delivery systems, urban and suburban growth; efficient transport systems, patterns of food supply and hunger, health and disease, education and child labor; environmental and pollution problems; economic impacts of natural catastrophies (floods, earthquakes), appropriate utilization of water and energy resources; local and locational repercussions of new communications technologies; the activities and behaviors of transnational corporations; and many more.
The Geography Department has over the years developed a strong emphasis on Economic and Business Geography. [See also:

Amid economic turmoil, inklings of optimism
From Brooks Jackson CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) Hundreds of thousands have lost work in recent months, many since the September 11 terror attacks. But while the economy now looks bleak, there are signs already that suggest it will come roaring back, according to economists. Boeing, the airplane manufacturing giant, expects to cut as many as 30,000 employees. But the layoffs extend far beyond airlines. Hotels and restaurants, for example, have been hard hit. And the economic shock has affected many other industries as well. "I don't know what the unemployment office looked like a month ago or two months ago, but I'm sure it wasn't quite this crowded," said Bob Bannon, a laid-off telecom worker. CNN.COM SPECIAL REPORT
